Can't see a thread up yet - I'm not a full on Star Wars nerd but I've enjoyed most of the Disney+ spin offs.

First episode shaping up nicely in the new slow burning style.

Apart from the lightsabre fizzle and the spaceships, I found the cgi a bit weak. The plot started nicely. It was always going to be hard bringing anime characters to life. I hope Zeb comes back - his appearance in the Mandalorian was all too brief. There is really no need to reference every scene from Lucas' originals. And don't get me started on the length of Ahsoka's leku.

The Guardian review isn’t great, which is a bit of a concern.

Wife (who has no interest in Star Wars) was meant to be out tonight but that’s been cancelled so going to have to wait until tomorrow to find out…

Yeah, I read that review too, yet it's in the 'seven best shows this week' feature in the same paper 😀

Then I read the Telegraph's review and cheered myself up link

Hopefully it'll be more Andor and less Mandalorian 😉

BBC reporting very mixed reviews, which was how I realised it was out. I've never seen any of the animated series so don't really know the characters and no preconceptions - just want 45 minutes of escapism at a time.

If you know your Stars Wars it's loaded with stuff, I thought it was pretty good, more Mandolorian than Andor but I'm good with that.

I’m feeling a bit of Star Wars fatigue really. The last series of Mandalorian was pretty average.

Will probably try this at some point. The guardian review is a bit harsh, especially given they have reviewed based on 2 episodes.

Andor is great but Star Wars should be something you can watch with your young kids. All three series of Mando and Ashoka tick that box. Between them I think they’re the best Star Wars has to offer since Clone Wars and Rebels. The prequel and sequel films were a bit shit.

Would be good if they do more stuff like Andor and Rogue one too. A mix of more slower, serious stuff and pew! pew! Force and lightsabers is a good balance

Well my son and I enjoyed the first two episodes a lot. He's grown up with the Clone Wars and Rebels though, and having that background means we're already invested in the characters.

Sabine Wren has been a favourite in this household for years, and Ahsoka before her.

Guardian review was by someone who probably sees the animations as beneath them, when Clone Wars series probably has some of the best Star Wars stories to date.

+1 to @FunkmasterP

This feels like Rebels series 5.

I liked it, I had watched all the animated stuff during the pandemic so most of the references made sense to me.

It's more like Star Wars for millennials who grew up with the cartoons, It's not bad (IMO).

The films have been like this for decades withnthe exception of Rogue One, but the animated stories have been telling Star Wars stories well for decades also. Dave Filoni has shaped and curated Star Wars in a masterly fashion now for a while, glad to see him directing live action but his animated stuff truly widened the star wars galaxies.

Trying not to come across as a fan boy, must remember not to have these conversations IRL 😀

A lot of green screen filming, excessive colouring, and ridiculously clean surroundings.

It was like a live comic book.

The dark side's Padawan is hot, though!

They have a really clever LED screen "virtual set" that literally runs on the Unreal game engine, that they're obviously very much in love with, but which nobody seems completely sure how to use yet. It works great a lot of the time- like, there's a load of stuff in the Mandalorian especially that you'd think is an oldschool fully built set and it turns out to be the screen + some fairly basic postprocessing- but every so often you get something really odd looking (which I think is partly deliberate, Book of Boba Fett has loads of odd moments that seem like they might be intentional).

So I watched the first two episodes and it's. not. too. bad.

Certainly not as bad as Boba Fett or Mandalorian, but some of the acting is a bit staged and wooden, and the plot and story lines don't really run smoothly, but the Star Wars universe has been recreated well with enough depth.

The 'baddies' are a bit predictable, their background and story is now so old its as ancient as the Jedi order itself.

I was a bit concerned it was going to be a single stage set like Boba Fett, but its closer to Andor in that respect with a good number of larger sets being used.

Not as good as Andor, but not far off it.

The dark side’s Padawan is hot, though!

Concurs.

I really enjoyed it, had a good cartoony feel to fit into rebels. I like the way that Andoor, Mando, Obi Wan and this all feel a bit different yet they all join up.

Not sure about the whole force sensitive Sabine thing but happy to see what happens.

I thought episode 3 was great, but short though...

I do wonder how much I like it because it's a Rebels sequel though. I wonder what those who have not seen Rebels think.

I'm really enjoying it, but agree, if each episode is going to get 10mins shorter, the finale will be about 30s long...

Mrs V hasn't seen Rebels and is enjoying it.

I'm assuming there'll be a Zeb cameo at some point (Gov won't send support, but a New Republic fighter could decide to come along anyway).  I'm also holding out for a Kanan force ghost, but that might be expecting too much...

Is it OK if I just quite enjoyed it without really understanding any of these references?

I do notice the obvious "fan service" bits in these Star Wars shows, and can feel the director saying "ooh look, here's that thing you like" - but I very rarely get them.

It is what it is though and they do a decent job of making stuff that appeals to the geeks and the general viewer.

