Just ordered a dot.
Looking at some sort of skill to provide white noise and a night light to help the missus with night feeding of #2 son.
What else is useful and worth having.
I'm using 'sleep sounds' for that kind of thing. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XBXR97N
There's also a lot of that kind of track on spotify
The kids enjoy "The Magic Door" - which is like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" audiobook 🙂
I use the "BBC World Service" source for my Flash Briefing.
But aside from those the main use it gets in our house is just the built-in skills:
- playing radio via TuneIn (e.g. "Alexa, play Kerrang Radio")
- checking the local weather ("Alexa, will it rain?", "Alexa, what's the weather?")
- acting as a bluetooth speaker for Spotify Free on my phone
- random fact about the day ("Alexa, good morning")
- terrible jokes ("Alexa, tell me a joke")
- timers when cooking etc ("Alexa, set a timer for 20 minutes")
- random queries from the children ("Alexa, how much does an elephant weigh?")
Note: We don't have any paid music subscriptions (like Spotify or Amazon Music) or home automation (like Hue bulbs or plugs) - so that stuff is no good to us at the mo.
If you're in London - the bus stop and tube lines ones are pretty good.
We have a Harmony Hub, and use IFTTT so "Alexa, trigger playstation" is one of my favourites.
We also have hue, so "trigger goodnight" sets the downstairs lights off and the nightlight on.
Apologies for thread hi-jack, but what's the difference between the Echo dot and the bigger Echo - apart from the obvious price and size? Do they both do the same things? If so, why is the big one three times the price of the little one?
Big one has its own speaker in it.
Little one has a tiny speaker in it, but is really designed to be used with an external speaker.
Speaker quality is the difference. The dot has a much lower quality one so listening to music isn't great on it, the bigger Echo sounds pretty good IMO. I've got a separate speaker hooked up to the dot in my kitchen
Thanks guys, thought it was something like that

She's pretty good at mental arithmetic.
Main use is streaming radio. I also paired it with my phone and play music that way as well.
Sleep sounds is pretty good, flash light is okay.
Can't seen to find the Sonos or get nest to work....definitely early adopter stages...
I only use my Echo dot for tunein digital radio connected to my Tivoli radio line in, sometimes use it for a timer when i'm cooking but that's it. For weather advice i look outside 😉
