I'm travelling to the USA in a couple of weeks for a month, and want to get a GiffGaff-style SIM so I can call locally and internationally relatively cheaply. Is there a GiffGaff equivalent? If not, what's the best option for PaYG and international calls over there?

I use 4G T-Mobile sim. It was cheap pretty cheap and the data connection is fast enough to use Skype for international calls. If you top up with more then 100USD the credit stays on for a year, otherwise you loose it after either a month (or 3?). I dunno about a GiffGaff equivalent though. I've found data connection much more important than calls when out there, but YMMV.

IMVHO the best way to do it is to buy a sim on eBay in advance . buying just a sim once you get there is a pain. I used tmobile. $40 unlimited for a month, buy vouchers at big chain drug stores etc to ensure there is no possible way bastards can overcharge your credit card

If you get a local sim here you will be charged to receive calls and texts. If you pick up an international call you get charged the same as if you dialed it so I was pretty disappointed when I got a $5 per min charge formy first call.
You can check out the main players AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile online.

might be what you want but I can't see internatioanl calling costs and it looks like the UK is not one of the 100 countries to get free texts...

Buy a 3 PAYG SIM if it's mostly international (ie back to and from the UK) and data, all of which are free.

You'd only then need to pay 15ppm for US calls.
