Spin.their character arc for as long as possible so they ride the gravy train?
Well, no, I don't think so. If we were in Season six, then maybe, but we are four episodes into an entirely new story. I like how it isn't just about putting People/Hybrids or whatever against Aliens for some slasher action. They are developing characters, giving them roles and, quite clearly, some characters have their own agendas, more of which have come out in the latest episode, and I am sure more stories will develop. I liked Ade Edmondson being given a bit more screen time in this episode, and I think we'll have a surprise to come from him shortly. And Ron Weasely played her part in this episode too – that's another potentially interesting plot.
Just watched Aliens for the first time in years. It's rather better than Alien:Earth! And how come the actual aliens are far more convincing (and less humanoid!) in a film from nearly 40 years ago?? Crazy

sorry that was supposed to be in todays photo thread, can't seem to delete it 🙈

Just pretend it's some very clever obscure reference to something in some other movie and then when people don't get it, post this gif.

Subtle nod to Blade Runner?

You are joking? I watched Alien last year after taking our eldest to see the new at the time movie. We came home and watched the first couple of films and those early aliens couldn't have looked more like people in a costume if they'd tried.
Second episode had me thinking this really isn’t going to be a good show but it’s slowly developing into something.
those early aliens couldn't have looked more like people in a costume if they'd tried.
Must've watched a different 'Aliens' film to me. It was like they had used expensive CGI in the Earth shows so had to show these things with human like jaws and bodies, but just a big time trial helmet on. Whereas in Aliens it's filmed in such a way that mostly you don't see a complete alien, just a quick glimpse in darkness. Except when Ripley goes looking for Newt in the egg laying place. Then you have the big alien hanging from the ceiling. Yeah, it's got a jaw, but it's so much better than the new ones. I didn't see man in a suit in the whole film. Musta blinked during that bit.
Ep. 4 was my favourite so far, largely on the strength of Ade Edmondson's performance and that of the sheep. Still Very Silly.
My continued thinking is exactly when Kirsh will go rogue and decide that Boy Genius would make a good starting point for a culture och chestbursters. Olyphant is playing the role very well.
Dont think this is a spoiler as i am asking for suggestions but why is Wendy so special? I know she is the 1st but every indicator is pointing towards her having extra abilities. Has she been given a turbo boost button?
Also why did they not take the opportunity to show some of her skills when the opportunity arose with the alien? I know a lot of the premise of Alien is using your imagination but if she is super fast or super strong, i havent seen it yet
Also, what is Kirsh's story? Is he the same as the kids or something else?
From what I understand, Kirsh is a 100% vanilla android, but developed by Prodigy instead of Weyland-Yutani.
No idea about Wendy. I got the feeling she was older than the others when she transitioned, so maybe this is an artefact of her being about as old as you can be and still make the transition, or maybe slightly too old and there were errors in the transfer that caused it.
They seem to be alluding to Wendy having extra skills. Like when the girl bragged about learning french and the guy asked her if she could speak alien.
And I think that is the key... They alla ppear to have the ability to download informaiton and skills (like Neo in the Matrix), but Wendy learned that organically rather was programmed/supplemented with it.
That's the key for how they are supposed to turn out I guess... Human conciousness in a brain that allows expansion and speed much greater than a human's, with a body that is stronger and faster than a human's.
I watched the first 3 episodes tonight and not bad at all.
2 small issues. First, the little info about which corporation controls controls the "universe". That slightly irked me.lol The universe is a bit big and in this timeline the human race is likely a "bug" compared to other lifeforms out there.
The second was that in comparison to Foundation it's just incredibly inferior in almost every way (imo) but Foundation is truly outstanding so I'm being a little unfair really.
I'll be watching the rest though. 👍
Foundation is truly outstanding so I'm being a little unfair really.
hmm. My partner didn't like Foundation at all. I almost didn't watch season 2 and I've not rushed for S3. Theres something about the tone I just find difficult.
Subtle nod to Blade Runner?
The show's influence by Blade Runner isn't that subtle, eh?
I was describing it to my GF as a mash-up of Aliens and Blade Runner, and Kirsch's hair feels like a blatant homage to Roy Batty.
Anyway, it's been interesting but not gripping so far - after ep4 I can feel myself wanting to know what happens next a bit more.
Hope Ade Edmondson's role continues to grow, he's so good.
Very much so.
My comment was about dakuan's misplaced owl and thols2's reply. Specifically the Tyrell Corp owl.
Regards
Righto, gotcha now
Subtle nod to Blade Runner?
They’re set in the same universe.
E5. Holy crap!
So if I take out a Disney subscription to watch this, what else is worth watching on there?
If you're a Timothy Olyphant fan, 2010's 'The Crazies' is currently free on Prime.
E5 was a lot more enjoyable than the last few for me.
Must admit i thought the eyeball was a bit of a lame/gimmicky creature but I really like it now, a properly formidable baddie!
How much can we discuss without using the spoiler tag?
screw it...
Would fit that the eye us actually a goodie.
But I think spoilers are an accepted risk of this thread?
So if I take out a Disney subscription to watch this, what else is worth watching on there?
andor. Even if you’ve never had any interest in Star Wars. Best thing in the canon.
lots of good movies, that are available remarkably soon after the cinema. To name a few:
a complete unknown
a real pain
poor things
Get back (I know there’s 9 hours of this but I found it gripping)
all of us strangers.
empire of light
banshees of inershirrin.
(or if you want vue fare all the Star Wars, marvel, Indiana Jones’s, mission impossible)
I think I just held my breath for an hour – episode 5 was *SO* good! And they keep getting so much out of the characters – this week I loved Teng's little cameo.
The eyeball - is it actually a baddie? It tried to warn the science officer about the tick that was escaping. Then it appeared to save the captain from the Xenomorph, giving it a good kicking in the process.
I think there may be more to come from that one.
Episode 5 was a winner for me. I worry what will happen if eyeball ever gets itself into a Xenomorph though. Thats going to take some stopping.
I wondered if that was coming, but not sure the Xenomorph has eyes for it to replace?

