possibly stupidly I have just bought an iPhone XR to replace my old Sony XZ3 compact.
ok, so no biggy I thought until I came across the screw-up that is the incompatibility of the backups that the android and iphone versions of android use - one is on the icloud and one is on google drive and each version won't restore messages from the other.
Googling is coming across various dodgy looking apps that claim to do it but user comments suggest not.
Anyone had any success doing this ?
I could resort to the email 'solution' but that seems uber-hacky.
I move WhatsApp from iPhone to Android and all the history came with it, using the snatdard WhatsApp method.
cheers, older versions of iphone might have used google drive for backup and then it would all be easy, but new versions use icloud only it seems 🙁
I had similar going the other way, it seems that even tho it's the same account. In the end I just started a fresh, it was annoying at the time.
ok, so I've done it.
I had to buy an app from https://www.backuptrans.com/, namely this one :
https://www.backuptrans.com/android-whatsapp-to-iphone-transfer.html
for the sum of £21.59.
It took me loads of googling to track it down - there's a few programs that say they can do it but on further inspection they look well dodgy or don't work. I found a user site with lots of people using this app to do the transfer.
There is a tips page, linked below, but basically you connect both your android phone and your iphone to your Windows laptop (I think they do another app version if you have a Mac), and then on your android phone you :
- enable USB debugging
- disable google cloud backup
- backup to your local phone storage
- uninstall WhatsApp
- install their modified version of WhatsApp which gives them a backdoor to getting to the messages in your backup
and on your iphone
- disable icloud backup
- disable find your phone (don't know why)
- install whatsapp and don't let it restore from icloud
and on your Windows machine
- install itunes
- run the backuptrans software
It then finds your phones and pulls all the whatsapp messages from the android phone. you then click on the android phone and select transfer to iphone.
it then seems to leave your iphone in a reinstall screen, and when you log on and into Whatsapp again you have to reregister but not restore from icloud, and there are your messages. Then turn back on icloud backup and backup to icloud.
Here's the tips page but there are extra steps in their which popup dialogs point you to (don't take my list asa a guide).

Isn't WhatsApp just for talking nonsense with your mates and sending pointless photographs?
Why would you want a backup of such banal rubbish?

You're aware that they now most likely have access to your security keys in whatsapp making it not very secure and they are possibly slurping your data?
I'd advise you ditch the dodgy versions and reinstall a proper copy ASAP.
@turnerguy has anything bad come from using this method? I have an iPhone 6S I'm about to move across to...
Can’t you use the desktop app to back up messages?

Not sure what desktop app you mean? But I really want them on my new phone.
I've got plenty of messages I refer back to.
Have you got a laptop or a PC? There’s a whatsapp app available for windows which works when your phone is nearby. I use it when I’m working. I just wondered if you could use that to back up your chats.
Ah I see, yeah I do use that but no way to transfer the messages across that I know of.
All sorted. Bit of a faff but apparently 80,000 messages moved across!! 😮
I'm sure I've done this many times (Android->iPhone) just using a Google Drive backup? No need for anything else. <edit> Just googled - perhaps it was with older versions of WhatsApp and iOS.
@jamze apparently iPhone also used to use Google Drive for backups, but now uses iCloud. So this doesn't work anymore. Which is rubbish 🙁

yes, the dodgy copy is just sop they can get at the messages in your initial backup, the whatsapp installed on your iphone is a kosher version.

sorry for the late reply, nothing seems to have come up - everythign seems to be working OK.
You need to watch your iphone wanting to backup photos from whatsapp into your normal iphone photos backup or you will backup every photo that anyone sends in a whatsapp group.
I've switched to using google photos to back everything up as google drive storage is a bit cheaper and easier to manage for other backups.
Cheers I went ahead and did it and all working well. Well the photos are there from way back in WhatsApp. Sorted the photos not appearing in the normal photos app too cheers.
I use Google photos too because that's what I've always been using anyway so made sense to carry on.
