The front alloy wheels on our car have lost their shine.

Compared with the rears they look really quite dull.

Coupled with the dullness they have what looks to be permanent water marks on the surface.

When wet they look great as this brings back the luster but once dry they look a little ...... meh!

I guess they could do with a polish or some sort of refinishing 😕

Would prefer not to go down the re powdercoating route.

Any suggestions?

Alloy wheel cleaner and polish should help bring them back.

Clean them, polish and wax. They'll t-cut up just like the body. However don't expect it to last long and do expect it to get worse rapidly. Personally I just let mine get really shocking and then sell the car 😀

I would try some cheaper oven cleaner spray same effect and not overpriced like the gucci stuff they advertise, used some on mine and it only cost a pound or so from funnily enough a pound shop, should be ok if you rinse it straight off and spray a protector on them.

If the water has got under the lacquer ie if theyve been curbed, then polish won't help. They'd need resealing.

I've got some GHB and GBL in a drawer in my bedroom if you'd like some.

Sounds like brake dust/road dirt to me, especially is it doesn't wash off with normal soap and water. Assuming the pain is intact get some alloy wheel cleaner. It will work wonders, just remember to wear gloves! For best results, take the wheel off. It is expensive and i just use phophoric acid solution from work as its much the same stuff, but you may not have access to that!

Pretty agressive stuff to use on something that is supposed to look nice.

To add - the wheels are clean and the lacquer is intact - no curb damage - looks like they just need a polish.

Not on my new C 180 though 😆 Just had it detailed.

It should be ok if you rinse it off and dont leave it on long, if the alloy is pitted then it may lift the surface up but then so would any decent cleaning.