Sent me down a rabbit hole of looking at Alien images. There are definitely some that appear to have something like an eye area of the skull, and others that don't.
Me too. Closest to a set of eyes was the ripley alien/human type thing in resurection.
Just had a look at trailer for episode 6.
I can't wait for next Wednesday already!
Ep5 was excellent.
If i can understand the timeline. Alien Earth precedes Alien the original movie 🤔
Interesting thoughts. Mrs Anagallis thought the creepy eye was trying to warn the scientist about the leeches, I thought it was distracting her...

Same between my daughter and I. It would be a nice twist to have an altruistic alien species. I have christened it 'the sp-eye-derpuss'.
The main thing that bothers me is that the Alien looks like a bloke in a leather suit with a big mask on. It was the same in one the later movies.
But, are they meant to be human-ish because that's What they've incubated in? If the eggy creature clasped onto a sheep, would it look sheepy?

That's a really disturbing scene. Watched it again recently and really didn't enjoy it.

Me too. I thought it was telling the other one what to do.

Kinda. I think they say in Alien3 they take on traits from the host, so human hosts == bipedal, dog == quad (Alien3-style), but this is contradicted in the Aliens vs. Predator graphical novels where a cargo hold of cow-like beasts gets infected and spawns "normal" aliens.
Mrs Anagallis thought the creepy eye was trying to warn the scientist about the leeches, I thought it was distracting her...
But then it attacked the alien... I think it was warning, maybe because it wants the host for itself, maybe not.
But then it attacked the alien... I think it was warning, maybe because it wants the host for itself, maybe not.
Question is: is the Eye immune to acid blood to occupy the xenomorph as a host?
And, where are all the leeches that (at least) infected the two soldiers on the crashed spaceship?

I doubt Boy Kavalier is going to be afforded the quick death of a xenomorph encounter. Maybe the smaller beasties are being banked for later suffering.
Fantastic episode, love how it shifted our perception of Morrow for the coming episodes.
Would be happy to see more of him and a bit less of the boy genius and kids.

