Why not? What's wrong with her speaking voice? Or what she says?

Refreshing to hear someone so open, honest and unpretentious.

And I'm not into this sort of music normally, but bloody hell she's not playing games, eh?

Proper talent.

Nowt wrong with the voice or what she says.

It's HOW she says it. Just that accent from a female grates on me, I'd rather hear Scouse (& thats bad enough)

Some of her songs I could listen to all day. Just don't speak in between.

Ah right, you're hung up on where she's from. How open-minded of you.

Don't ever come to London then; you'll end up exploding with apoplexy....

I must apologise, I blame the Bacardi & Jura Superstition!

I used to go out with her. She was fat and talentless then, I see that she is even fatter and more talentless now. She was crap in bed too, always 'me, me, me.' I think it was because she is fat. Oh, and her voice grated on me too. She had a guaranteed record contract from the fame school, or 'factory' she went to and she never stopped bleating on about it. Some people have to actually work for their fame. Not my fat Adele, oh no. Sorry for the mini rant, but I think I am actually responsible for some of the shite songs on her last album. I broke her fat heart, she broke wind. A lot.

Prima Donna in the making - recently recovering from an operation on her throat, apparently now considering moving abroad as concerned about the effect pollution is having on her throat/voice - least of your worries love, the fags will be doing that for you! She famously quoted that she'd rather quit singing than smoking.

Hmmm...

A couple of issues here.

She had a guaranteed record contract from the fame school, or 'factory' she went to and she never stopped bleating on about it.

It was the BRIT School. She didn't have a contract from the school, but there was substantial industry support throughout her time there.

She was fat and talentless then, I see that she is even fatter and more talentless now.

Overweight? Yes, she never participated in PE there. Talentless? Nope, her voice was and is amazing. Does she know it? - of course, she was a pain in the arse and very self-assured all the time she was at the BRIT.

How do I know? I taught at the BRIT.

Not a big fan of her music - I find her voice has a harshness to it when she goes for top notes that grates on my ear.

As for her size, I don't see how that has a bearing on her musical abilities - I can think of plenty of female singers with big amazing voices, and big bodies to match.

I find it amazing that someone starts a thread about Adele, and up pops the boyfirend that broke her heart and one of her teachers from the Brit academy or whatever it is called. Small world. I only know 2 of her songs anyway, Mrs Griffin likes her though.

No, she's 22 and has a degree of style. The problem is that she isn't particularly skinny and is also much too successful to be 'STW niche'. She also don't talk in a northern way.

So, epic fail really. Poor girl, she must be gutted.

I think she's fabulous and amazingly talented. I don't generally feel the need to listen to someone talking if they are a singer as I just like to listen to them singing but whenever I've heard her speak she's just funny and honest.

She was fat and talentless then
Such anger - I'm guessing she must have dumped you no?

She'd probably think you're butt ugly too.

Intrigued by OP so put this on iplayer while working. Shame to say that, so far, I feel the OP has a point. Ok, not fair to comment on accent but fair cop with the drivel and the gratuitous swearing right from the off. Pity because the music is mellow and nice to work to.

i don't understand how anyone can "respect" somebody for singing? unless they battled back from throat cancer or had to suffer persecution in their native country and endure a treacherous and dangerous journey to enjoy freedom of expression without censure.

it really is ****tery of the highest order to trash her for being fat - on that basis, we'd also have to dump:

Aretha Franklin
Cass Elliot
Monserrat Caballé
Alison Moyet

and so on...

That's just the out and out chubbies I can think of off the top of my head, there are plenty of other incredibly gifted female vocalists who are on the big side - Joni Mitchell was no slip of a lass!

Joni Mitchell was most definitely a slip of a lass:

And is still several sizes smaller than Adele.

Not that I'm bothered by what size she is, I just prefer more uplifting music:

And if the lady is hot, so much the better.

what about a vocalist?

If she was just a singer, you could perhaps knock her for that- though a grear singing voice isn't just a gift, it's an instrument that needs practice and commitment to get the best of.

But, she also writes her own songs, so you can't just use the feeble "Oh, she was just born with a gift" line.

So that just leaves "She's a bit fat" as a criticism. And I'd be totally with you there, if she was a professional athlete or a stripper or a gym coach or something.

Every once in a while there will be an album that comes along that certain people buy, and by certain people i mean people who don't regularly buy music.

It happened when David Grays White Ladder came out, coffe table dinner party music. Nothing wrong with White Ladder but it soon became the music that was on in the background at every middle classed dinner party. Also see Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow, bonus useage for that Day Like This song now played at weddings for the first dance so the newlyweds can say "even though we appear boring, look, we like indie music"

Adele's albums are no different, safe music for safe people

lets get a couple of things straight:

Why is it that as soon as music becomes popular (which suggests it appeals to may ears) it's immediately dissed on STW?

I like JJ Goldman, Slade, Extrabreit, the Seekers, Fleetwood Mac - more mainstream you won't find. Should I be embarrassed or ashamed, or rejoice in liking things millions can sing along to.

Edit: but no I don't like Adele, not mainstream or happy enough.
