I don't mind a banner for a small, reputable business tbh. It's the pop ups and the ones that load an extra page between clicking on a topic and accessing it that I pay to avoid.
I just got an enormous mid-thread video try to load itself (and immediately be stuck buffering)
I've just hidden it like I did with the previous crc banner. I only want to see text or photos that people have posted.

Not always. Mostly I don't see them. Then sometimes I see them a lot. Then I see them if I refresh a page but not if I have gone straight from a link... all very odd. But I definitely disabled them in my settings.

Tbh the forum seems to have been running shit for a good few weeks now, what once was a bit of a gag is turning into a major turn off. It’s getting to the stage where knowing it’ll hang up for ages, no access at all, your replies will be lost etc equate to don’t bother, it’s tedious, and that’s with a subscription.

Iirc STW doesn’t choose what ads pop up, as its done via Google and Google will be looking at search history?
It is the only 'ad' that I see and only seems to be on the main forum page - so no real issues with it. However, I'm clearly thick, so a wee note like 'In partnership with...' or 'Sponsored by...' would help my slow thinking dull processing brain. Not a massive issue from me though (other than the prices, but I'm clearly not the intended market for the kit).
The idea that people are bothered that it's a small clothing company and not a large, industry-crushing bike company is madness to me. You don't want fancy trousers? Don't buy any.
In a period where the bike industry is really struggling I think some people seem to believe STW is immune from the pressures. If it doesn't earn money then it will disappear and we won't have a forum to moan on.

It's not too bad on a phone, but in the Chrome browser on a laptop it takes up a huge chunk of screen space and makes accessing the stuff we come here for just a little more tedious. I've just done a screenshot to show that, but it seems the photo upload facility is kaput. Just making it a little more subtle and not having it dominate the screen seems a reasonable thing to expect imo.

I would say that that is an example of what ads should be like, Simple banner, no animation, doesn't get in the way too much, and purposefully chosen and placed there by those that run the site.
It's the ads that trigger epilepsy and take over the entire browser to the point I can see or concentrate on the actual content that cheese me off.

As a non paid for member, I have to admit that I'm not tempted to pay thanks to the issues raised in threads like this.
The forum is ok on my phone, save for the horribly slow page load thanks to all the pop ups etc, and you can't see much on each page due to them (oh and that bloody annoying Google vignette full page takeover).
But I now avoid the site on my MacBook. Within 90 secs of browsing my laptop wants to take off it gets so hot trying to process the site. The only way I can calm it down is by turning the computer off. Only MS Teams gets it so hot, but at least when I come off there the computer calms down.
I'm sure the mods will tell me it's an issue with my laptop, but sadly stw is the only site that does this, and it's every time I visit 😔
It probably is your laptop if it isn't one of the new model Macs...I use one at work, the previous model went absolutely mental with the fan on this site (and only this site for web browsing - Photoshop also got the laptop almost levitating due to the amount of fan usage). I then got a newer model Mac and it remains absolutely silent on here.
No idea the difference as I'm not a Mac fanboy so as far as I'm concerned it is an over-priced version of a PC that does everything a windows machine can do - but in an alloy case.
I might run this as the new banner ad though. 
A tough one for STW in that reducing reliance on non-behavioural advertising is the right to do. For those of us who care about privacy and behavioural advertising (where acceptance of cookies on STW through very questionable consent pages allows for tracking across the web, and not just on STW), the move back to standard publisher use of ads is a good thing (showing ads that are deemed to be interesting to many readers but not reliant on personal data).
So, yes, the banners are ads, but they’re not reliant on shitty adtech, which means I’d be more likely to renew my sub’, even with ads. Of course, don’t forget the mag’ has ads too. Not a problem when handled properly because ads offset higher issue/subscription costs.

I checked I was logged in, then clicked the x...not a big deal really but still worthy of a moan - not for the advert but for making me have to check I was logged in.
I'm also logged in and now getting a Mountain Warehouse advert plastered over my screen - not happy.
If only there was an area of the forum where members could be informed of new members discounts.
