I don’t live there anymore but my folks do.
We are off up there for a while as it’s their joint 70th’s.
As part of the plan we want to take them out, somewhere unique and memorable for food.
It will have to be lunch, as we have our little ones with us.
Doesn’t have to be Michelin star fancies, in fact being old school outdoor loving, socialist types, I don’t think they will be too into that anyway.
Just somewhere with amazing food, atmosphere etc etc maybe even with good walks straight out the door to walk off the lunch

Based on your description I'd go for the Barrel but there will be plenty of other recommendations along shortly.
The restaurant Graphine from Manchester moved out to Losehill House Hotel and Spa a year or two ago. I've been to Graphine when they were in Manchester, but they've moved out to their hotel.
Was lucky enough to be treated to dinner at Losehill House a while back.
It was far from cheap but very very nice and a lovely setting.
One for a special occasion certainly.
The Packhorse in Great Longstone is a cracker, in fairness the White Lion and The Crispin there are pretty good to in that order for me. Up near Monsall Head so plenty of walking available.
Plus either of Dev's at Beeley or Pilsley. The Peacock at Rowsley is also very good for food, but it's on the A6 which might put you off?
The Royal Oak at Hurdlow is pretty decent while still being down to earth, as is the Cheshire Cheese in Hope on the road out to Edale.
On a crisp winters day, you can't beat the Old Poets at Ashover, albeit outside the peak. Roaring fire, full of people with doggos. Foods generally spot on - decent carvery on Sundays if that's your thing
Grindleford Cafe is awful.

this thread made me think of Hassop Hall (though I've never been there). I see it seems to not be running at the moment- anyone know what happened?
Hassop Hall was always good, looks like its been turned into a private residence
Losehill House is lovely, though not cheap.
The Cheshire Cheese down the road is a proper country pub and worth a visit too.
Here you go pubs varying from posh gastro to relaxed and rustic, I reckon you can't go wrong in! The ones located next to tourist attractions and easy parking/villages can be very busy at peak times!

Hassop Hall shut last September, bought by a guy who owns a load of care homes as his private residence. Middle daughter had her first job there at 16, and was there till it closed. Hassop was quite unique in it's own way, shame it shut really.
I've only been to one pub in the peak in the last few years, so can't claim to be a well of information but the George in Alstonefield - its wonderful.
The George at Alstonefield did fantastic food last time I went in. The Red Lion at Birchover is good, especially on Sardinian nights when they really go to town. Not been to the Druid in Birchover since it was taken over a couple of months ago.
If you really want to push the boat out there’s Fischer's at Baslow Hall, although I’ve only been on a cheap offer day (when they weren’t imposing the dress code).
The Barrel Inn and The Red Lion in Litton were both good last time I went but it was a few years ago.
Outside of the national park, but in the high peak - try the old hall in chinley. As the name suggests 16th century old hall / Manor House (although not that big). good quality gastro pub type food, but decent portions. Can either of all from there on to Eccles pike or chinley churn / kraken edge. Or 10 mins in car to mam tor
You're spoiled for choice in the Peaks. More decent pubs than you can throw a stick at. A few that spring to mind are: The Devonshire Arms (already mentioned) at Beeley is amazing - awesome beers too. The Cock Inn at Muggington (not been myself but wife has a number of times and loads of people I know), The Black Cow at Dalbry Lees, The Horseshoes at the Ashbourne end of Long Lane, The Boot at Repton and the Dragon at Willington (same owners as the Boot).
I guess you want a pub but if a cafe with a walk then Hassop station cafe is a regular for us and we enjoy it, Hassop hall was lovely, got married there and hired it for the day and evening was superb. But alas it’s a private home again. Plenty of other choices though all above

What's the Chequers in Froggatt like these days?

Scotsmans Pack in Hathersage used to be very good too. Don't know if it still is.
I don't eat out much.
I was going to suggest Chequers too but not been in ages. Bank House in Hathersage looks good and heard good reviews but only been in for a drink myself (used to live next door so glad I moved now though as it’s packed at a weekend).
We found the food at the Chequers great when we went in December. The often overlooked Ayre Arms at Hassop does some really good pub grub too.
Stayed at the Chequers Inn this time last year on a winter deal. Good stuff, nice people, nice food and drink.
The George at alstonfield, Royal Oak in hurdlow and the Fox house on the way to hathersage are all ones I’d recommend for a very good meal close to a very good walk. George probably has the most sense of occasion.

Yes, the Old Hall's nice. The foods not radically 'different', but it's well done, the staff are friendly and it feels kind of special without being snooty. I've been in there with a friend for a mid snowy bike ride lunch and they were happy for us to take our boots off and dry out feet in front of the fire.
We had a really nice meal a few years back at the Samuel Fox Country Inn in Bradwell. I remember the food being very good, we were with picky friends from London and they enjoyed it (or said they did). Again nice without being snooty. No idea what it's like now, but it was decent when we went.
It's difficult though. Everyone has a different idea of 'amazing'. I'm pretty confident though that the Grindleford caff doesn't really feature anywhere in that general ballpark 🙂

This is flipping brilliant, thanks so much. A few I remember from my youth, although cheap beer and a climbers room was what we mainly looked for. Seems a few may have gone up market since then!
I will whittle it down and pick a couple. Might have to test some others ourselves too.

I'll be revisiting this thread too to test out some of the claims being made. Tough job but somebody's got to do it. Dev Arms X 2 (not been for over 5 years) and this place at Chinley to start. Grindleford Caf only included as a contrast to Fischers.
