Lady on phone trying to buy lots of stuff with a credit card. Mild alarm bells but card accepted.
She then phoned back to buy more stuff. Card declined. Big alarm bells.
She says she will collect goods later.
Use card number to find that it's registered in Australia. Lady was english.
Phone my credit card terminal people who say card has gone through so it's not registered as stolen.
Phoned Mastercard to say card is probably being used fraudulently.
Wanted to check of its stolen.
"Can't tell you that".
Eventually got passed through 6 different departments and ended up in Australia with a lady who asked me to email someone.
All along I'm telling people that if they tell me of its stolen we can hopefully get the cops to intercept the lady when she comes to collect goods.
Stupid.
And that is my rant of the day.

Paying over the phone with a card then collecting in person always makes me suspicious.

But yeah, no-one really cares about it - especially since with CNP fraud it's usually the retailer who takes the hit.

@zippykona

So you have a situation where if a Credit Card (that you are in possession of all details for) is being ignored for security, and most payments shortly will be clawed back by owner?

How close is the LBS and do they take credit cards?

Can you get her to bring the card when she collects and then either do a ‘pin check’ transaction for a penny or something, or ask for corroborating ID?

She phoned back try another card and I casually started chatting about australia she hung up.
The credit card people really didn't seem that fussed about the fraud.

All budgeted for in the APR figure....

It's what known as a 'victimless crime'.

It's what known as a 'victimless crime'.

It may be known as victimless, but it's not actually victimless.

It's quite frustrating to see that despite thee fact that there's a high chance that fraud is likely to take place at a known time and place that the authorities aren't interested...

our society frustrates me so much at times - I'm not sure if it's always been like this, or as I get older I see more of it.

hence the quotes....

The CC company budget for x% crime and as long as fraud stays within budget, they hit their targets and everyone is happy. It's the small traders who don't get refunded who come off worse...

On every card transaction we do we are charged 1p to check that it is not stolen.
They still don't gauruntee that we will get the funds though.
I wonder if this is the new PPI as we are being charged for a service that they are not providing.

Can you not just pull a "chain reaction"? Phone her back and say the items are out of stock/damaged, and issue a refund?

Best case, the card has been cancelled so the refund won't work.

Worst case, you just have the items on "back order" for a few weeks/months until she loses interest.

Tell her company policy that you need matching photo ID for collections. Phone and say "sorry, we are not sure if you were told that". Apologising just in case sort of thing.
If she is genuine she won't mind, if not she won't turn up.
Please do something.

As I mentioned she hung up once I started talking about Australia.
We had already refunded the card and were going to ask for payment again if she turned up.
It’s just so annoying that she could have been arrested if the credit card company would just tell me if the card was stolen.
I will get World Pay to confirm why we are paying a 1p per transaction fee for them to check if the card is stolen when it obviously doesn’t work. Surely if I’m being charged for a service it should work.

She has a list of numbers, long card number and 3 digit security code, but not the card itself. You can buy these lists in dodgy pubs. Never hand over your card in a restaurant or anywhere else as all it takes to get scammed is a combo of the back and front numbers on your card.

The trader will take the hit as the CC company will take back the payment, probably in several months.

Good luck, demand to see the card on collection of goods. Her cousin will come to collect anyway, not her.

If she had kept the original order believable and not phoned back for another stupid order she might have got away with it in a different shop.
It's so frustrating that she is not banged up right now just because of a "I can't tell you that".

Card fraud seems to be low priority and has been for years. Mine was stolen and used 6 times in 4 different off licenses and shops to buy booze and fags within about half an hour. All of them had cameras. Police not arsed.
