Taking the gf to Amsterdam for her birthday mid December, neither of us has ever been before
Have no idea where's good to stay or even which area of the city, but I'm thinking near the van gough museum area
We're going for the museums and the pretty bits, not the drug dens and brothels 😆

You’re missing the best bits!

I tend to use the Park Hotel. On the edge of the Vondelpark (lovely!), walking distance to the Rijksmuseum (brilliant) and good bike parking outside. All of the good bits of town are easily accessible by bike.

You will be hiring bikes for the duration of your stay, right?

I don’t know the city that well, but I usually stayed at Banks Mansion when I was there for work.

Unlimited booze was nice 🙂

Recently stayed at the Hotel the Bird via booking.com for a long weekend there, nice, central too for everything it has to offer. Had a great time doing all the usual touristy things. Only weird thing was seeing 2 dead bodies being carted off, one dragged out of a canal and one where someone had fallen out of high up window...

We stayed just outside in the Mecure City a couple of years ago. Having stayed more centrally before I was quite impressed. And it was easier than expected to get back into the centre if perhaps a little corporate but there are still some great restaurants etc about.

My only tip would be to avoid the RLD Friday to Sunday. It gets full idiots (unfortunately most of which are brits) thinking they're the first person ever to smoke weed and drink beer*. Any other time and the rest of the city is beautiful.

*Although it's actually quite funny to watch the wasted, barking their orders at barstaff (in English because they can't be arsed to learn a handful of words) and get charged double. The dutch don't care for them too much. 😆
