Some fantastic photos and some faces that tell a story. It's images like this that should make people think before advocating sending troops into wars with no end game.
Thanks OP, yes great photos
@Ravey I agree totally. On my TA Destination-X trip was a very bright young army officer about to go to Afgan for the first time. We should indeed think very carefully about such deployments
Yep how the yanks go to war! Rumour has it that their soldiers are given sufficient ammo and equipment too.
I could tell you a few tales about the "hygiene" standards in some of those food outlets! We had TGI Fridays at Kandahar - that was sponsored by the NAAFI so it's not just the Yanks who know how to do it.

Didn't that get shut down? Or perhaps it was Tim Hortons...
I never got chance to go anyway; i worked nights for the whole time i was there!
Wow. fantastic photos. Thanks for sharing that OP
Awesome. Thanks JJ.
Tim Horton went when the Canadians left. TGI's did briefly get closed down due to a mouse infestation! Pizza Hut was closed down as they were sieving the weevils out of the flour before they made the pizzas.
If you look at the photos on the second link - the one of the bus stop by the bunker - the bus route map stuck on the post is one of my drawings!

I'd be more worried about the Thursdays than the Fridays 😉
That group photo is intense. Great photos.
His pictures of dusty war-weary soldiers were a long way from the usual sanitised upbeat images preferred by the media minders at the Ministry of Defence.
I met Danfung Denis who's and american war photographer turned film maker (his film Hell and Back Again is superb, every frame of film could be an iconic war photo). He talked about the difference between the american and UK approaches to the media in war zones. When you look at these photos, as interesting as the photos are you can tell the photographer is on a short leash.
If you were an american photographer filming or photographing american troops you get a briefing where you're advised not to give away current positions or advanced plans.... and thats it. You can wander off into afganistan, meet, join, travel, photograph any individual or group of soldiers - go out on patrol with them, go back to base with them, be ambushed with them. Meet another group of soldiers and follow them. From that initial briefing onwards the US army just trusts you - they don't ask to see anything you've photographed or filmed and they don't have to approve anything you publish or broadcast.
Incredible images.
Worth following on with this link - http://www.helmandreturn.com/
I think I'll and go visit a couple of the billboards.
