For a 12 year old - steer clear or is this just the way things are now? Can she inadvertantly download stuff that ends up costing a fortune or does she just have to watch adverts every hour?

We could just buy a Samsung tablet although its twice the price!

For info the Amazon thing is about 80 quid, the Samsung 170.

Had exactly the same situation last week.

Bought a Samsung.

You can unsubscribe from Special Offers at a later date, albeit at a cost (~£10 I think).

If you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty you can also use the Fire Toolbox to turn them (and other Amazon features) off.

You can buy the Amazon Fire without ads. It's more expensive, but not as expensive as the Samsung.

If you ask nicely in the chat they have been known to turn them off for free on devices used by children. Don't buy it gambling on this. But do ask before paying the fee.

Get the Kindle then use Fire Toolbox to switch them off? https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/windows-tool-fire-toolbox-v10-1.3889604/

You don't have to watch ads at all. All it is on mine(Fire HD8) is the splash screen when you wake it up. The ads are 75% for other Amazon stuff (Alexa, Kindle, streaming content) and the rest for random stuff, never NSFW. As soon as you swipe up from the home button to open the device, that's it, gone, you don't see any more ads until next time you wake the device up.

As for getting suckered into downloading or ordering expensive stuff, my tablet is linked to my Amazon account which doesn't have my payment card details stored, so nothing like that happens unless I get my card out and type in the numbers.

This vid shows the lock screen situation, I've cued it up so it goes straight to the point.

Is the Amazon tablet not also available ad-free? They have been whenever I've been looking at Kindles, you might have to scroll down in your searching a bit though. They're like an extra ten quid or something.

Yes, you can usually pay an extra tenner for ad free. When black Friday etc is on the discount is usualy bigger for the ad version. There are workarounds on Youtbe to take the ads off for free, or if you ring their customer service you can pay a tenner to have them removed.

As an aside I've got amazon fire tablets and I'm not sure I would buy another.

I had my Amazon accoutn locked due to fraud and now the thing doesn't work.

Netflix and Spotify won't let you store to SD card like the regular android version.

Loads of bloatware installed - hard to find the apps you want.

They are half the price of an equivalent android tablet for a reason.

Fire Toolbox I mentioned above sorts both issues in a couple of minutes. I’m crap with IT and even I found it a doddle to do. Bloatware gone, Google Playstore installed

My observation is there are some apps that work on iPad and android but not on Amazon - they just aren’t available to download. I’m not a techie so maybe I’m missing something but that’s been annoying a few times. Other than that the tablet is ok (I think it’s an 8” tablet that I got on sale / with nectar points for about £50-£60).

What it’s not very good at is streaming live tv - spends too long buffering (e.g last year watching the hardline on red bull tv) where my iPhone 7 or the wife’s iPad were both perfect.

Probably fine for most kids stuff though.