This is really interesting. I hadn't been paying as close attention as some of you, and I had to go and find a recap on what's what 😀
Also interested to see how smart the Eye is given that it tried to get one of the children. Could it drive a synthetic or is it limited to biologicals? Is the optic nerve the highest bandwidth available to it and, if so, does that stop it driving the xenos.
Ugh, back to utter bilge this week.
So, you're a multi-trillion, galaxy-spanning mega-corporation, planning a decades-long deep space mission to gather highly dangerous, astronomically valuable alien specimens for your bio-weapons programme. Do you compose your crew of:
a) The absolute pinnacle of human ability, drawn from your bottomless talent pool; or
b) Norman Wisdom x 15?
Also, who knew that you could just get up off the ground in front of the alien and simply run away? Seemingly, it won't catch you, despite running like a cheetah.
Also, I've decided that the other specimens are all just a bit crap. Really just thinly disguised terrestrial animals: Ooooh, a blood-sucking insect! Ooooh, an Octopus that's also an eyeball!! That big flower-alien-thing had better really bring it, when it finally kicks off.
On the plus side, I did think that the adult drone did actually look good and move well. Shame about literally everything else.
Must say Episode 5 upped the tension. Just watching Resurrection on Disney (not one of the best but I've not seen it more than once).
Why did the boy cavalier sanction the use of child synthetics in the rescue mission?
in his eyes, they’re officially deceased and disposable.
The consciousness transplanting technology is proven, and there’s no shortage of potential donors.
hes also interested in observing how they grow and develop within challenging circumstances.
No point treading water.
but Prodigy corp had something else in the pipeline that would make transplanting the consciousness of terminally ill teenagers into synthetics look like child’s play.
you could argue that the development of the children with their synthetic neural matrix reflects the interaction of the ‘human’ soul with its human host.
there are all kinds of developmental differences between these children, according to their previous levels of awareness, education, motivation, etc.
as to the end score on the first episode, the lyrics to Sabbath’s ‘Mob Rule’ match the plot perfectly.
b) Norman Wisdom x 15?
Agreed, i think the Spaceballs crew was more professional!
When Morrow was searching for the empty pod, you would think as security officer he'd know exactly where each person was, right? Nope, run around like a moron checking each name plate!
Although I did like the flip from the first episode where it looked like he was the cause of the crash.
The xenomorph is all over the place, it can kill an entire squad of soldiers in seconds, but can't chase a woman down a corridor...
Overall I'm enjoying the series, but I'd almost rather they'd done an Andor, and focused less on the Alien(s) and more on the corporations and synth/UI stuff storylines, to flesh out the world behind the movies
[

Agree. It's just bad, lazy writing. They clearly wanted to have the visual of the chase sequences from Alien 3, but didn't bother finding a convincing way to give Zaveri a head start. Just smacks of "**** it, the kids won't care - they'll be gawping at their phones 50% of the time anyway."
Don't get me started on it having a wrestling match with Tyres from Spaced...
As for the crew being idiots, its a 65 year mission, everyone who goes will likely never see many friends/family again, its incredibly dangerous (and the crew are disposable), aren't they basically cannon fodder with little to live for? Who else would go but an idiot?
Ep 5 was not excellent, I sacked it off after 20 mins as it was as boring as f, only watched the rest yesterday , the remainder was better and generally I will commend the writers and production team, for sticking with the general silliness that is the alien plot where very little does or has to make sense. Some of ep 5 made no sense at all so there you go.
Is it good?, no not really, will I continue watching?, yes I will because it’s the only new bloody sci-fi horror thing out there.
I’m rooting for the eyeball to takeover the boy genius and come out on top now.

Same here. Increasingly just to see how silly they can make it. After Ep5 the answer seems to be: Very silly indeed. I get why "What happened on the spaceship" had to be later on in the series once they've introduced [most] of the alien species, so viewers would have some idea about what was going to go down, but honestly it did nothing to move the plot along and really solidly confirmed that the writers are just phoning it in. I don't know why i held out any hope; every Alien franchise movie past the original has been disappointing one way or another.
I’m just glad I didn’t watch Alien Resurrection from that clip up there ^^ … i mean the Alien just looks like a skull. That ain’t Giger designed! Its cack.

