I have a mini roadtrip coming up in a couple of weeks - 4 days in Keswick, followed by 4 days in Kielder.  The long range forecast is pretty diabolical at the moment, and I know it might change in the next 10 days but just looking for any recommendations of other things to do if riding / walking isn't an option?  Or should I postpone and try again at another (drier) time??

Surely ‘no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes’ comes into play in this part of the world when you holiday in late September?

it can be genuinely refreshing getting out in the elements.

Lots of walks round keswick staying low if rainy or cloudy.  Castlerigg stone circle, derwen****er circular for eg.  My favourite wet weather walk would be lingholm kitchen for brunch, lodore spa (you have to prebook), 77 bus route starts and ends in keswick, allow 2 hours, fab scenery.

Nah. I tend to agree with the OP that there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad timing:

Or should I postpone and try again at another (drier) time??

I've done loads of stuff in shit weather, but if he can change the date easily then I'd suggest he keep that option open till closer to the time.

( But then I'm an absolutely obsessive optimiser)

Forgive me if I'm missing the glaringly obvious, but is this not why the British Countryside is littered with excellent Public Houses?

I have until midnight tonight to cancel the AirB&B 🙃

Obviously if it's light rain we'd crack on, but as I've never been and I'd like to maximise the experience of big beautiful views on rides / walks (and I want to tick off the Borrowdale Bash).
If it's hammering down it won't happen - I have still have memories of holidays from many many years ago stuck in a house because it was biblical rain outside.

Just get on with it!!!

Even a wet time away is better than staying at home in the pissing rain!

Not really. At some point the right clothes is t-shirt and shorts next to a log fire inside. Doesnt matter what you are wearing if the wind is howling and you are high up on the hills it is going to be unpleasant and somewhat risky. Add in sideways rain so you can see bugger all and then you need some good nav skills.

Obviously plenty of people have those but to save some of those who do, eg Mountain Rescue, needing to prove it I think for most of us it would be a bad idea to see if we do.

I do like occasionally going out in truly appalling weather but its always close at home which I know backwards and have several escape options vs being out somewhere remote I dont know well.

I should add to my comment of "Even a wet time away is better than staying at home in the pissing rain!"...

...except when young children are involved - then being stuck at home is by far the better option! 🤣

Of course. What sort of clothes would have stopped me from being blown off my feet several times when on Beinn liath Mor a Ghiubhais this morning?

Now I know what I'm doing so I picked a route that was protected from the wind for most of it with no cliffs and a quick, safe escape. But to suggest my favoured route for today on Sail Mor would have been feasible with a different jacket is ridiculous.

After you've been walking in the rain and bought 'all the gear' in Keswick's shops head to the Squarange for a coffee, read a book, play a game, realise it's now beer o'clock so have one of those followed by another (etc.), have a pizza and eventually head to bed well fed,  warmed up and happy.

That would be my plan for a wet day in Keswick.

There's always the cinema for a film if that appeals.

Sadly never been to Kielder.

There's not much at all to do at Kielder if bad weather is enough to stop you going outside, there's a pub but nit sure how often it opens these days, the following is from Google AI summary

Yes, the small village of Kielder in Northumberland is widely considered the most remote village in England, characterized by its deep rural location, lack of public transport, and significant distances to the nearest cash machines and shopping centers. It serves as a base for Kielder Water & Forest Park, an area renowned for its vast forest, stargazing opportunities within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, and outdoor activities like walking, cycling, and watersports

Honister slate mine? It's been a while since I went, but a lot of it is under ground/rock IIRC.

Oh, and not the highwire course if that's what you thought I meant.

So did you cancel? I used to live in Keswick and I'd bail in your situation. Why, the Cars of the Stars Museum isn't even there anymore!

I'm in a similar position myself at the moment, on the first week of booked leave, wondering whether to cancel the rest. This time last year I was cycling up the West Coast in SPD sandals and a t-shirt. Bah.

Oh, and maybe avoid Keswick Wetherspoons (but then that goes without saying).

So did you cancel?

Nope, going to continue with the plan, and if anything it'll be a nice change of scenery from home for a few days.  We've got a couple of cosy B&Bs booked so will take some books, but I'm sure we'll find a relatively dry window to get some outdoor fun!

Still have a week to go, and once Storm Amy blows through it might change for the betterer...?
