Has anyone done this themselves? Is it worth the expense of buying the kit or just pay a garage?

I have two cars so it might be worth the outlay to buy the kit but I wonder if it is

You have to be a licensed operator for refrigeration gas removal due to it being a restricted / hazardous compound.

And the kit required looks mighty expensive.

Dont bother.

Pay a garage - tend to get mine done every 18 months or so as I like it nice and cold. Cheap as chips really.

I take mine to my local independent - hardly more than buying a kit and I get to keep clean hands and have an extra hour to myself of a weekend.

Are you going to leak test it first and repair if necessary or just re gas and see what happens?

Helped a mate do it with the DIY kit, used two kits and it wasn't great and ended up costing more than a recharge.

Take it to a garage, ask if the do a free leak test.

I've got a kit, can't remember what it cost but was less than a re-charge at the garage.

Plug it in, check the temperature and pressure each spring, usually only takes a few presses of the button to get it back upto normal.

Obviously it will only top up for a very slow leak past the compressor seals, if it's empty then it'll be empty again before long.

Local specialist rather than KwikFit etc - I had mine done by a chain first who said they leak tested it but there was no real change afterwards. Local fella came out and found all the tell tale marks where their test had found leaks but they'd not actually fixed them, then he also found a worn part in the compressor - was super frosty after that.

Local garage charged me £60 to check for leaks and issues before charging within the last 6 weeks, I think that's quite reasonably priced

I got a mobile team to come out and re-gas mine on the drive... easy enough!

When kwik fit did mine they tested it first free of charge too, which was lucky as it had a compressor fault

I got a groupon voucher or something like that for a local place, that also did "money back if it doesn't improve", so was also an effective test, cost £30.

Any way of doing a DIY leak test? I'm thinking of a track pump-style pressurise and leave it a while to see what happens?