Ginger himself was pretty scathing about the creature effects in Resurrection, IICR. I'm paraphrasing here, but he basically said, "It looks like shit. I mean it literally looks like a turd.".
i mean the Alien just looks like a skull
That was the point. It was a hybrid created in a lab that killed the 'proper' xenomorph just before that clip started, then imprinted on Ripley (also a messed up clone) as its 'mother.' I said it was disturbing...
This is now hands down the geekiest thread I've ever seen on stw
Alien resurrection is, by a long way, not the worst. Bad ass Ripley, swimming aliens, mutant aliens, ticks the boxes.
This week
I don't like the way the alien menaces. I feel they are going for the alien isolation vibe, but it's not working.
Apart from that, really good episode.
Characters on the ship were one dimensional, but no more so than any other imagining.
Good the way Morrow's story was fleshed out
Morrow vs kids vs evil geniuses is the thing, the alien is a side bar
It's Fargalien for sure
I’m rooting for the eyeball to takeover the boy genius and come out on top now.
Oh,yes please 🤣
Still loving it. Some quite infuriating scenarios in the latest episode that left me thinking "but they wouldn't do that", but I'm happy to push those thoughts to one side as it's great TV.
And I love Ade Edmondson 🙂
OK too slow this episode until the last 20 minutes.
Decided to watch Alien again after it - it's been remastered on Disney in 4k. I was expecting dross.
It looks really good (on my 4k telly) as it's all 'sets' and no CGI, just a few plastic Airfix models in the space scenes.
Only recently got a 4k telly as our old Samsung finally let go. We've only Disney in 4k. This 1977 movie looks great.
Might need to revisit the original Star Wars.....
left me thinking "but they wouldn't do that"
Bearing in mind that it's still got 2 Eps to go, so there may be things still be circled back to (at this rate I can't help but think there's a season 2 coming over the horizon) the plot holes and stupid decisions made by characters are making it really hard to enjoy this. Take the negotiations scene as just one example: Morrow knows that Boy Genius sabotaged the Maginot, so Yutani knows, and yet there she is, offering billions to have her stuff back. Instead they hatch a nonsense plot to steal a face-hugger.
It's just such poor painting-by-numbers writing.
I'm not so sure about that. Yutani was trying to get its stuff back without having to admit what they were to the arbitration guy. 20 billion is likely a blip to her and, if the aliens are worth more than that, then it becomes a plain business decision.
ANYWAY... Shit's getting real now. I agree that a second series looks likely though. If they get a mostly positive reaction to it, it's a certainty.
I think they need to nuke Tracey Island from space,it's the only way to be sure.
I think the plot to steal a face hugger is the sort of thing that Morrow would do anyway (more "infiltration" than "attack"), but to distract from that, Yutani has to go through the motions of 'normal' negotiations between the two parties.
I'm just making sure my brain is off for this though. It's been a while since I saw something Alien-related that was not a bit crap, so it makes a change that something is mostly decent.
"Don't worry, the aliens are kept in secure cells within the lab, which is also heavily secured".
Child removes massive air vent cover in lab and drags facehuggered body into it....
The ...
Aside from that, fantastic, as an Alien fanboy it's just brilliant. I adore it.
... was ridiculous. This is only just avoiding falling into the "incredibly smart people doing incredibly dumb things" trap that ruined Prometheus for me
I suppose he was young and inexperienced, so can kind of be forgiven

I know, you kinda expect it now,but it still makes me shout at the screen. 🙃
It annoys me that I have never seen any sign of a risk assessment form or accident report book.
This is what happens when you let AI handle health and safety. 🤣 🤣
It annoys me that I have never seen any sign of a risk assessment form or accident report book.
lmao, some poor schmuck coming into that lab on monday morning, seeing the carnage and realising he's got a full day of filling in HS&E paperwork 🤣 ("ffs not again!")
And I love Ade Edmondson
The "I'm pregnant" storyline made me hope for someone releasing a gigantic fart as a shoutout to Vivian's pregnancy.
I suppose he was young and inexperienced, so can kind of be forgiven
Not Tootles, the real scientist who went in after him? Perhaps explained by the fact he was in an emotional state, perhaps irrational.
I did wonder why Kirsh sent Tootles in, perhaps that was the plan all along - the feed door sabotaged to force the situation. Its too obvious to think "If you use kids, you get kiddish behaviour". He was watching it all from the flying machine as an experiment observer.
... was ridiculous. This is only just avoiding falling into the "incredibly smart people doing incredibly dumb things" trap that ruined Prometheus for me ('oh look an alien snake thing, let me take off my PPE and stroke it').
Not wanting to be pedantic but didnt he look at the snake thing and it wrapped around his arm so tight it snapped his arm. This broke the suit he was wearing which allowed the snake thing to enter his suit and eventually get in his helmet and in his throat. He didnt remove anything.......
Much better this week, albeit still dumb as a bag of toes in spots: "Hey, let's just just wipe a portion of the dangerous, traumatised android's memory, mention nothing to her mates, then just let her sort of...find...out?".
Also loved the highly secure (yet strangely unstaffed and unmonitored) lab facility, with its shonky feeding hatches and capacious air ducts, featuring easily removed access panels. Writers really making it easy for themselves.
Favourites are still Ade Edmondson, Timothy Olyphant and the sheep.
Favourites are still Ade Edmondson, Timothy Olyphant and the sheep.
They are all going to leave Tracey Island on a boat together.
This will be the foundation of series2.
