Evening.

I’m after some advice from the STW collective.

6yr ‘Fish’ is starting to do more and more work in school using iPads.

Aside from for work purposes we’re not really a ‘computery’ house (I don’t have games consoles, etc) so I don’t want him to be at a disadvantage, however I also don’t really want him using my work iPad.

So, what should I get? Kindle Fire? Look for a cheap iPad? Something else?

It won’t need to do a lot but likewise I don’t really want to be buying another in 12months because it’s too basic.

Thanks in advance.

Richie

My daughter had an iPad and a kindle fire. The kindle didn't see much use and after a couple of weeks it's not seen any. You can have it if you like.

Wether you're an Apple hater or not, there is no denying the iPad is a great bit of kit. So good that I'm lobbying my IT team at work to enable us to ditch laptops altogether and go solely iPad. They can do almost everything I normally do for work (email, presentations, word, excel) so if only we could access our CRM system and access our GLAN drives then the laptop would be redundant and I'd be glad not to be lugging that dead weight around with me. It's only our internal IT policy that is preventing those remaining things, nothing technical, so hopeful we can become laptop-less.

Plenty of decent android tablets out there for a lot less when it hits the floor...still no idea what this samsung a10 doesn't do that an iPad does. Good battery all the aps you need and a price that can be replaced. Also has user modes so you can lock down one for the kids and still manage it.

apparently Android tabs are on the way out. Google are moving towards 2in1 Chromebooks that run Android apps.  See here

I've just got one of these and it's excellent. For some reason John Lewis are selling the M7 version for the same price as the M3 one (and about £300 cheaper than elsewhere...)

Is he 6 or yr6?

If the latter then a chromebook is way to go. They are mandatory at my daughters school from yr7 and will probably be in all secondary schools in a year or two.

Thanks Guys.

Despite Wobbliscotts kind offer its looking like an ipad might be the way to go. I'm far from a lover of Apple bu I use an ipad and iphone every day, plus its the tablet of choice at the school so it makes sense.

Appreciate the help though and especially the offer of the Kindle Wobbli, thank you very much.

Cheers
