What is the point?

Incorrect.

Why is the point.

What is the object.

Pain and suffering exist. Work to help reduce pain and suffering.

What's the point?

Have a good time, and try and help others have a good time whilst you're here. That's about it.

There is no point.

It is an illusion.

Judging by the answers there's very little point to an existential thread on here.

There is no point. Your consciousness isn't real, it's just a chemical reaction.

Or live love laugh

No, see, that's a loaded suggestion IMO. Exhorting people to live simply carries an implicit value judgement does it not?

There isn't one. As far as I know, life was created by chance after an incomprehensibly long time with none. In another incomprehensibly long time, the universe will crumble back in on itself, and life as we know it will be gone. Once it's gone, with no trace remaining, I'd find it hard to argue there was any reason for it to have existed in the first place.

On a more positive note, we seem to have evolved to experience happiness as some sort of motivation to stay alive. I'm interpreting that as being the point of it all - be as happy as you can, without being too much of a dick to anyone else. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff, but it'll do me.

When you sleep does your consciousness completely switch off? And if so when you wake up does your consciousness pick up from where it left off, or does an entirely new consciousness form that just has the memories of all the previous consciousnesses that came before it? And if that's the case is there any discernable difference between your consciousness switching off as you fall asleep and your consciousness switching off as you die?
