We listen to an iPad in the shop which plays through a cheap dab cd music centre thing and some speakers.
Apple music sounds passable but internet radio and BBC listen again have a rattly treble sound that really annoys me.
Bought our Bose mini in and listening through my phone. The tinny treble has gone. I know a Sonos 1 sounds better than a mini.
Any other things I should think of spending my £150 on?
I did put run the speakers through a Nad 3020e amp that I had and it was still tinny.
Don't really have room in the shop for a full size amp.
We don't have the music loud I just want it clear and not tinny.
I use one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nobsound-NS-10G-Bluetooth-Digital-Amplifier-black/dp/B071Z81L6H/ and some old Wharfedale Diamond speakers in the garage and it sounds pretty good.
These would be the latest incarnation - https://www.richersounds.com/hi-fi/standmount-speakers/wharfedale-9-0-black.html
Sorted for less than £80
We have an audio pro portable speaker. Brilliant piece of kit.
Not exactly what you are looking for but consider the IKEA eneby Bluetooth speaker. I bought one of the back of some great YouTube reviews and haven't been disappointed, probably going to buy the larger model too. Looks good sounds good and is tuneable for bass and treble should the out of box not appeal.
Got my daughter an ultimate ears boom 2 and have been amazed at the sound quality and useability. It's practically replaced 5 grands worth of hifi for everyday use!
^^ what oldtennisshoes said! 🙂
I've got one of the Nobsound amps at work and they are perfect for what you want.
That Ikea speaker looks fantastic for the money btw
Our speakers are eltax millennium minis.
They seem well reviewed.
Which bit is most likely to mend the rattly treble ,amp or speakers?
It may be that the radio is playing at too low quality if other music sounds ok.
Try TuneIn radio on the iPad and choose a higher quality stream, see if it sounds any better.
You'll still get better sound out of something bigger than the Bose Mini obviously, but the tinny overcompressed noise might still be there is the quality of the steam isn't good enough.
The worst culprit is listen again on the BBC. I download the show using best of the best quality. What numbers that equates to I don't know.
Radio Caroline streamed at 128 sounds better.
ZK - where are you based?
Epsom / Cheam Surrey
I've got one of these, it doesn't sount tinny !!!
Theres nothing wrong with that NAD amplifier so if it's sounding tinny it's almost certainly down to the speakers.
If you're short of space you can buy active speakers (ie, amp is built into them).
UE Boom sound great for the size but it's going to be playing from one point so if you want sound around a shop you might want speakers mounted up on the walls so that you've not got an area next to the speaker that's too loud - depends what you're trying to achieve.
To risk the fury of the purists(!) - have you tried some sort of graphic equalizer app on your iPad?
I use Boom2 on my desktop and laptop Macs and you can certainly add some extra ooomph to the base.
Loads of nice powered speakers about. Look at Edifices 128o for example. £100 ish depending on connectivity
Just bought a st of these Edifier 1280DB to add a turntable and phono preamp (both Pro-Ject) too, when I discovered my amp wouldn't fit in the allocated sideboard. Line in and bluetooth .. I'm perfectly happy with the sound, and they were recommended by a hifi site as a decent cheap way to amplify a turntable. CPC are the chepaest I found, Amazon selling the BT equipped ones for around £130.
Do the edifiers need to be plugged in to power? If so does each speaker need its own plug?
The sound doesn't need to fill the whole shop. I need it loud enough for me to hear the music but hequiet enough to hear customers. The current speakers live on the floor .
Normally active speakers have the amp in one speaker (with a mains cable) and a standard speaker cable to the second speaker.
Zippy - Sonos are doing a refurbished Play:1 for £119 with free delivery and 100 days to return it if you don't like it.
It should/would sound good, look good and would allow you to stream music without messing with bluetooth (i.e. won't kill your battery, no need to stay in range, etc.). It can also be set to start/stop playing automatically as well using alarms).
My friend has got a Sonos so will go and listen to the iPlayer on it.
I think I'm trying to polish an internet radio turd to be honest.
We have a Tangent Ampster BT, and it is both tiny and excellent. Was £129, but now gone up. Drives a set of Wharfdales in Son1's student room.
I'd get this if it's still available
ZK - you can do this for less than £100.
I've just knocked this up after reading your thread and it sounds ace!
Ingredients:
Lepy LP2020A class D amp - £25ish of the bay.
Speakers - JBL Control - £49 from Richer Sounds
A 3.5mm jack to twin RCA lead - about £4 off the bay
Some speaker cable.
The problem with Bluetooth is the fact that you're effectively tethered to a set radius around the kit and you have to feed it a source.
Fine in a boat, car or a smallish zone but it's not ideal.
In true STW fashion, can I be the first to ask whether you have a PPL PRS MusicLicence 😬
Edifier or Q Acoustics active bookshelf speakers. No amp needed.
Hamishcat.
Yes we do.
It was always paid grudgingly (as numerous threads will attest) but when they stepped up to help save 6 music my attitude changed.
i have these https://www.richersounds.com/cambridge-yoyo-medium-dark-grey.html -proper stereo, excellent sound, can go very loud...
lovely
Is anyone in a position to download Richard Shearling on the BBC iPlayer and compare the quality to an apple music download on any of the above systems?
I have this set up in my garage
Cambridge Audio Topaz AM5 amp £75 off eBay
Warfedale Diamond 9.0 speakers £50 from Richer sounds
Speaker cable from Richer Sounds £5
Amazon Echo input £20 from Amazon UK
The Amazon Echo input connects to the amp via a phono to 3.5mm input lead and allows you to play any radio station or listen to Spotify through the system, no need to keep getting your phone out or connecting it to a speaker, just tell the Echo input what you want to listen to (wifi connection needed for the Echo input)
Takes up little room and sounds great for the price
