my laptops old and tired now, been running linux mint on it but it still keeps switching off now and then and its a big old unit. looking at something a bit more modern and tailored to how i use it.

i pretty much only use it for internet/email and very slight office editing, maybe some torrents from time to time. also using it to connect android phones and drag and drop photos/vids/music.

i like the look of android 10" tablet with a seperate bluetooth keyboard, but not sure it would be a good substitute for office and torrent use.

chromebook? netbook? or do i just want a smaller laptop? 🙂

not sure which direction to go so has anyone got any good suggestions?

thanks

if you're looking for something with a keyboard I'd be inclined to go with a chromebook. decent enough for browsing the web and getting mails and nice and portable with great battery life.

cheap too, relatively speaking.

I think Lenovo make a laptop with a touch screen called the lenovo yoga, I'm not sure how good it is as I'm Apple not android, but worth a look.

A phone and a strong pair of reading glasses. With a voluminous micro-SD it does everything my PC does for 120e (Samsung Galaxy Nova but anything similar would do the job).

+1 I had a play with one a couple of weeks ago, very nice. Pricey, though - but then it is a direct competitor with a Mac Air so not entirely unsurprising.

I use an Asus Transformer, functions as both laptop and tablet (keyboard is detachable) full version of windows and office included, covers all the bases for me.

iPad with a keyboard? I'm typing this on an iPad with a Logitech keyboard, turns it into basically a laptop, but it's connected magnetically so can unclip and use it as a tablet.

You could try a Chromebook and a Synology NAS for storage and Torrent duties. The NAS can be a download station and will work without the laptop being on once you've set the torrents running.
You can then stream any content to the Chromebook or other computer, smart TV in the house.

Surface 3. The Surface 2 is lovely but runs Windows RT so you won't be able to use all your normal software. The Surface 3 runs Windows 8.1 and is a really lovely device.

Not cheap though.

the surface 2 pro will run win 8.1 but is smaller 10 inch screen. I believe the surface 3 goes 12inch.

Both have intel i5 with cpus so pretty handy horsepower. You can hack the chrome books to run ubuntu if you were that way inclined. It depends on your bugdet.

Yes but Chromebooks are fairly underpowered for general use - they are super fast because their ChromeOS build is so optimised.

Look for reviews of the Yoga Pro 3 due out next month. Fantastic 2 in 1 laptop that will be in my grubby mitts soon.
