It's armed forces day today, whatever that means to you, but we have plenty of men and women out around the world at the messier end of decision making on our behalf. A lot of them are not well paid, and that's unlikely to change hugely any time soon. I was struck when visiting USA how lots of corporations are upfront with discounts and offers for serving military and veterans, and have been wondering if UK had some catching up to do. Obviously it's up to companies to decide, but a quick and easy start with making days out and family trips easier to afford. Again, it's up to theme parks etc to decide what they want to do, but it strikes me that the government is sitting on the keys to a huge number of attractions through English Heritage, Historic Scotland, CADW, NIEA etc. So how about free annual family membership for every current serviceman and woman? Is it worth a Downing Street petition? Doesn't cost the government much to implement and the tea shops make a bit extra at the castles from the families who wouldn't have come because of the entry fee.

Suppose the govt might like as it is cheap and makes them look good.

Better wages would be a better solution than handouts imo. If wages is a problem.

There's a site called Tickets for troops.org.uk that does some excellent deals for serving HM forces personnel. Were not quite up there with the Yanks, but it's a good start.

An idea for Armed Forces Day?......spend the money on wages and equipment for the armed forces and care for wounded soldiers/grieving families rather than however much was spent on Armed Forces Day

Just my honest opinion
