I’ve no understanding of what makes a good musician (for example the stuff that superficial and mboy talked about) but I do know what makes me hum and what doesn’t and I quite like her music. I also quite like Ed Sheeran. And I definitely like Alison Moyet.

At first I thought this might be because I’m a cringy dad, but on closer analysis I’ve been like that since my early 20s (a long time ago now!).

I also think Adele would probably be a good laugh to have a beer with.

I saw a woman walking down the street singing with a laptop under her arm. I think it was a Dell.

Underrated joke.

Her music isn't really my type of music but I can appreciate her talent and why she has many, many fans. Each to their own.

Went right off her when she cancelled an inter when the journo confessed to not listening to her album first.

That and her Spotify deal stopping users hitting random when playing her album.

Decent voice and a few good tunes but get over yourself.

Funnily enough, both of those made me respect her much, much more

For starters, the interviewer showed a staggering lack of professionalism, even if he hadn’t had a chance to listen to it, he should have been able to work around it if he was any good at his job.

As regards Spotify, as I never use it, or any streaming service, I didn’t know that shuffle or random play was the default! That’s just bloody stupid, artists spend significant amounts of time organising the order in which tracks should play, and there are many albums where tracks fade or segue into the next - that gets totally bollixed up it the album random plays when you listen to it. I usually listen to music on my phone in shuffle mode, but that’s when I’m at work, or in town. At home, I’ll more often choose an album and listen right through, and shuffle is an option, if required. As it should be.
And considering just how much vinyl is being sold now, and even cassette tapes, who could possibly think that just because the people buying the vinyl are also listening to the same music streamed, they’re going to want it in a random order?

It makes no sense, and Spotify have shown some sense.

Now, if the record companies would only pay artists the same royalties for streaming as they do for radio plays, more artists could actually earn a living, instead of the (literally) top 1%!

Work round the interview? He did the interview but she prevented the footage from being used.

As for shuffle. Shock horror most people will choose what tracks they listen not just play 40m of music exactly as dictated by the artist.

Which is always an option, but why should the default setting be shuffle?

And, 'shock horror', default shuffle won't mean that people can choose the order of the tracks. I think you are getting a bit muddled up.

I am interested as to why you get miffed about someone whose products you are not forced to buy. I don't like her either, (well rolling in the deep was OK) but some people do, it does not bother me, easy to avoid by not buying her mp3s. Yes it comes on the radio but there is loads of stuff on the radio I don't want to listen to. Can you explain why this makes you miffed? I am genuinely interested.

Isn't that the point, though? I think most serious artists consider an album to be a cohesive piece of work. It's like saying you quite like the portrait of Jesus in the last supper, but you don't care for the other people in that picture. Or eating deep fried fish without the chips, I suppose.

Listening to one song before being skipped to another artist's song as 'dictated' by the algorithm means you miss aspects of the completed work that the artist has curated. For 50+ years, the album has been how artists tell stories. That method is being inadvertently eroded by technology. Fair enough, times are changing and perhaps that's what people want. But perhaps we're just not paying attention and the computers are making decisions for us. Adele is defending the concept of the album, which I think is cool.

Yeah, much more like that. Or eating the chips but leaving the ones with skanky bits or too much grease. (ie. it really doesn't matter)

It isn't. It's a setting you can toggle.

Don't mind Adele. I'd rather my teen daughter listened to her and the likes of Taylor Swift who write you know, actually songs than most of the teenie chart stuff which just sounds like it written by committee and produced by AI. Perhaps she's popular because she can impart some emotion in her lyrics, voice and musicianship? You can hear imperfections in the records and it's not autotuned to death.

Not bothered by whether she's nice or not or her accent to be honest. I sometimes think if we were so obsessed with musicians looks and image in the 70's/80's whether bands like Queen or the Pogues would have ever have existed.

Oh.. and shuffle can get in the sea. It creates an echo chamber. Broaden your horizons. Let a record breathe. Some of the best music ever made is lesser known album tracks.

Spotify user here for at least 10 years and I've never had the default setting as shuffle??? Is this only something non paying users had?

It’s music to drink lukewarm lambrini to while crying and updating your Facebook status to single because Darren has left you again

Seems to be quite popular

I blame Darren

I've used it since seeing on here as an invite only thing. I pay for a family account - around £17 per month and until recently I had to deselect the auto shuffle. Trouble is, I would never remember until I was expecting the second song of an album to play and another song randomly started playing.

There's lots of music I don't like but luckily there's a lot I do like.

So, unfitgeezer - fess it up? What do you like - a bit of Floyd (smashin, nice ;-))?

Her music is screeching self obsessed awfulness to my ears but my wife likes her and I love my wife so I have taken the time to ask her why she likes it

Basically my wife works very hard and has pulled herself up from undemanding non university parents to MBA level and a significant salary (far higher than mine). She is very much a ‘woman’ and will wither anyone on the vine who says women should ape men - women have the skills to make their own destiny and apparently Adele speaks to her..
