Maybe it's a completely daft question but is there an accepted preference / argument for choosing a boy over a girl puppy (or vice versa)? As per other thread we're thinking more seriously about a dog and it's not something I've given a great deal of thought to, my two girls would prefer another lady I think whilst I'd like some more male company in the house.

Just wasn't sure if there were more solid arguments either way than my desire to have some solace in a house full of girls...

Very difficult and IME it would probably come down to whether you want to breed from it. Dogs are generally cheaper than bitches for this reason if you are going for a pedigree. I and can honestly say that I don't have a preference.

I have two black labs at the moment (brother and sister) and although they have different personalities there really isn't much between them as far as temperament, training etc although the bitch is marginally more clingy/protective and seems slightly easier to train. Only other thing is that the bitch is on meds since being spayed due to leakage, not uncommon apparently.

If you are going for a puppy, probably best to look up breed traits and owners clubs for more feedback and advice, either way dogs are great.

Certainly don't think we'd be breeding. We may allow the chickens to sit on some eggs in the spring but I think chicks are as far as I want to go on the whole raising animals front!

TBH I suspect I'll be over-ruled and we'll end up with a girl.

Once you've neutered a male or spayed a female, you've more or less got the same thing anyway.

I think bitches are more loyal, but then I've never had a dog myself!!

Spaying is more expensive than neutering.

Males tend to be larger.

From the 4 dogs I've had I would say males are cleaner.

Bitches bleed all over your house when in season.

Female dogs have a tendency to do this too. 😉
