Seeing as there are a few coffee specialists on this forum are there any custard snobs? As I scoff a tin of custard after 2 hrs bike run is there a better snack out a tin and is proper homemade stuff worth making? Birds powder not to be used

I drove past the factory yesterday. Doesn’t look like it does on the tins...

So sweet but so good.

There are better quality bought ones the posh fresh own brand ones from supermarkets are good.

I love custard (N Americans just don't do it - heathens), but Ambrosia stuff is *really* sweet. Probably why you like it after a bike ride, tbh.

Personally I prefer the Birds powder stuff you make, but you can't go wrong with either! Especially over a proper fruit crumble or strudel...

ambrosia pre-made stuff is rank (ditto for rice pudding stuff that looks like sick but with the carrots removed)

birds powder stuff is way better

although neither are actually really custard

proper vanillesaus for strudel is runnier

Yes, not difficult either.

For what it's worth, I actually like Ambrosia custard, but it's not really custard.

My post-ride fix of choice is an iced coffee.  A big carb replenishment and a real thirst-quencher.

A triple espresso shot with loads of sugar stirred in then poured over ice.  Shave flakes of Kelly's Clotted Cream Ice Cream,  fill with double cream and maybe top up with milk if you're starting to feel queezy, stir and sip through a straw.

Mrs BigJohn enhances hers with a big shot of Tia Maria but that's just silly at 11:00 am.

Or is it?

Much as I like the Ambrosia, there has been nothing to beat the long discontinued Birds Eye Caramel Custard.

Best sampled at around 5am after a good night out, and mixed to perfection in a plaster of paris mixing machine.

Cold out of a tin you say? Your custard is a fine choice but I raise you a fridge cold can of beans and lashings of Tabasco sauce.

Mrs g-d does not approve of this snack. Apparently it's filthy.

OH WELL DONE GARAGEDWELLEE!

I too munch on this, with added raw onions. Mmmmm.

Have you tried it with the Chipotle tobasco? Oh My Word

I used to get M and S ready made custard and their summer fruit compote, a match made in heaven. I don't know whether they still do it or whether it's seasonal but well worth checking out.

Straight out the tin at room temperature for me and if its a carton it gets dissected to get every last bit, their rice is great straight out the tin  never gets warmed up

For the food of the gods, try 50/50 custard and rice pudding. Nom.

The Ambrosia posh custard is great, and I once found a tub of Ambrosia frozen custard in Saino's; not seen it since though.

Also good is custard over decent vanilla ice cream - leave it 5 mins, and the custard freezes over the ice cream.

Incidentally, had some from a tin yesterday but we usually have the cartons. IME the tin tastes better than from the carton - does anyone find that?

I remember a really long time ago on a cycling challenge, bonking quite badly. A colleague swore by cold custard which we were all very sceptical about, some kind of running club lore. Anyway he was well stocked and I was willing to try anything and found myself quaffing down a pint. Worked wonders, made it the last 20 mile or so and even outsprinted him on the home stretch.

So glad it’s not just me that does this.

Eating it direct from the tin is wrong. It needs to be tipped into some other vessel such that you can stir in jelly babies/golden bears/star mix etc. without sloping the ambrosia nectar everywhere.

Neither tang fastics nor skittles work.

Mmm custard...

My only dilemma is, when applied to the swollen area concerned, how much is too much?

Recipe worthy of a masterchef.

Got to try it. 🙂

A friend and I stole a tin of Ambrosia out of my mum's cupboard and guzzled it. We were both sick. My mum laughed. (this was in the 70s)

One of my favourite things is that you can get instant custard mix (not Ambrosia) for 8p (in the 2010s. Wonder how much it was in the 70s)

The vanilla stuff? Surprisingly good, pored over a hot pud or some such.

Certainly not eaten cold out of the tub you bunch of degenerate perverted deviants.

Cold Ambrosia Devon and its Ricey counterpart straight from the tin or little yogurt style pot is the stuff of champions, 'nuff said.

Wow.

This thread has just reminded me that we have some (in a carton) in the freezer!

Does anyone want it?
