You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
There was a lovely comment on a thread earlier RE steep switchbacks, which I was mulling over while ragging it around the woods this evening. The phrase was 'heavy heels, light hands'.
Anyone else got any nice little phrases worth riding by?
'Look where you want to go'. About the best bit of advice I ever had, not just on a bike either.
"Chin up, look ahead" by Ed Oxley
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Loose as a goose!!!
Speed is your friend
Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the face.
pedal damn it
You can't get hurt in the air.
'jumping's easy. Landing, not so much'
Laser cock
yep, look at the gaps not the trees.
I find myself saying 'keep pedalling' lots to the kids. I guess that the same for everyone though.
Don't forget to breath.
head still, over the stem, stay low, avoid Louise
Go slow to go fast.
On any obstacle/section of trail that I think I could do myself a serious injury, instead of using a brave adage like Colin McRae's "when in doubt, go flat out", I much prefer to use the less brave approach of "when in doubt, miss it out". It may involve getting off and pushing, but its a lot less painful 🤣
Throw yourself at the ground and miss.
Don’t be sh*t
righty tighty lefty loosey
Never Rev a cold motor
😜
"Post bike questions in the bike forum"?
Throw yourself at the ground and miss.
Ah, hello Arthur.
Pull up, not out
Foot out, flat out
Less yappin, more brappin
F****n rev it!
Yeet yeet
Allez allez
Never Rev a cold motor
Is that a euphemism?
One up bum, no harm done.
As my mum used to say.
Hit the brakes, fly right by
"Practice makes permanent"
Practice does not make perfect: if you've learned it badly and you're practicing it badly, you'll only ever do it badly.
Don't shit it like a loose moose.
Bones mend, press send.
.....not that I have the balls anymore.
'heavy hands light feet' is the one I usually say before going otb.
Bones heal and chicks dig scars
Hold my beer
Asps, very dangerous, you go first
Faster, faster till the fear of death subsides.
Train in squares, fight in circles.
Out the saddle, heels down! I normally shout this at the kids when descending.
Think light, be light. When riding over wet roots.
Let the bike roll and it'll do the work. When you approach a trail obstacle and start to hesitate and pull the brakes.
Inside pedal up! Again shouted at the kids as they approach a berm.
Momentum is your friend. Much more sense than the usual speed is your friend IMO.
Just relax! Best used before a jump.
Spin to win! And cadence is king!
Up! Up! Up! Shouted at the kids to get out of the saddle when they're approaching a small climb on the trail so they maintain their momentum.
You can’t get hurt in the air.
Lolz this is my favourite
Stop fighting the bike- it's better than you !
let my ibis do the job
Watch it on tv.
"Aim for daylight" is the advice that always comes to my mind when I watch Friday Fails.
If you ain't fallin', you ain't haulin'.
Flat pedals win medals.
If you see a tree, turn.
"Don't brainlock". Possibly a better one than "Don't fsck up". May only really apply to skydiving though.
LASERCOCK!
I assume Laser Cock (although thoroughly entertaining in it's own right) is to do with pointing your hips where you want to go?
Paralysis by analysis.
Speed is your friend
This can actually be really unhelpful, especially with beginners/nervous riders. If they're nervous about an obstacle, being told to hit it faster isn't going to help, it's going to make them even more nervous.
As someone said, 'momentum is your friend' is better
As someone said, ‘momentum is your friend’ is better
I'd love to argue, but on a purely scientific basis you're saying exactly the same thing (execpt speed has only magnitude and momentum has a direction).
Except yours is less catchy, but does imply you can gain just as much skill eating cake as riding quicker, which I like the idea of. 🤣
Don't repeat your mistakes, there are no many new and painful ones to try
Slow in, slow out.
Easy gear, easy pedal
Brake cheap, brake twice
A piece of advice for life from the back of a box of matches:
Keep dry and away from children.
