Alloy wheels, powder coat or paint?

The wheels on my van are looking a bit tatty so it’s either have them painted or for an extra £25 per wheel powder coated. The guy who is going to paint them ( but hasn’t seen them yet ) says if they need shot blasting ( which he dosent do ) he knows another company who will do that then powder coat them as well.
Any preferences? Doing them black if that matters.

If you have van alloys that have chunky spokes then powder coating would be fine.

Sometimes the extra heat involved with the powder coating causes problems/cracking on delicate alloys with thin spokes.

Not saying it couldn't happen, but I worked on an industrial estate with a couple of wheel refurbishment businesses and both seemed to powder coat everything.

Same with bike frames, you could get it hot enough to affect the heat treatment, but it shouldn't.

I'd just take them to someone who refurbishes / powder coats wheels as their business?

I just googled the one near me and their website only talks about powdercoat, doesn't even offer wet paint as an option.

Where are you OP,? There's a great place in Castleford called Midas touch for powder coating wheels, if you're anywhere near there.

Powder coating would be my choice.

We have used LSN Coatings in Castleford over the last 20 years for bike frames and car parts and they have always been first class and reasonably priced.

Saying that we have a local firm, Metal Magic in Barnsley, that you can leave the car/van one day and pick it up the next day and they will remove the wheels from it and do all the work needed including rebalancing for £75 per wheel.

Dropped the youngest daughters in on Tuesday and picked it up yesterday. They needed doing as they had started going around the valve area. They have made an excellent job of them

I have no idea. But if it were me I'd either pay extra to have it done properly or just ignore it and leave them looking tatty. You can't see them when you're driving.

Thanks people, I’m in Kingston upon Hull. So after your comments I shall get them powder coated.

I've only ever seen them use acid dipping and powder coating on Wheeler Dealers so I'd* go with that.

*I'd actually leave them tatty.

Use someone who has experience with wheels. Going a bit thick on the wheel mounting face can cause the wheel to loosen when braking heat softens the finish

My solution was to pay £75 for some marginally less tatty wheels off ebay.

On that note, have you looked at aftermarket wheels? For not much more than refurbishing you might be able to get entirely new wheels.

Also bear in mind the tyres, if they've got less than about a 4mm tread left it's probably worth getting new ones from blackcircles or similar and having them fitted as it'll save you ~£25 a wheel fitting down the line.

Powdercoat for sure. It's inexpensive for what it is. (I paid £150 for my last set, from a dude that does excellent work) and combined it with a tyre change so that saved a bit of extra money (got some very cheap mail order tyres and got him to fit, it makes no difference to him whether he's refitting my old tyres or fitting new ones)

Durable, looks great... Yep there can be some downsides but none of them should come up if the person doing it is competent.

Powdercoat - had loads of car/van wheels done. Only exception might be if they're steel wheels. It's difficult to get the powder in-between the barrel and the middle in addition to getting the media out of the crevices when they've been blasted which can cause gaps for water to get into and the powder to lift. Easier to get paint into the gaps...

Definitely find someone who does wheels specially, moreso if they can offer a drive in/out service. Makes things loads easier. Raw Wheels near York are decent if anyone is local.

Just contacted a local company who specialise in wheels and I’m going in to have a look at some colours /finishes next time I’m passing.
I shall have a look at aftermarket wheels as well.
