Had one of these (2013) since late 2014. It was a perfect car for me at the time, I was working about 80 miles away, it is fun to drive and look fantastic (IMO) and 60 mpg+ on a run.
I handed it down to my son about 4 years ago with a full history as well as lots of early/preemptive servicing. I am pretty mechanically sympathetic and owning Alfa's before realise they (less so more recently) can be made of cheese.
Anyway forbade him from selling it and our agreement was he would hand it back to me when he got another car.
Thats the background... Calls me this morning to tell me the Turbo has failed....
Anyway I have a mate who can source and replace. Question is roughly how much does a new/refurbished turbo for one of these cost and is it a DIY job????
My son's changed his turbos, not a difficult job (Fabia) but all depends upon how it failed. My son's bearing went, and the 'fan' shattered spewing bits of metal into the engine. New engine time (which he changed himself).
Cost, you can either go for used or brand new. Used brings in possible early issues though with no history.
It depends on the car, some are quite easy to swap out.
Price, look on ECP or GSF for new, then look at breakers/ebay for used.
Thanks Fossy. He called me to say just a sudden loss of power but car continued running and stopped and restarted ok. Said there was a whistling noise just after the loss of power but that stopped after about 2 mins of driving (he was on the motorway) no further unusual noises after that.

How does he know the turbo is gone then? Sounds like the time a young lad came into work late telling us he'd 'written his car off' skidding on a roundabout. 2 days and a new suspension arm and tyre later it was back in the car park.

Yes I know. Cant be sure yet as I cant inspect the car at the moment. Could be a number of things, broken/disconnected hose etc so needs investigation. Just wondering about worst case scenario.
Tell him to limp it home and not go driving it after. My son has a habit of blowing cars up (mods them - currently running 180bhp in what was a 1.2 110bhp Fabia - had an engine swap to a 1.4).
His is currently broken after the lower engine mount snapped taking with it the clutch master cylinder (engine pivoted round). He's using our 'spare' Aygo, but after him driving it all weekend, the clutch release bearing is on the way out, so that's off the road now until the garage can do it - FFS. He breaks everything. Hope your son isn't as mechanically un-sympathetic.
A colleague had a similar vintage Alfa with the same engine and when the turbo went, she got rid due to the cost of repair.

Is this your son?

Whistling sounds like a split pipe rather than the turbo itself.
As above sounds like split pipe causing lack of boost pressure. Same symptom I had on a Golf 1.9 PD when the intercooler hose popped off.
Turns out to be a broken turbo. Replacement around £700 plus labour and other parts so not much change from a grand. Passed its MOT only last week. Shame to get rid as its in very good condition and lovely interior etc... May look around for a refurb/scrap one...
Depending what's gone you can possibly get it re-cored.
