So after 4 years, my Galaxy S7 is starting to give up the ghost and on lookout for a replacement. Since I haven't looked at phones for 4 years, and they all seem to look the same these days, what ones are the best for a mid range, maybe £400-800 budget?

My requirements for an android phone are quite short; needs a decent battery, waterproof and decent storage (or expandable). Not too fussed about the camera.

So, just looking for a bit of general advice as the £200 phones look the same as the £1200 ones these days and it's getting a bit confusing. TIA

The Pixel 4a keeps getting put back. Was originally May release, then June....now there is rumours it will be announced in a couple of weeks but not released until October. If you can hang on until then, it would probably be worth a look.
That's what I'm currently holding out for. The only slight fly in the ointment is that my current phone has a 5000mAh battery and lasts for a couple of days easily. The 4a gets a much smaller battery.

If you can't wait, then the 3a might be worth a look.

If you look on youtube there are tons of good round-up reviews of Android phones. It's hard to know what to look at though as there's so much choice.

Moto G8 Plus and a ziplock bag for additional waterproofing.

I had an S7 edge, replaced it with a Huawei. Avoided Huawei for the next phone, but only because of the Google hassles, the phone itself was great. I'm back with Samsung and an A71. If you're S7 has been good then just get another Samsung. The new One UI is good and a lot less bloaty than before. The A series aren't waterproof however but your budget would stretch to an S which probably would be.

Huawei P Smart was great, until I swam with it in March. The Motorola G7 that replaced it has been a disappointment.
I'm now looking for a good deal on another Huawei phone, P30 probably.

It's the waterproofing you'll pay for.

https://www.tomsguide.com/uk/best-picks/best-waterproof-and-water-resistant-phones

I've had good results with OnePlus. Their phones have always been described as 'water-resistant', but they say they don't pay the fee for IP ratings. Selling off the 7T Pro cheap at the mo... https://www.oneplus.com/uk/7t-pro?from=head or https://www.johnlewis.com/oneplus-7t-pro-smartphone-android-6-67-inch-sim-free-8gb-ram-256gb-haze-blue/p4779139.

What about a Samsung S10? That's IP68 and about £650.

I'm in the same boat, current Huawei Mate 9 is nearly 4 years old now and it's on it's way out. Been a great phone but the lack of Google Play in the future is a no go for me.

I keep looking at the Google Pixel 4XL but that is a lot of cash to drop.

Friend of mine has just bought an S10 512gb from 4gadgets for £430
He selected pristine grade and it was exactly that. Not a mark on it.

Cheers for the responses so far. Have been doing a bit of homework on the phones. Current contenders are the new Oneplus 8 or a Galaxy S10.

Currently leaning towards the Oneplus as the S10 doesn't have 5G, which I thought might be better for futureproofing, as I generally run phones until they break.

@skankin_giant

Huawei phones with the google play connection won't lose it. Hence Huawei skirting the rules by releasing improved spec versions of older models changing as much as they can while still being able to claim it's an existing model so they can include google play.

If you expect a full charge to last at least a day...swerve anything pixel.

Had one of the originals now on a 3.

Great phones, abysmal battery life.

Just got a Pixel 3a to replace a dying S7. Very happy with it.
Love the fact it’s not inundated with bloatware like the Samsungs.
Nice to use, not too massive, charges quick, battery lasts almost 2days.

Had a Lenovo P2 and just replaced it with a pixel 3a. The camera is an improvement but I'm already annoyed by the battery life.

I'd go for something with a 5000 mAh battery if I was buying again.

It's not waterproof though. I have one too, I like it.

I've just bought a Samsung XCover Pro to replace my old Note 3 because the GPS was degrading as was the call quality. I tend to keep phones for a long time so refuse to buy a phone without a replaceable battery. Also need replaceable battery as I'm often out in remote areas doing fieldwork away from charging so always need to carry a spare. So far I'm very pleased - good battery life, good GPS, IP68, drop tested to 1.5m, decent size screen, reasonable camera etc etc. Only issue is that it is so new, I can't get a spare battery yet.

Since the coronavirus has been about I give my OnePlus 6T a wash with soap and rinse it under the tap when I get home from work, it's still ok.

There's another, cheaper (<£500?) OnePlus due in about a week too so might be worth seeing what that's like. Good point about 5G though if you plan to keep it for years. Nord is said to be 5G too.

I'll be needing to pick brains too:

My Samsung A8 Dual Sim has been amazing for the last 30 months. At £330 inc case and MicroSD it has been the best tech purchase I've made....

But all good things come to an end and I reckon I'll need to upgrade primarily for memory reasons; apps can't go on my SD card.

What android phone has dual sim AND expandable memory >256Gb internal) and is waterproof, other than my A8?!

In the spirit of "suggest what you own" I've had a Pixel 2XL for about two years now, bought second hand from Laptops Direct, and it's still going strong.

Easily get a full day of relatively heavy use on a charge. Water resistant rather than proof, but I've never had a problem. I think this year is the last that it gets an Android update, to 11(?), but it'll take a year or so before most other Android phones catch up with that. They're currently ridiculously cheap on Laptopsdirect.

In a year or so I'll probably switch to the 4XL.

I've got an S7 (fantastic) and the like for like replacement looks like being the S10e.

- same dimensions as an S7 (bigger screen however) which is the right size for me (not massive)
- NO edge screen (again like my S7) so more durable than other top end Samsungs.
- waterproof
- latest version of android and they are great at updating
- Samsung again so should link the same way with any other stuff you have.

This, I can't fault my S10e, and its so much better without the edge.

Wow - I held off buying one a 3a in Jan because of the forthcoming 4a
