Can anyone recommend any websites (or books), that offer advice on the best way to manage Google Ad-Words.

Have you tried googling for one?
Do a brain dump of all the keywords you want to be found on. Really dump, be imaginative. Then start to get the bid costs against them. Once you get started the keyword tool will help you tease out variations. You might find it better to concentrate on the cheaper phrases, eg 'budget lilac floral dress' not 'women's clothing'. I learned as I went and am a long way from expert, but then again some of the experts are too 🙂
Brad Geddes - Advanced Google Adwords. There is an awful lot to get your head around, but if you can do it - it works.
Employ someone else to do it as it's possibly the most tedious job in the world.

Are you selling several goods via ecommerce or trying to gain more visits to your website?
As keng38 says, it isn't enough just to get visitors - cash will sort that. Don't forget to spend just as much time working out how to make visitors do whatever it is you want them to. It's way too easy to focus on just qetting adwords to work
