Any ideas how to stop it randomly (and frequently) disconnecting? Brand new phone (Samsung S22) with Android 13 and a brand new Kia Sportage. Think it's the phone rather than the car as the old phone didn't do it. Tried loads of different cables including a number of good quality ones as well as Samsung ones so don't think it's that.

Just randomly disconnects, car displays a message saying your phone has stopped responding. Unplugging the SUB cable and plugging it back in reconnect Android Auto. Frequency of disconnects is getting worse. It's driving me nuts as I like Android Auto as a sat nav but it's become unusable.

Any ideas?

i had loads of trouble with a Google Pixel and an aftermarket AA head unit. Put up with it until I needed to replace the phone.

Is the Bluetooth being taken by another device such as a headset?

Same problem here with a Google pixel 6 and 2017 ford Kuga.

No idea what the fix is,some forums suggest using a usb c to a adapter.

I had the same issue with my VW Golf and a brand new iPhone. Tried all sorts of leads, nothing worked. After looking on VW forums I bought a VW branded cable (it wasn’t cheap, like £15 not cheap) and it’s not dropped out since. Does Kia sell cables?

See if you can connect wirelessly to it, this should be available on all new cars. This might be a temporary fix.

Try a different car? 😁

Honestly, we bought a new motor last summer and the head unit is beyond shite, it's at the point now where my partner is going "when can we sell it?"  It goes back to Seat and then it's stable for a couple of months, then it goes mental again.

Got a SEAT Leon here and rarely had any issues.  When I do I just reset it and works fine again. But there's just been a significant upgrade on Android Auto that seems to be a little flaky.

They’re all awful pretty much without exception and seem to be designed by people who don’t actually drive. Even the famed BMW iDrive is utter garbage. Just about the only exception is the Mercedes COMAND unit or oddly enough the Volvo Sensus, but even then… What makes it worse is no one at any dealership anywhere in the UK knows how to work them either so the answer is always factory reset them and try again…

Actually….. have you tried that???

I've applied all the advice from bruneeps link above, there were a few things I hadn't done. Will need to test it out. Yes Kia do cables, might have to resort to that if nothing else works. Despite being a new car and model, launched in 2022 it doesn't support wireless connection as afar as I can tell.

Yes did try another phone, used my old phone with it before, only dropped out a couple of times over several weeks and i think that was down to a damaged cable.

Looks like im not alone, will report back after my next trip out. WFH for the next 2 days.

Yeah when i had the Vito only 1/4 cables worked well... (some not at all). It appears not all cables that charge, do the data/comms

The weird thing with my android auto problem is that the wifes phone (samsung galaxy s20) works fine with the car, but  my phone doesnt. We're both using the same cable - surely it cant be a cable problem if it works fine with the wifes phone?

I had similar issues here with my Pixel phone. Long story short a combination of better quality cable, and taking a (wooden) toothpick to the phone's USB-C port to clear out crumbs have helped, but not completely solved the issue

I wasn't aware that Android Auto worked wirelessly at all.  Must be a fairly new thing if it does.

I'd say "unlikely but possible."  Adherence to USB standards is a hot mess.

It depends if the car supports it. A lot, don't. Or they support wireless Apple carplay, but not Android Auto.

Have you got the latest software on the head unit?

You can update the Kia software yourself online, it updates the maps for the navigation at the same time.

I realise this sounds like one of those generic "Run chkdisk + sfc /scannow" type answers that people post when they don't know what they're talking about, but i have genuinely fixed this recently by clearing the data + cache on the Android Auto app.  You will have to redo the connection when you first plug it in of course.

(Somewhat) interestingly, the first thing it did on mine was bitch that it didn't have the location and notification permissions allowed, I checked and indeed it did not. I've never touched those settings so it's been lost in an update or something.

When I got my new Pixel it kept disconnecting from the car and the Bluetooth speakers etc. It was really irritating.

It turned out to be a battery issue. You can set what level of battery access individual apps have. Things that need a constant connection can be set to 'unrestriced' rather than 'eco' or similar.

Now I've got a solid permanent connection on everything I need.

I came to say what sharkattack said.

Samsung have aggressive battery use policies on their phones. You need to find the Android Auto app in Settings -> Applications (or Apps), then dig down though the list until you see the battery settings and change it to unrestricted.

If that doesn’t help sit in the car and wiggle the cable around to see if you can reproduce the problem.

Yep, set the battery usage to unrestricted now, that was one of the suggestions in Bruneeps link and a good one I hope.

Have you got the latest software on the head unit?

I don't think so, I think there was a software update released on the 7th of December which also solved a lot of issue with DAB reception apparently. I'll have to check what version is on there. It's possible the dealer updated it but I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't.

I've cleared the Android Auto cache again, did it the other day and the phone stayed connected for the rest of the journey but has been worse than ever since.

I've given the cable a good wiggle, and tried lots of different ones. I think it's the phone / settings.

Thanks for all the replies, been helpful, just need to go out in the car now and see if it's improved.

Are you on the new 'coolwalk' update of android auto? It'll have the map/Spotify etc side by side with the new layout.

I've had AA working brilliantly for the last couple of years, went into work today and had the update, my phone disconnected once on the way in and again on the way home, both journeys no more than 40 minutes. So there may be something with the update.

From my experience its the cable, some phones are also fusier that others. My S20 is much less tolerant of cable that my One Plus was. Switched to Anker cables and solved the issue straight away. But the cable do degrade so you'll need to replace periodically.

My phone has recently started showing notifications that android auto won't work without an update

Slightly annoying as my phone won't update whilst roaming. Going into town tomorrow just to update my phone over some unsuspecting cafe's WiFi.

Well the road test was weird last night. I played up quite a bit, swapped cable (to an Anker cable) then decided to connect my daughters phone instead. That crashed in 30 seconds, does that in our other car as well. Plugged mine back in and it didn't miss a beat for the next hour and a half. No idea what made it suddenly behave.

Stumpjon have you seen this for setting up AA wirelessly in your Kia.

It wasn’t turned on in my new Jazz hybrid, only CarPlay. A forum member posted how to get into hidden sub menus and there you could turn on wireless AA. So it’s weird that Honda doesn’t do it anyway.

janwal, I'll have a look at that later, would be great if it would connect wirelessly, surprised it doesn't seem to be an option for a new model vehicle.

Latest update is my wife's phone also disconnected today and it's completely stable in her car. Might have to nick her cable as that's the last variable. Pointing more towards the head unit than the phones maybe.

Today though I discovered if you leave it plugged in it seems to reconnect after 30 seconds or so. Up until now I'd been pulling the plug out to force a reconnect. Did that with both phones.

Think I may investigate a head unit software update as well.
