Looking for a new pen knife and was wondering if there are any alternatives to a Swiss Army Knife?

I've looked at Leatherman Gerber but they are closer to multitools that what I would call a penknife. I've also got a Leatherman penknife but don't really like it as all the edges feel harsh.
Must have a Philips screwdriver and be UK legal - so no locking blades.

It's not illegal to have a locking blade, it just puts the onus on you to provide a good reason for having in on you if challenged.  Leatherman on your belt while out shopping - expect a tap on the shoulder and possible arrest/prosecution.  If you're a handyman at work, not so much. It's the hassle though and I fully understand why people opt for non locking blades to avoid it.

As jambo says - the law is an ass.  Locking blades are a safety feature designed to prevent the blade folding in use and chopping your fingers off! It does eff all to prevent knife crime because scrotes aren't going to spend a hundred quid on a multitool with a locking 3 inch blade when they can buy a cheap kitchen knife with a 10 inch blade for a tenner.  Classic piece of ill thought out, hasty legislation being enacted so politicians can be seen to be tackling a problem - without actually doing so.  In fact, in this instance increasing the likelihood of injury for ordinary people.

Sorry - that rapidly escalated into a full-on rant before I realised! 😊

One of the most popular SAK, but with the corkscrew swapped for a Philips head screwdriver.

Why not a Swiss Army Knife? I have many of them and they are great. Do you just want to try something different or have you had problems with them?

It may not be illegal, but I've been told by a copper that CPS adivce to cops is charge everyone and let the courts sort it out. I don't want to take that risk unless I am deer stalking or on my way to chefs training session.

boker plus

+1, have a look at the boker plus range and you'll be sure to find something that will fit the bill.

i have one of their 'worldwide' knives, the worldwide bit being that its designed to meet the laws of most countries - under 3 inch blade, no locking mech, two handed opening etc, however the spring on the slip joint is that strong that there is very little chance of it folding in on you, also has a 90 degree stop to further lessen chance of personal injury

pretty sure they do a version of it with various tools. great blade as well

I've got a couple of Swiza swiss army style knives and prefer them to the victorinox versions, mainly because they're a rubbery texture rather than the hard plastic as well as being a bit more ergonomic.

They only do a couple of models in UK spec but if you contact them they'll UK-ify any of their range.

Just fancy something different. I've had the same Swiss army knife for nearly 30 years, but there are things I never use. Like the wood saw and why does it have a big blade and a little blade. Why not just one? (I'm not a fan of unnecessary duplication)

Check out beaver-bladeworks on Instagram. Custom Swiss Army knives beautifully made with your choice of tools. Only issue is I think their books are closed to new orders just now. (other issue might be ££££s as they are not cheap)

Not sure how handy you are but you could custom make your own by cannibalising 1 or more and getting some nice custom scales.

Personally love the wood saw. Came to the rescue only this week when stupid dog dropped her ball in the river. Wood saw + some willow meant I could fish it out!

Get one with the things you want on it?

Two blades is is a great feature. Little one kept very sharp for whittling spears arrows and other such survivalisms. Big one for cutting your pork pie.

Does anyone know any alternatives that don't use awful steel. I have got used to s30 at the very least and the victorinox steel just goes blunt so so quickly for me.