We’re split here. I’m loving it. Family haven’t seen Rebels and are asking why should they care about the characters we haven’t yet seen but everyone is talking about…

Still, it’s properly fun… Ashoka fighting and floating outside the ship was just silly… smiling just thinking about it. Brain out smiles on…

Very much so. Yawning plot holes shouldn't stop us enjoying the franchise at this point. Nor should I go on the Lego website and buy all of the starfighters that I didn't know about until now.

We watched the first few. Really annoying how stupid the combat sequences are. I know people want to see tension and spaceships whizzing about, but whoever planned this out put absolutely zero thought into it which really does irritate and frustrate me. It's just really lazy. I know it's obviously not hard sci-fi but put use your bloody imagination and try and think how a space battle would actually go not just re-hashing WW2 plane sequences.

I've not been able to get into any Star Wars after the horrific final 3 movies, i have tried with the mandolorian, but it's just a bit off, the spin offs are worse, Andor was decent, but it was a bit hit and miss as well, i'll give this one a try, but i do feel these shows are being less aimed at the older Star Wars fan, and when you strip away the SW bit, they're fairly bland sci-fi series, there's just a lot better out there just now and in the past to watch.

I’ve not been able to get into any Star Wars after the horrific final 3 movies

then this pile of unremittingly boring POS isn't going to change that. I'm not one for SW bashing as a general rule, it is what it is, but no TV should be dull when you've got this universe to work with, and this is turgid. Everyone speaks their lines like it's most portentous thing ever "I'm going to the loo, now" as if you're ordering troops to their deaths...yeah, not working. But the most unforgivable turd is the "don't say it; show it" rule of TV which they're breaking constantly, we're four eps in now,  half way through. I know what's going to happen in the next four, (they keep telling us)  haven't seen either the major baddy or the missing member of the gang.

It's not as bad as the Book of Fett, but only just.

Futurama isn't too great either.

They seemed to have killed off the good sci-fi like Raised by Wolves and The Peripheral. I think the next series of Severance is happening at least.

try and think how a space battle would actually go not just re-hashing WW2 plane sequences

You do know the original Star Wars had shot for shot reproduction of a WW2 film plane sequences.

It's a character trait that the character has been doing for about 15 years.

I am really enjoying and have no idea whats going to happen next. I mean we know the baddies are looking for Thrawn and Ahsoka is trying to stop them whilst Sabine and Hera want to find Ezra but how any of this will happen next is anyone's guess.

I would suggest if you really don't like it just don't watch it. Problem solved, I mean I would suggest ignoring threads talking about it too, but, you know, a good moan is fine if that's what makes you happy.

Wait. A writer can't be bothered to make an effort and somehow it's my fault for not going for sub standard stuff.

I like a lot of TV shows. This one tbh is ok, all these Star Wars ones look great and at times I am watching for the visuals. But they could easily do better IMO.

I've bit watched the Clone Wars or Rebels. They both coincided with fatherhood, so no time to watch much TV (unless I stopped cycling).

What bits of CWs or Rebels should one watch to get up to speed, or is it all or nothing?

I am not sure what your problem is tbh. I mean I'm sure WWII dog fights and battles would be different if the Lancaster bomber had a jedi with a light sabre on the top of it.

Well, sending her into the tail gunner pod. Why would that not be automatic? Why didn't we have spaceship weaponry like missile swarms with beam laser countermeasures and such.

I also have a problem with a plot point in the last one - are we doing spoilers here?

Ive stayed away from all this until ive caught up . Geek level is high here, from Rebels  and the Clone wars .  As much as Andor was ment to show the dirt and grit of the SW universe  then the magic of SW is shown in Ahsoka.

So many easter eggs and flashbacks from  the CW and Rebels, I think its brilliant. Better than  dare I say  the Mandalorian, and far better than the Book of BF .

I am interested to know the correlation between liking the Ahsoka series having watched Clone Wars and Rebels.

Everyone in our house is disappointed that characters we know and love have become cartoonish cutouts of their anime personas. Also clever plotting and story arcs seem to have been dispensed with.

The first Mandalorian series was like comic books brought to life, Ahsoka seems like live action represented in a comicbook style.

Book of BF was a shambolic affront to story telling

No-one is arguing with that one, are they? I mean, what could go wrong with the idea of a famous intergalactic bounty hunter and badass getting involved in town council meetings?

BoBF was so bad, it even made Mandalorian bad by association. Loved Andor and first couple of series of Mandalorian, didn't mind Obi Wan.

Do I need to watch all the Clone Wars/Rebels stuff to make Ahsoka worthwhile?

Last 3 or so episodes of Rebels would help.

I am loving Ahsoka.

Really want to see what happens with Balon, what's he up to? Does Ahsoka know the stories, is the the one the droid told her? Shame the actor has died, wonder if they will recast?

Loved the horse/wolf/dog thingy 😄😄😄

For some reasons Sabine's journey in that episode reminded me of Monkey and that can only be good right?
