It had been whining for quite a while but failed tonight. Limped home amid white smoke when idling; whining replaced with grumbling mechanical noise; power virtually gone.
99% certain its the turbo itself. Probably bearings collapsed I guess.
Seen new units @£780 on ebay but looking for refurb if possible. Can anyone recommend anywhere? (Ideally Lancs area)

Don't drive it again! There's a risk if the turbo disintegrates bits end up in the engine and lunch the whole thing. It's rare on these but possible.
Personally I'd go with new, my old man got a refurb one when his 5 series diesel's went and it lasted 6 months and 10k before it needed doing again.
This ^^ If you have one, uou might be looking at a new catalytic converter too, which isn't cheap.

What Steveh said but as far as new/reconditioned/scrappy it depends on how long you keep the car for
head down your local scrappys and pull one out, you will need to do the work your self (most of the time) estimated guess from previous experience £150. BUT there is no warranty!!

Strange, when my turbo blew, Peugeot, my mechanic said it would be OK to drive the 80km to the garage.
Mucho expensivo... I know how you feel. First one blew at the end of Sept last year and the second a month later. 😥

54 plate with 97k on the clock, so will probably keep it if no other damage done.
I suppose I've not done too badly to have only spend money on service consumables for the past 4 years and 60k.
If you think you'll keep it long term then I'd get new. If you're just going to fix it and get shut then scrappy is the cheapest way. You could take a punt on a scrappy one that might last 5 or 50k and risk having to do it again. I wouldn't bother with a refurb though they tend to not be sufficiently cheaper to be worth the extra risk.

Its one reason i went for a boggo petrol 1.8 54 plate. Everyone shakes their head, but at least i know less likely to have engine trouble and its now with 114k up.

My Turbo went last year on my Nissan primera dci .... only 53k on the clock .... cost me £1460 for replacement !
Mine went on my 51 plate Saab 9-3 TiD (145K miles) 4 months ago - such spectacular smoke that I brought the whole A14 to a halt, and then 3 police cars and an ambulance arrived, thinking the car had caught fire!
I feared the worst in terms of cost, but £700 fitted did the job. Now, 4 months later, the car's going better than ever and has covered another 9K miles.
One tip - after the turbo change, don't do the full milage cycle before changing the oil again. Incase bits have started to go into the engine and fuel system from the old turbo, change the oil again after about 6K miles.

Mine had a new one at around 100k when it was a lease vehicle. Still goes fine at 170k, no idea to what extent it was blown though.
Myself, I'd be happy enough with a recon', basically a remanufactured item.
The turbo went on my Renault Master van and It was undrivable as it blew all the engine oil through the exhaust
Used to be a good forum for these cars, fordmondeo.org.uk, but its merged with some other Ford forum these days. We have a 52' with 160k on the clock. Its worth peanuts, but if the turbo went I'd replace because the rest of the car is fine, & at least I'd know it was one part that had been done. My brother in law did his DMF late last year, was £700. 😐

The turbo went on mine a couple of years back whilst overtaking. Filled the Ogwen Valley with white smoke and spat its innards all over the road, oil included. Managed 300 yards coasting and no more.
Cost £900 to fix as they wouldn't take the old turbo to recon as there wasn't much of it left. Being variable-vane turbos, they're pricey. Sadly, the car was never really the same again, kept having engine management issues and had to take it to Ford as even my local garage admitted defeat. Flogged it on EBay straight after.
Good luck, but it may be worth just getting it to move again and flogging it. Alternatively, you may never hear another peep out of it. It's a car - who knows!
FWIW, a mate had a Pug 407 with broadly the same engine (Pug and Ford co-developed the HDI/TDCI) - his ate 4 turbos in quick succession...
