Can't see a thread running, we need to keep these traditions going....

After a couple of years of beer advent calendars, this year I'm enjoying the Pact Ground Coffee one. Not sure I quite get all the wordy bollocks about taste and mouth feel, but some lovely smelling and tasting coffee so far.

And more socially acceptable to start the day than a can of beer....

A colleague has "Yuletide ****s".

So far we've had Richard Branson, Calvin Robinson, Dan Wootton and so on.

Yesterday was Liz Truss.

Usually have a gin one but not got one this year. Nearly bought the Wera one in the electric wholesalers yesterday for Kevin as they were being sold off. May call in today and pick one up

Always buy our daughters one so this year the eldest has got the usual Maltesers one. Youngest is in New Zealand so told her to go out and buy one to save on postage. Cant fault her choice

I bought a wooden box nativity one years ago. Each door has a figure for the nativity scene, plus space for a few chocolates.

I have a felt one with hand written cards in each pocket. They are insults usually with a Christmas theme. My wife and daughter update a few of them each year.

My personal favourites so far are

2nd - You're an old slut on junk

4th - you have a face like a pair of tits (not sure if it was a Christmas Father Ted)

We have a Hey Duggee one with a wee book behind every door. Get a Duggee Hug from the kids at the end of every book so it's by far my favourite calendar we've had.

Dairy Milk because it's the one that gave me the most chocolate per pound spent. Still insanely expensive when compared to a bar of chocolate though (see easter eggs for another example).

The past two years I had the Tiny Rebel one but they've not done on this year, shame really as it was rather good.

I got the Flying Tiger DIY Projects one for the OH, she likes her craft so it's 24 Christmas decorations, mostly just pipe cleaners and pom-poms but more fun than the average half a square of chocolate.

I've got a Guardians of the Galaxy Lego one (last year's stock).

Bought MsBeej a "Advent for Change" charity one, where most of the price is donated across 24 different charities and each window covers one of the charities and what the donation buys.

Indeed, I'm trying to pass myself off as one too.

But very very very unfortunately our street is doing a neighbourhood advent calendar thing, inspired I think by hipper trendier Saltaire, who really don't have to worry. I had to put my foot down very firmly which I don't often do, obviously to to say no way are we doing that. Only to find out a week or so later that not only are we taking part we're window number two, presumably selected to go early in order not to set too high a creative bar for the others. But my part was to basically stand back and do nowt.

Cut to another week later when getting hold of a bike box from the nearby shop, fitting sockets for amber bulbs, constructing shelves etc to copy a 3D scene we saw at Tilberthwaite, and generally assembling things not necessarily in my wife's preferred way with marriage imperilling creative discussions aplenty. I've no idea how you actual arty types negotiate these skill-stretching, time-consuming emotional rollercoasters, but I'm fully spent.

So advent calendars. Can bog off. (And if anyone recognises me on the basis of this post - I've basically identified our house - please don't post this on the whatsapp group or I'm really for it...)

I have a stock phrase for this situation:
"You can tell me to do something, or you can tell me how to do something, but you can't do both"

i.e. if you knew how to do it yourself, you should have bl**** done it yourself. Don't waste two peoples time micromanaging it if you could do it yourself or would only ever accept it done your way.

Ever considered a career as a marriage guidance councillor? I'm definitely going to say that. I'll report back on how it goes... 🙂

[p.s. it wasn't really an emotional rollercoaster. It's a cardboard bloody box all said and done 🙂 ]

I bought one last year as slightly discounted & although it was fun it's an expensive way to buy tools you might not even want or need!! Especially considering Wera are discounted all the time on Amazon now, you can just buy what you need when you need it!

Ah, I see you've driven with my partner in the passenger seat.

I got my wife a Jelly bean calendar because I'd treated myself to this nice Epoch Advent Calander to sit alongside Hans Gruber.

Fortnum and Mason's tea Advent calendar as per usual. Also Hotel Chocolat but we get them reduced as Son2 is working there until Christmas.

Bought my new wife the Liberty one. It’s very impressive and so it should be for the money, and I do fear I’ve made a lifelong rod for my own back as a result.

Bought a couple of the Brewdog beer advent calendars, one for my brother and one for a mate and her 15yr son, they were really chuffed and like the selection so far
