I normally like a beer of a night - one or two small bottles, nothing much. Recently I decided to cut back simply because I was putting a bit of weight on.

So, the first night was hard - the temptation to get a bottle as I was cooking dinner was significant. Then on the second night it was quite easy then on the third night my brain was actually saying 'I don't want beer, it doesn't actually taste that nice'.

Is this normal - I have noticed it in the past when I have gone a few nights without - the longer I leave it, the less I crave it...

Having said that I could go for weeks without craving a beer. A glass of Red however, thats a different matter.

Like you I often quite enjoy a bottle or two in an evening. Nothing helps me un-wind after a days work like hearing a bottle being capped! I also felt the need to cut back a bit, mainly to ensure that I had at least 3 days straight off the beers. I've found that (cold) Becks blue is actually pretty nice. I know this doesn't really answer the OP, but I thought I'd throw it in there!

Give it a few more days and you'll be sleeping so well you'll wonder why you thought drinking was such a great thing

I used to be a couple of bottles a night man, I stopped a bit ago and pretty much gone off it now, I sleep better, wake up earlier, feel more alert and lost a few pounds and saved a few quid..
The only time I enjoy it now is after a ride, then it tastes like necter...like all things moderation is the key...

+1 Khani

Beck Blue is alright... but I would never drink a bottle or two of pop (which basically is what non-alcohol beer is) so I've knock that on the head too

Sparkling water seems to stop any evening drink cravings... Rock n Roll

I once 'gave up' alcohol for most of a year. Decided I was probably drinking too much and figured the easiest way to cut back was just not to drink.

Worked quite well, didn't lose any weight though, but the exercise I was doing seemed more effective as my bodyfat dropped and muscle mass went up. I guess thats a calories in/out thing, I was still eating the same calories but I was metabolising them into muscle where (apparently caccording to my body-building housemate) alcohol stops the process of muscle repair so exercise followed by a beer is worse than beer on it's own and i was going to the gym everyday at this point.

Since then I've stopped going out every Saturday night, and when I do go out it tends to be a good time rather than the old days where at least once month I'd be too drunk or a moody drunk so only half the nights were worth going out on. And I rarely drink in the evenings anymore, I still like beer/cider/lager/wine/long drinks but I don't use them to unwind anymore and I tend to buy more ales with lower alcohol content and fewer stonger ones as i like the tastes but don't want to be drining 6% stouts every night.

Wish I'd done it sooner TBH

Try a proper soft drink, this'll help. "It's fine to drink even if your pregnant coz it's got fruit juice in it and everyfink*"

Just drink a glass of standard Europiss like Carling or Stella, that will put you off drinking for life.

In my 20's / early 30's I used to go to the pub maybe 4 times a week and have 3 + pints each time.

Over the last 2 years or so I've cut down, 1. Having a kid and not wanting to be woken up at 2am after having a drink. 2. Ill health has meant for periods of time I havent wanted to eat or drink much at all.

For the last 6 months or so I havent really drunk at all, just because I havent wanted to. Occasionally I'll have the odd glass of wine or beer, but its rare.

Alcohol is a drug and addiction and when you dont have it you dont miss it.

'I don't want beer, it doesn't actually taste that nice'.

If you try hard enough, you can make it taste nice again...

I actually bought some Carling 'Zest' by accident (didn't realise it was low alcohol) and really liked it so I have had a couple of pints of shandy since - just a bottle of beer and some cheap supermarket diet lemonade. I quite like it.

But not had a drink since Sunday at all - and only then because I hadn't drunk a drop all weekend because I was in hospital with my kids for two nights so we decided to treat ourselves to a take out and a bottle of wine.

I have stopped for the past three months.

Lost some belly flab and like above feel like excercise is making me fitter rather than burning off the alchohol.

Am a bit grumpier though.

Decided to have a drink last couple of weekends and really don't like it the way I used to. I am now considering giving up for good.

Yeah that is about how it makes me feel. I wonder if there is a scientific explanation for this?

Am sure there is probably a bit like when you were 12,13,14,15 edit as appropriate when you started drinking you didn't like it maybe your body reverts to that state after a while.

Alcohol is not an addiction. Addiction to alcohol is an addiction.

It isn't a case of 'missing it', it is a case of the taste doesn't appeal after a few days abstinence.

To suggest I might be addicted is frankly absurd.
