I have some decent binoculars on Gumtree at the mo & have had some enquiries, mainly 'are these still available?' (I say yes then hear nothing else) Had one last night & the potential buyer said 'Thanks for getting back to me I’m buying from United State and I’m willing giving you £300 For it and I will be making an additional payment of £30 for the shipping fee to United State so get back to me if my offer is accepted' (I didn't know the USA had Gumtree)
Iv'e sold a few things on there & had a few time wasters but this one seems more iffy than normal.

What's the verdict?

I’d be suspicious just because it’s Gumtree. I’ll swap you for a really good hammer and a ball of twine if you’re interested?

Dodgy. They pay, you send them then they claim non arrival and get the money refunded through PayPal or whatever the US version big chargeback is. IIRC (must have read it on here) there is a US process that makes it easy and no chance of you appealing it.

Rule 1, if you have to ask "is it a scam?" then it's a scam.

Rule 2, no-one ever offers to pay extra for anything without prompting ever. A genuine buyer would've asked you what shipping would cost.

Rule 3, there are always other buyers.

(Rule 4, something about binoculars and seeing you coming.)

Binoculars...
Rule 6, Small or Far Away....

Wasnt there a scam alert about paying by Cheque from America on here?

Paypal gift, so buyer has very little comeback on you, or, keep the chat going and ask how payment is going to be made... waiting for the "I'll paypal you and ask my local mate to come round and collect as its easier"

B

Sounds dodge to me.

However I bought a rare kayak off a guy in germany on gumtree. I said will you send it?, he said I will find out the postage etc, I did a bank transfer. It all worked out fine.

Anyway, back to the binoculars. Will you swap them for some fishing tackle?

500 squids not a penny less, 2kg of Ambergris and meet him on the west coast of Ireland to close the deal.

That’s a pretty old school scam, although the US is a modern touch, I’ve had Russia and South America.

There’s a couple of ways they’ll do you, but often it starts with an offer that’s a bit too good to turn down (usually more than you’re asking for, for some reason or other) exchange a few messages, pay a smaller amount maybe and then there’s a ‘problem’ and they need to send a Western Union transfer or the like, but it’s okay yeah because you know them?

No need, there needn't be any scam here give them your sort code and account number nothing else.

They pay via Bacs when the money is in your account Robert's yer Mother's brother.

You send the item recorded international tracked.

Even that I would be dubious about. It limits the options but, for example, Jeremy Clarkson published his account number and sort code as a challenge. He lost when a direct debit to a charity appeared against him. The reports dont show whether he let it stand or not.
Admittedly I think it is limited to charities and if they can find your address but I would go with Cougar's advice.
Unless these are amazingly rare and special binos which might attract overseas attention then its a scam. Even if they are then its probably a scam.
Since I am lazy and not too badly paid rather than risk the scammers I would go for the known dodgy option and sell it to one of the second hand camera and general optics/pure bino(if they exist) companies.

pretty sure there's no BACS in the USA (my niece had a nightmare trying to send money from US to UK accounts as the systems don't quite work together). There's something very similar but may have different rules and I'm betting there's a way ...

course, the OP could give the buyer your account details for the "safe" payment and you then BACS him £330 when it comes in. The non-existent risk is on you - best of luck

I've sold eBay stuff that went to Ukraine, and despite misgivings, it went OK. Before eBay global shipping... latterly, global shipping has made things pretty easy as a seller.

I was offered £200 from a reputable shop in Harrogate that I've dealt with before, but that was as a trade in for some new Swarovskis & before the price of the ones I'm selling went up to at least £415. I paid £345 4 years ago. By the time the shop puts his VAT & profit on there wouldn't be much change out of say, £280
(Ive since bought some 'last years' Swaro's that had £200 off so need to sell the Leica's)
Good binocs hold their price.
Anyway, these aint going to Americay!

Yeah BACS wont do it, I believe the actual payment type is called a swift payment, to be sent they'd need your name, banks name and address and your IBAN (international bank account number) which is usually on your bank statements.

I presume you're selling them because you've realised it's easier to just stand closer to what you want to look at?

Or has decided to become a pirate, complete with eye patch, and so a monocular will suffice.

"I'm willing giving...." typical Naija syntax, as typical as "I will not want you to worry...."

Run away.
