Air purifier or dehumidifier?

Seems like a daft question but wwstwd?

Every time I go away be it for a day or weeks after a few hours in the house I get significant allergies. I have an allergy to dust, cat dander and work it seems. I take becanase nasel sprays and anti histamine at least once a day otherwise I end up choking on my own mucus.

I clean the house at least one a week. Generally hoovering twice a week and floors are 50/50 hard flooring to help with this.

So Im hoping an air purifier will help? It's worth a try at least. Thing is should I get a dehumidifier with a built in filter ( makes sense financially as the existing dehumidifier is about 25 years old. Or is a dedicated air purifier significantly better? They both just appear to pull air over a filter so I'm thinking the dehumidifier makes more sense?

Any thoughts?

We've an old (1850s ish) cottage and it's always dusty.  I and #1 daughter both have asthma, and house dust (dust mites and dust mite 'dust')  is one of the confirmed allergens/ triggers for me.

I'm similarly better w.r.t. asthma when away / start getting it more when we get back home.  Partly as I think land-locked Derbyshire has higher pollen and pollutant levels than say seaside towns.

Air purifier. We got 2 about a year ago.  One after #1 daughter had a really bad asthma attack a few days after returning feom Uni (a seaside uni town and modern accom).

Relatively big ones (AEG AX9 - about 18 inch diameter and 2 1/2 foot high) and totally anecdotally they do seem to help. The data on the graphs certainly suggest they are doing something and I do see the outsides coated in dust too (must be larger particles) that I have to hoover off occasionally.

Also when cleaning / dusting the house or disturbing lots of stuff, I find wearing a respirator mask really helps.  (May look like a fetishism and weird, but so what if I can still breathe !)
