We've booked a weekend in Alnwick later this year for the first time in at least 10yrs

Where is currently good for food and drink?

I have hazy memories of an Italian, a curry house and very fond memories of the John Bull Inn's ales and whiskies. Having been through there  on the bike last year it did look a bit different

for a proper nice drink, the Ale Gate will take some beating.
nice and cosy, with great beers and good live music.
spent a very chilled sunday afternoon there and couple of month ago.

Alas, I'm on Android. It lacks that feature.

Tanner's Arms, very good ale, exceptional jukebox, central location (could be part of a tour)

We had a good meal at the Joiners Arms in High Newton by the Sea last summer, if you're prepared to drive out there

If you watch Hairy Bikers you may be tempted to go to Amble to eat at Old Boat House or Fish Shack. Don't. The service is abysmal and the food is dire. First time MrsJ has ever in all the <mumble> years we've been together sent something back.

Otherwise well-regarded Indian in Shilbottle, bacon sarny with the pensioners at Barter Books.

Thanks guys

I should have said that we don't want to drive anywhere for food/drink, that's why we're staying in Alnwick for a change.

We go up to Northumberland a lot but usually further north. we've probably been to every pub and cafe from Alnmouth to Berwick 😎

I'll know where to come for advice. This year we've decided holidays won't be SW but more NE.

That’s odd, we were up there about a month ago and went to the Fish Shack.
The service was fine and the food was absolutely fantastic!

Android worked.

Drink first.

Ale Gate

Pig in Muck but it’s on reduced hours for winter to help keep costs low, they do food but limited this time of the year.

Harry’s

Food:

Cafe Terino Italian opposite the playhouse

De Sopra just through to tower on the left Italian owned by the same people

Dirty Bottles on Narrowgate good for beer too

Sherkahn Indians in the market place

Mumbai flavours on Narrowgate

Adam and Eve is good too but sometimes has little atmosphere

Then there’s you generic pubs and kebab places

Enjoy!

Thanks @Drac !!

That's really helpful.

Is the John Bull still a good real ale pub?

We thought the John Bull was ghastly, soapy beer etc. Tanners I believe has changed hands in relatively recent times and the interior has been done out.

Ate in the Dirty Bottle several times last year. Good food, worth booking at weekends as always seemed busy. Carlos for fish and chips.

Both in centre of town.

Yeah during holiday periods it gets packed, not so bad off season though.

Haven’t been for a while but the Red Lion in Alnmouth 10mins drive down the road was very nice last time I was up that way.

We went to the tree house for dinner a few months back, easy walk from town, something a bit different in terms of the restaurant itself, menu was fairly normal but the food was pretty good.

I thought the Tree House was a vastly overrated shed selling fairly mediocre pub fare at restaurant prices.

Victoria House is on reduced hours now too to help costs down, cracking chippy.

I liked the 'strawberry lounge' cafe. Fabulous selection of scones.

That’s a feature of Northumberland cafes IME - lots of cakey things. But dire coffee. In an age where every street in every other county in the country is end to end artisan coffee brewers, in Northumberland they only serve dishwater (counter-examples gratefully received!!).

Just got back from a nice weekend in Alnwick and thought I'd say thanks to those with recommendations

John Bull Inn - disappointingly only a couple of draught ales on but they were nice. They've still got billions of whiskies and loads of bottled Belgian beers.

Ale Gate - very busy, some great beers from near and far

Tanner's Arms - decent beer, quite busy and the landlord/barman wasn't too miserable (nor was he that welcoming). Great jukebox as someone said earlier

We ate at Di Sopra. Good food, nice staff
