so Whilst under taking a safe, but fairly large overtaking manoeuvre (overtaking 2 cars and a milk tanker I’d been stuck behind for several miles) on the A49 as you come to Shrewsbury, a police car (which I obviously didn’t see initially) that was parked up on the opposite side of the road facing towards me, stuck his blue lights on as I passed . Now as I’d broken the speed limit to do the over take and crossed some chevrons and the start of a solid white line competing the overtake, I assumed police would pull out, turn round and pull me over. I slowed right down preparing for this but he didn’t.

was i meant to just pull over on the other side of the road and wait for him (slowed right down for the next mile or so and no sign of him)? Was it just a friendly warning? Do they have on board speed cameras and he was signalling I’d just been done?

What does it mean? Am I currently on the run from the law?

See the border? Head for that.

Other than that he could have just given you a polite “flash” to make you aware that a) he thinks you pushed that manoeuvre too far b) warning you that other stuffs coming or c) you are nicked my son.

if he stuck his blue lights on as you were passing rather than shortly after, theres a fair chance he had just been given an incident to go to?

Probably just trying to shake you up a little bit (and quite rightly by the sounds of it 🙂 )

Driving over chevrons bordered with a broken white line is technically legal but often riles other drivers, but the solid white line, or chevrons with a solid line around them is just plain illegal, a bit like crossing the stop line on a red traffic light.

I've seen cops stick their blue lights on behind middle lane hogs, heard them over to the inside lane and then turn off the lights and shoot off.

I'd go with a). I doubt even the most hot-headed officer would let you know he'd just got evidence on you like that. If anything comes of it I'd counter that purposely drawing your attention away from the road with his blue lights made the situation more dangerous (insert tongue into cheek here).

I had quite an epic slide (at legal speeds) in an old 205 on a patch of diesel years back and granted it must have looked pretty dramatic to the policeman who drove around the corner towards me just at the right/wrong time. The look of slack jawed indignation on his face still amuses me now, he didn't turn round to nick me though.

Sell everything. Change your name and move to somewhere without an extradition policy.

They probably thought "Look at that eejit" and gave you a flash as a warning.

Or you woke them up

Or made the officer spill their donut into their coffee.

I love the fact that you slowed right down afterwards. I bet the drivers of the two cars and the milk tanker were complaining about being stuck behind you.

Nah... That will come later after they've given him some supper. Everything has its price...

I had something similar happen to me many years ago in the Lake District. I started a decent overtake then circumstances changed as I was alongside so I bounced the car off the rev limiter to finish the job in hand as I decided that was safer than all other options. A copper saw me and pulled me. I said something along the lines of “I was in the middle of a manoeuvre and my decision was to complete it rather than pull back in” and he agreed that my logic was good, gave me a producer (remember those...?) and let me on my way.

There’s bugger all wrong with using chevrons bordered with dashed lines. We thrashed that point to death in conversation when I was doing my IAM (motorcycle) training. If I recall correctly the Highway Code said something like you could enter them ‘if necessary’ and it’s necessary to enter them to overtake safely. Cross solid white lines at your peril though  even on the bike it’s very very rare I even consider it because you deserve all you get if you’re caught

Finally, overtaking is not a crime. Even though some people seem to think it is. Nor is it an affront to your driving prowess.... which is mainly what lots of people think I reckon. 🙂

WTF Has happened to my last post? I edited it and it’s inserted my first paragraph as a quote. Another  one of the reasons I use this forum less and less these days.

They got a call as you were passing them that’s all.

Except you shower all the other road users around you with the grit and debris that has accumulated there, due to not many people doing it. Not particularly considerate for everyone else.

Boo hoo!  God forbid you get some grit on your car.

Those areas are often full of broken glass and road litter. Don't be surprised if you puncture.

It’s more the nuts, bolts, bits of lorry tyre, rusty chunks of exhaust, etc that I’d be concerned about. <redacted>

Oh yeah, it’s a veritable scrap yard of dangerous pointy things as soon as you stray over a chevron.

It could have been a warning that you were pushing your luck a little.

if there was a real danger, trust me, you would know about it.

and you wouldn’t have needed to slow down either😳😳

nowt to actually worry about, but perhaps you need to slow down a little.

V8 I'm sure you're normally one for "spirited" driving on most trafficy type posts, what's up? I may be wrong though and thinking of someone else.

As above some people hate overtaking, especially when it's completed by someone in a transit van....

Spirited or otherwise, I’m one for ‘attentive and considerate to other human beings’ type driving. Nothing wrong with not being a dick.

Probably just giving you a warning that they have seen it.

I remember on the A4074 Red Lane; if anyone knows it from Caversham out towards Oxford big downhill where everyone overtakes I was seen by a cop car a mile away over the downs he had his blue lights on and I wondered who he was going after for  a minute then realised it was me! A stern finger wagging as we passed; always remember that and I do slow down on that ever since, so the finger wagging worked.

Actually, on the same stretch going the other way at the top of the hill are diagonal lines, these are not lines you want to cross on a Harley whilst trying to overtake a lorry in the rain just to get a clear road ahead; I now realise they are raised slippery lines and but for the grace of God I did not go under the lorry.

I was a dick both times but I learnt from them

Probably warning you that you were clearly daft for overtaking with a Police car there.

A similar thing happened to me, I was fully expecting the Rozzers to do a swift u-turn and catch me up but they didn't.

Treat it as a warning and a clip 'round the lughole!

using the chevrons with dotted lines is a perfectly acceptable move and one I used to use a lot for overtaking.  Some folk don't seem to realise its a bit of road to be used.
