Just looking for some advice on how to tackle an unexpected invoice from ebay...

I sold a horse trailer on ebay, expecting to pay between £10 and £14.99 to list the item and a £35 max final value fee.  This is the ebay motors fees. I also had to pay £112 for Paypal fees but thats fine as I had accounted for that when accepting the buyers offer as they wanted to use Paypal and not cash.

However, my invoice just came through and they have charged the selling fees at £250, as a normal item. I've had a little dig around and there is a trailer category within Ebay Motors, I can even mark it as a horsebox!  However, when you type in your listing title, eBay suggests the category, and recommended to place it in the Equestrian > Horse boxes and Trailers category.

Just to confuse matters further, when you view listings, its not clear whether you are selling within ebay motors (apart from the category) as the branding doesn't change, just the search options look a little different.  If this is just down to a category/listing issue, thats pretty annoying as no one searches by category anyway, I could stick it in Stamp Collecting and it would still come up with the right search terms.

The person who bought my trailer is selling her horsebox, and she has made the same mistake, she has listed in the Equestrian section rather than ebay motors.

I'd like to think I can get the fee's corrected, but a 'keep it simple' approach is almost certainly the way to go with contacting ebay!  Any advice?

Success! In the end they have refunded my final value fee in full!

I had to be quite persistent but remained calm and polite with the operator as I could tell that he was quite assertive and I needed to not be 'that' difficult customer!  They wouldn't accept my argument that there was a valid category on ebay motors, and just said my account would be suspended if I had listed it there.  They based that assumption on the fact that when they searched for similar items, other poor suckers had also followed ebays listing recommendation and placed their items in sporting goods.  However, after the call I looked myself, and there are also loads of horse trailers in the ebay motors trailer category!

The refund did not turn up as promised, but after a second call they processed it, so my fees for the month are a much more reasonable £37 rather than £287!!!

I used the 'call me' option on ebay so the calls didn't cost me anything either!

Thanks guys
