It's wet dreary autumn day, I'm on crutches and imobile after an op. I was going a bit stir crazy, but decided to roll with it for a delayed Sunday vibe. The log burner is lit, some chilled music is playing and Mrs Bloke has cooked some roast pork and crackling with some home made apple sauce from our bramley apple tree.  The smell and anticipation has been torture all afternoon.

In a stroke of genius she remembered a forgotten bottle of calvados we brought back from a Normandy motorcycle tour in the summer.  A generous slug has gone in the apple sauce and the gravy (and a glass) and it's awesome! An absolute revelation. The. Best. Pork. Gravy. And. Apple. Sauce. Ever.  I realise this may not be news to some of you gastronomes but having stumbled on it accidentally I'm blown away.

What amazing alcohol/food combo have you discovered accidentally?

Stella and a curry.

Edit: Sorry - this was not an accidental find.

I'm an ale drinker but have to agree that lager goes best with curry.  Kingfisher or Cobra though surely?

I quite like the quaffability of a nice cold Stella but I'd be happy to have either of those too.

For the CX season something Belgian surely?

That would work. Maybe not curry though. But I can see some Trappist beer in a chilli perhaps?  Sloe gin is another thing that goes really well with a lot of meat stews/curries

My wife makes a mean paella and recently we had no white wine in the house. However I had quite a bit of scrumpy cider I get from the orchard of a fella in Taunton (250 miles away ). I can tell you it is absolutely the dogs back wheels in paella and as an accompaniment.

I find sweetened black tea goes best with curry. Sorry. But Shiraz goes best with everything else. Even breakfast. 😜

Port and cheese after a hearty dinner…..preferably sat around a fire. (Not that we have a fire, I’ve just transported myself to a magical pub with a roaring fire serving port.

It’ll be a stinking hangover in the morning though.

When I moved to Shropshire 7 or so years ago, I was introduced to warm port. I'd always enjoyed a port but had never drunk it warm before.  A revelation  Warmed in front of the fire and turned slowly until the cork popped.  The taste of a dark winter night.
