Hi all,
Possibly the wrong place to ask, as I'm sure its the kind of thing many would want but few do.
Im a builder/carpenter and fear work may soon dry up, also I'm getting a bit fed up with uninteresting jobs. So time for a change...
Anyone know of anything involving adventure and travel, worth looking into?
I used to work in the outdoor industry, climbing, mountaineering etc but also burnt out on that, poor money and limited quality work where i live. I am pretty open minded on what to do, just has to pay a half decent wage.
We are always talking about moving somewhere else for a change so location isn't too much of a worry.
The other alternative is to go back to uni and do a QS degree to give myself a better chance of finding project management work (bit boring though). I need some excitement and adventure in my working life again.
Any ideas?
probably not....
cheers
I'm in a similar position.
Work is available as people love to tell you 'there's work out there' but as I'm sure you know supply is driving wages to pitiful levels.
Put my dog of 11 years to sleep this time last week. He was my only responsibility.
Have a little in savings just can't seem to get my head in the right place and my imagination working at the moment.
Unless you can get a job that relies on skills you have already, most others will require some kind of qualifications or experience (anything that doesn't will be low paid). I was in a similar position a few months ago when I realised this...I'm now at uni!
Fund Manager in Cayman Islands.
Nice weather, good hours and enough cash for hookers, cocaine and all the adventure you shake a rolled up $50 note at.
It is a tricky move to make, thats for sure. Im guessing others are in the same position as me aswell, 35yrs old, mortgage and used to earning decent money (for my lifestyle anyway)
Going back to uni is the last thing i want to do really, 3 yrs of being truly skint and then leaving with a massive debt, I've only just paid off my last student loan!
There has to be jobs out there that require a particular type of person, rather than a particular degree!
Hooja I studied by distance learning for a QS degree with CEM in Reading

It means you can still work FT and pay the bills at the same time. The final year is hard going but manageable. Only problem is there aren't any decent paid QS jobs in my area currently.
cheers blindmelon, I had thought about distance learning but not really looked into it, i guess i should!
I was always of the impression that QS was a foot in the door for various jobs, building control, architectural consultant, project manager etc.
I have been considering going down that route for project management, ideally so i can remain self employed. i guess you have looked into these options though. Best of luck.
