Turns out the wheels (car, alloy) I bought off eBay are buckled, or at least one is.  It's on the inside and is about 5mm out of round rather than a dent. There's a small ding in another.  How much did you pay?  Did it include powder coating as well?

Out of round - axially or radially? If it's axial, and there are no cracks visible, if the tyre sealing surface is good, I'd leave it alone, 5mm is a very small percentage of rim width. Radially, assuming it's deformed inwards, again cracking would be the concern. Is straightening going to exacerbate any stresses?

I'm not sure alloy wheels can be 'straightened' without risking cracking or shattering them, can they?

They can be filled and sanded and refinished in the case of small dings.

A quick Google suggests I'm totally wrong!

Although a small ding probs just needs sanding smooth and touched up with suitable paint?
Any pics?

We had a Fiat Seicento Abarth that was very prone to bending rims, the unsupported inner part, in potholes. Lacking money and sense I cut a piece of hardwood to the radius the wheel should have been and used a small bottle jack to pressure it. I achieved almost roundness, certainly no vibration. Nothing bad happened either, however, I’d not worry about a wheel that was 5mm out unless there is vibration that balancing couldn’t cure.

£96 for a single wheel correction, no powder coat. £500 for all four golf alloys to be refurbished and diamond cut.
