Might've asked this before but cannot find it or remember if I posted it or just thought about posting it.

We have wood floors in our modern three floor house in all the living rooms, but the hall, kitchen and dining room downstairs are all tiled.  The two landings and two stairs are carpeted.

Now, I'm beginning to hate the carpet for gathering dust and being dirty, so I'd like to change it for something else.  But what?  Sisal etc seem unsuitable for stairs.  Wood would be ok but I'm not sure it can work because even if we did the stairs in wood and were able to deal with different flooring across door thresholds (or replaced all the rooms) the direction of boards would be wrong in either the rooms or the landing.

So what can be done?  Some kind of wood that will not clash with the existing wood?  Something else?

Thinking of something like a mosaic wood floor in the hallways and maybe the same colour wood in normal strips on the stair tread.  Some kind of colour complimentary to the ones in the living rooms.

Karnedean? Quiet, not cold and easy to keep clean.

Too thin - you'd have to step up into the rooms from the hallway.

When our kitchen was done the floor people put an extra layer of one of the floor gunges to reduce the step up. Your house may be very different of course.
