I am no royalist, but I did think that public family spat was a bit too much on TV last night.
IMO
- she knew what she was getting in to
- she knew the family are a bit weird and racist (heck at one time you didnt even get to choose who you married)
- what planet are they on, feeding their 'rescued' chickens (at least she has done her bit and can sleep at night)
- I really just see that she wants her bombshell moment in history, and because no one is actually interested in her or Harry this was it.
Or am I being a little harsh?

Working in my shop, In the rural Cotswolds, I seem to have two types of customer.
A:the daily mail/express or Telegraph reader, generally over the age of 50 who all start up a conversation in the last 48hrs with "which side of the Meghan/royal fence are you on?"
And B: everyone else who just gets on with life.
For me personally, they as a couple have little or no effect on me, my family or any other part of life, why should.i have an opinion on theirs? And also, why isn't Prince Andrew still on the front pages??!! His, alleged, pedophilic actions have much more of a baring on society and the institution than a couple leaving 'the family business'.....

I think, as it turns out, that the answer to both of those questions appears to be; she didn't. Apparently it came as a surprise to her that she'd have to curtsey to the Queen, even in private. Which is, when you think about it, bloody weird and more than a bit idiotic. More power to them, I think ultimately the days of the monarchy are numbered, the less parasites hell bent of continuing a massive and unending class war so they can live in luxury, the better.

I'd just consider it as "right to reply". The press in general seemed to give them a very hard time. Even if you doubt that their story warrants 2 hours of TV time, then all you have to do is not watch it (I didn't watch it, and I've barely seen it on the news today) and just enjoy the Express, mail, Piers, that guy representing the tabloid editors on the BBC this morning, all trying to justify why their position wasn't racist.
Certainly feels like the general direction of any 'backlash' has been against parts of the media rather than Meggan and Harry.

The side by side comparisons of her treatment and Kate Middleton's treatment by the press make for disturbing reading, and it's obscenely naive - or incredibly disingenuous - to pretend there isn't a racial element to that. There are also lashings, of course, of prejudice against Americans and divorcees in the whole "she's not good enough for *our* royal family" narrative, but race is a large part of it.
The rough story seems to be that Harry brought home an actress who thought that life as a royal would be dead simple and she could continue to do things her way. They made clear that she couldn't and she became persona non grata. And it escalated from there - Harry and Meghan figured they could move and be the US franchise of the royal family, and they were cut off. As a man who's never had to work for a salary, it's got to be tough for him; and her job opportunities will be limited. So it's possible to feel a degree of sympathy for them and the extent to which the royal family and press have hung them out to dry as cover for other things, even while thinking the whole situation is an utter irrelevance in the modern world.

I guess its the sign of the times. It goes on all the time in the media with z-list celebs. My kids know all the ins and outs of various people I've never heard of who all look the same and seem to have the same lives. Just let them crack on. Its sad alot of people are often more interested and attentive to the lives of media celebs than their own and that of their family. I guess we've been far too interested in the royal family for too long but I guess we pay for them so at least in this case we're entitled.

To be fair to him, he served in the Marines in Afganistan without anyone knowing until the press outed him and it became a liability.
They then said they were leaving, were told there would be no support, and they said they were leaving anyway because that wasn't the point.
I know there are always two sides to the story and the truth might bear little or no resemblance to one, the other or either. But your's does sound like the version peddled by the royal press secretary and the Daily Express, so I think it's wrong to then condemn them for giving an interview that's not fitting in with that narrative.

"Waitey Katey", "Doors to Manual" etc. So she's not had a particularly easy time of it either. Ditto Camilla. Ditto Edward's wife, or Fergie. Etc.
Course, it shouldn't happen for any of them (and I'm not saying it's not worse for DoS). Unfortunately - as mentioned - it's a Heat style thing. They are - for good or bad - celebrities now. And celebrity sells. The royals are just the UK equivalent of Keeping up with the Kardashians or whatever. The Kardashians have to be dramatic to keep relevant (and keep money coming in). The royals do not; civil list etc. The Sussexes will now have to keep in the news to keep the money coming in; this may be the first of many exclusives.
Get rid of all salacious gossip over people you don't know (royal or not), and the world is a better place. But anyone watching it, or buying a paper over it is complicit in it.

The thing for me is, as superbly pointed out in that Irish Times piece, the royals do provide a bit of a Rorschach test of who we are/want to be as a society.
And yes I remember Kate getting stick, but this is showing the hierarchy of our society pretty clearly: rich white aristocratic people are at the top, then significantly below them it's less rich white people with more ordinary names, then significantly below them rich black and brown people.

Harry was an Army Captain for a number of years, flew combat missions as lead pilot in Apache's and only left Afgan after being outed by the tabloids. Hundreds of our services knew he was out there and alongside him and didn't out him because he flew into danger with them. Think that counts as a job.
They are still in high risk and have to pay for their own security, that won't be cheap so if they monetise this story then fine.

So you're judging someone based upon partial information? Also she was having a pop at the institution behind the family 'the firm', not specific family members. They even went into detail about how it's not the Queen they have an issue with, and have had zoom chats with her and young archie.
'The firm' are the controllers of the money, security, daily schedules, accommodation, leaks to the press etc.
The family are far from blameless, but you may have been better served watching the whole thing

There's some massive hypocrisy at play - it's been picked up in an earlier comment, but when I was severely depressed and posted a thread on STW about it, there were supportive comments from people on this thread who are being dismissive and derogatory of the couple.

Private Eye's issue afterwards was magnificent. A slightly dodgy cover but the main thing was reprinting what all the major papers were saying before they knew she was dead and what they said immediately after they knew plus the following days papers.

I find the pure bile against MM remarkable - it seems clear to me that members of the royal household have been briefing against her to their press sources from the outset. It was getting to the point where her and Kate would do exactly the same thing, Kate would get glowing press and Meghan would be slated.
The racist comment is unsurprising, and putting 2+2 together about which direction it came from is not hard, given the nature of the 'clarification' that was put out and other information from the interview.
I just can't fathom the treatment they have had from the royals and the press. I can only assume that their is some real animosity between Meghan and Kate, and of course the royal household will always back the future queen.

I've done them a disservice - they weren't paid for the interview. Oprah's production company Harpo own the rights to the interview and have licensed it to CBS, ITV et al. They might have a backend deal, but that bit isn't clear and it sounds like that kind of deal isn't common for these big interviews
Harry and Megan have two deals in place, one with Spotify another with Netflix, in both cases to produce content around social issues and mental health.

It's funny, I've had a few conversations with people in the last 24 hrs which start with "I'm not a royalist but..." and then also go on to say they haven't watched it and criticise them for "publicity seeking" when they "ran away to get privacy".
I can imagine the same people starting a conversation with "I'm not a racist but... what did she expect joining OUR royal family".
To be honest the most disturbing thing I heard was that her passport and car keys were taken away from her. That's plain weird. In any other setting, we'd prosecute people for trying to exert that sort of control over someone else.
This country is long overdue a long hard look at its entire "constitutional basis" and if this forces those questions I think they'll have done far more good for the UK that Her Majesty has.
