I just got one for a laugh. I am told a guy has video'd himself learning - took 2h 38m

The bloke that talked me into it has a geared 24" fat one which he took touring in Nepal.

I have not be juggling any time soon, promise!

Fun fact, Jeff Bezos' real dad was a frustrated circus unicyclist. Turns out it's not a very viable career for most people.

I got one about 10 years ago, aged 40. Took me a while to learn (and I never got much good) but I've never been one for wheelies and track-stands etc.

I have one and got decent at riding it.  Never mastered a proper getting on it tho - always needed something to lean on?  I learnt in a corridor so I has something to lean on

I eventually broke it by setting up jumps, opening all the doors so I got a long run up and jumped it to land with a dull thud and a broken unicycle.  Yes - the famous words " hold my beer" were said!

No but it's sort of on the todo list. Here is a random unicyclist video:

In a former life yes along with bit of fire eating, thought about trying to set some records on it until I found out someone had unicycled across Canada, I certainly wasn't that dedicated, think I sold it over 30yrs ago now 😕

It's an interesting skill to learn. A very steep learning curve, feels impossible to start with but you quickly get a feel for it. A bit like riding a bike, it's not just about learning to ride, once you can ride you can take it much further. I used to compete nationally and internationally. Actually came second at the world championship in the mountain unicycling back in the 90s. A bit of a hollow brag as it was a sport in its infancy and the best riders at the time were organising the event so didn't compete. Now there are some amazingly talented riders in a number of different disciplines. Some amazing skills on YouTube. It's also a good sport for N+1. Beginner unicycles are bit crap (think bso) but you'll need a selection of wheel and tyre sizes if you get serious 🙂

Mate of mine is an off-road unicyclist. He rides the sort of stuff that we (allegedly) do, only on one fewer wheel. My first question was "don't you fall off?" and the answer it transpires is yes, a lot.

My first question was “don’t you fall off?” and the answer it transpires is yes, a lot.

There are two levels: an actual fall, hitting the ground, much like from a bike, and an unplanned dismount (upd) which involves coming off and landing on your feet. This is more akin to a dab on a bike and is much more common. Over all it's a better thing to fall off than a bike but you do it more often.

Saw a couple of blokes do Polaris Challenges years back on unicycles.
Bottle in one hand, map in the other.
Mad, very skilled though.

I used to regularly see a guy on a unicycle going over dean’s bridge and along queensferry road edinburgh. I’d estimate he was doing 15mph, which I think is pretty fast.
I’ve tried one, couldn’t go it at all.

Amazing how badly some stuff in NWD has aged but this still looks like something that someone would do today.

I can ride one.

I was "okay" at it years ago, haven't kept in practise though.

Could free mount one, ride backwards, idle, ride one-footed, do a few trick mounts. Could free mount a giraffe unicycle too. Did a bit of off-road unicycling.

Never got the hang of juggling on one, though.

Ed Pratt us pretty good on one, he should be able to teach you.

If you like this, watch his series cycling round the world on one. Great series

I learnt and somewhere I have a video of me riding and a chugging a beer!...and that is as far as I got found freemounting hard to nail and lost enthusiasm...down under and I would say there seems to be a pretty active MUNI scene...not that unusual to see when out on the trails...here's some in carport action from a few years ago:

Yep, I can. Although I lent mine to my cousin a few years back so he could do some Pizza deliveries on it and never had it back.

I've had the opportunity a couple of times since, and can't free mount any more, but can still ride them to some level.

I have one. Its in the cellar where it belongs. I have watched numerous videos, and wasted countless hours of my life desperately trying to learn. My best performance? I would estimate keeping my feet on the pedals for maybe 2 seconds. They are the devils work. I also cannot wheelie or juggle!!

Anyone reading the thread title as "Army unicycles here?"

There was a guy at work who played unicycle hockey, used to train on the old indoor court we had on site. Incredibly fast and skilled.

Wish I'd seen this last night. I recently picked up a unicycle when I saw a chap clearing out a house and he said I could help myself. It's sat in the garage for a month before I admitted to myself I'd probably never get round to learning so I offered it on the thrift group. It's being collected tonight

Twice in the last few weeks I've seen a guy on a unicycle on the trails of SW Sheffield. First time he was heading over Totley Moor; last week he was on his way down Devil's Elbow on Blacka Moor, which is a whole other level of challenge! Anybody else spotted him?

I've got three, hence my forum name. I can free mount, and my longest ride without a upd is about 15 miles. I don't ride then much these days, but in first lockdown I thought I'd learn to idle. I couldn't get it at all, it was like my early days learning to ride. Might try again now I'm retired.

Inspired to get mine out the loft by this thread.

Never quite got the hang of riding it previously. Not traveling over the holidays so might be a good skill to practice.

this popped up in my news feed today...guy and his son unicycling across Tasmania...

contains charity work, mental health issues, father and son and unicycling that's a few boxes ticked:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-01/father-son-unicycling-tasmania/100716100

the article refers to cycling around Taiwan with displaced kids...there is a 10minute resume of that here:

also on the father/son website is a link to a 1hr (ish) film on municycling worth a watch if interested (somewhere on this page I think) Revolution 1 by Dan Heaton

Two unicyclists did the first 'Puffer 24 hour.

Played unicycle hockey for a number of years back er ~20-25 or so! Tennis court, ice hockey sticks and goals, normal hockey ball, absolute carnage!

Also used to do "light" offroading with them, tricky as no brake unlike modern muni's

Did half of a charity cycle marathon on them once. They tried to deny us the completion medals but we successfully argued half the wheels so half the distance!!

My son is really good on one offroad. Does loads of local stuff and trail-centre stuff.

He's currently trying to learn to ride one-footed and do more trailsy/tricks stuff.
We learned the basics together and then he started riding it the 5km to school and I never got time to catch up so now I don't bother.
