Getting a record player for Christmas. Hurrah. Once I choose a speaker I'll need some records to buy.
First purchases will be Kind of Blue and some Aphex Twin, I've always wanted to listen to the records.
What next?
Astral Weeks & Saint Dominick's Preview both work perfectly on vinyl.
Hmm, good one. I'll go and have a look.
🙂
What do you like?
Herbie Hancock. Head Hunters
Public Enemy. It takes a nation of millions.
Theress two for you
First two Band albums, The Velvet Underground & Nico, after a quick rummage.
Ziggy Stardust works really well, Transformer and Berlin too.
The Wall & London Calling are more fun on vinyl.
You need the breaks to get your breath back.
🙂
Paul Simon - Hearts and Bones
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Crowded house - Woodface
Portishead - Dummy
Legend
The The - Infected
Morcheeba - Big Calm
Gotan Project - La Raviancha del tango(triptico is perfect on vinyl)
Zero 7 - Simple things
The Smiths - The queen is dead
Black Sabbath - We sold or Soul for rock and roll
To be honest this could go on for ages almost all my vinyl sounds pretty bloody good. Just make sure the condition is good, clean them first and enjoy. Chances are you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. To be quite honest 200 quid of CD player = 750 quid of TT, however a good TT and records is more enjoyable to me than digital.
Do you mean sound quality or that they're well thought out?
You can scratch the first Band album if it's sound quality, it's bloody awful.
🙂
What woodface? I have a remastered 180g version it sounds very good, athough I just like the album TBH.
Sound quality is a secondary consideration for me I just like music.
Anything before it was all mastered via digital. Roughly anything 10 years pre the record player's hipster revival.
The Who - Quadrophenia
ELO - Out of The Blue
I don't know what all the fuss is about regarding vinyl.
Most played vinyl in my collection is;
Lou Reed Transformer
AC/DC Powerage
I was going to suggest Peter Gabriel, but only the first three and So are worth bothering with on vinyl, if you can find clean s/h copies, as So is the only one to have been remastered on vinyl.
PG 4 is dreadful on vinyl, I took back four copies because of the horrible surface noise, and bought the CD, which had just been released then, ('82).
If PG 1-4 ever get released on 180gm vinyl, grab them, they're great albums.
Pounding System by Dub Syndicate
The XX seems to belong quite nicely on vinyl.
People that have decent cd collections as well: Do you duplicate your collection in vinyl or do you keep the vinyl for unique/special editions?
Back on thread, you should get DJ Shadow endtroducing
Also the Lemon jelly albums are well produced and pressed.
freewheelin bob dylan.
I recall loads of brilliant sounding vinyl. I can't think of anything that hasn't sounded better on CD though.
Whatever has been italicised.
Or...whatever you are interested in musically - vinyl vs CD is a whole different level of snobbery/oneupmanship even stw isn't ready for.
Aja, Steely Dan.
Glenn Branca - Lesson No1
Get The Blessing - Lope And Antilope
Donald Fagen Nightfly is always touted by vinylistas, but the reality is it's shite.
I get a few records each year at Christmas and the ones that I think sound good on a record player and get played the most are:
The Beatles - Revolver
Paul Simon - Graceland
The Soundtrack to Searching for Sugarman
Grizzly Bear - Shields
Ones on this years list are:
Darkside - Psychic
Real Estate - Atlas
Aside from the new ones I buy each year I have a collection of mainly instumental hip hop, funk and some dance. If you like Aphex Twin I would recommend Ambient Works on vinyl. Also as mentioned above I would suggest DJ Shadow - Endtroducing and also any of the Ninja Tune compilations.
War of the worlds
Donald Fagen Nightfly is always touted by vinylistas, but the reality is it's shite.
Fighting talk.
Art Pepper meets the Rhythm Section.
Bit of a vinyl test disc classic.
If you like Aphex,Boards Of Canada- Music Has The Right To Children or anything else they've done.
Rhythm And Sound - Burial Mix, warmest sounding vinyl around.
'Miss America' Mary Margaret O'Hara
If you can find a copy in good nick do not pass it by.
Beatles - in mono is a stunning vinyl. I'm not a big Beatles fan but put that on, close your eyes and its stunning

Really? I know you get a few crackles on vinyl but the recordings I've got on both formats definitely sound better (more realistic, more detail) on vinyl. I appreciate it's less convenient etc but there's something about it that makes me feel the musicians are there in the room with me.
Recently most vinyl comes with a free download of mp3/flac files so there's no need for buying CD as well.

Odd isn't it? I feel exactly the opposite.
these are some of the standout vinyl albums that remain etched in my mind.
Led Zep 1 &2
Pink Floyd - Dark side of the Moon & Wish You Were Here & the Wall
Jeff Wayne- War of the Worlds - (no shit)
The The -Infected (+1)
The Cure -kiss me kiss me kiss me
The Cult -Love
New Order -Substance
And then I got a cd player.... 🙂
For me the sound quality is irrelevant, too many gigs and to be frank the kind of music I listen to is not exactly audiophile friendly. But dub reggae must be played on vinyl, no other format comes close. War of the Worlds, however, doesn't sound right unless played on a chewed cassette in a draughty Ford Fiesta while doing a regular commute over the Pennines and wishing you had another bloody cassette.
Last record I got was yesterday, Fugazi's first demos, but haven't had chance to crank it up yet.
Mr Smith.
Good choice sir (bit of an art pepper fanboi here - with over 40 of his albums....)

Ah now you're talking. I remember listening to it in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night in a cold Lada estate waiting for the Manx Rally to appear over the hill. It was spooky.
Doing back to back Led Zeppelin IV testing, expect unscientific verdict soon.
OP, if you're liking Miles, then I'd recommend Bitches Brew and his Isle of Wight set. Great music, and the recordings are delightful.

In what way, exactly, is it 'shite'?
If you mean the actual recording, then you're talking bollocks; it was considered so good that the boss of B&W speakers commissioned a limited pressing run in special sleeves for retailers to demo their speakers*.
If you mean the music itself, you're still talking bollocks, because the musicianship and songwriting is faultless, you just mean you don't like it.
*My copy is one of these. Haven't played it in years, I have a DVD-A copy instead. Still an absolutely outstanding recording by a master songwriter.
Abraxas by Santana has a huge sound on vinyl as has She Sells Sanctuary on 12 inch.
First De La Soul album
Stone Roses Second Coming
Leftfield Leftism
Then look on eBay/second hand record stores for any interesting looking jazz that's going cheap
+1 Count Zero on "The Nightfly" (see my post on Page 1)
Botanybay's post is the most inflammatory thing I've ever read on STW 🙂
