Not intended to just be a negative list of mediocrity but.
I do not like Shirley Henderson as an actress. I think she has talent, i am sure she a perfectly nice human being.
I don't know whether its a type cast thing or her delivery. But she creeps me out. If something is good and she pops up I struggle to continue watching. I just get stuck reflecting how creepy I find her performance.
Tom Cruise tops my list. I didn't realised quite how much till the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
might i be the first to say James Corden?
Robert Pattinson - don't see the appeal. Just seems.. insipid.
Tom Hanks. He seems like a really nice person, he's not a terrible actor, but he's just mediocre. Whenever I see his name on a billboard, I know it's going to be some lame shit.
Robin Williams was mostly annoying and made some really shit movies.
Katie Sackoff is just irritating.
Tom Cruise tops my list.
In the right part, he's brilliant. He doesn't always choose good parts.
Maybe i should called the thread "good actors you struggle to watch"
I don't mind either of them personally, although i haven't seen a modern Tom Cruise film i may well be creeped out more these days.
The olympic thing was fully weird though.
Oh aye.
Stephen Graham.
Again don't think he's a bad actor but i am very over his "on the tipping point" delivery of everything.
Adolescence was spoilt by his presence.
I don't get Ricky Gervais. He doesn't seem to act, as much as play the same exact part in everything I've seen him in. He's even the same when he does stand-up.
Have you watched afterlife nbt?
Might change your mind a bit. Or not.
This is a broad church all opinions welcome
Kit Harrington. You might as well just get a plank of wood and paint a sour face on it.
Ricky Gervais worked for me in The Office and Extras but he's clearly not an actor. I tried Afterlife and gave up after about 10 minutes.
Pedro Pascal. The worst part of The Mandalorian was when he took his helmet off.
Hmm.
I dunno about Pedro.
Last of Us
Narcos
Mandolorian was pretty rubbish full stop so convinced he was the problem there 🤣
Easy - Tom Hanks. Just puts me off any film. Dunno what it is, just can't stand him.
Wahey, a thread I can really get into!
Sean Penn. At no point in a single Sean Penn film do you stop thinking "oh, it's Sean Penn. Doing his acting thing. Dear god when will he be off the screen again".
Kiera Knightley. I apologise as it sounds mean, but she just can't act. "Kiera, we'd like you to look determined. OK, slightly jutted jaw and showing your teeth, that'll do. Now we'd like you to act scared. OK, showing your teeth and slightly jutted jaw, good. Now can you show us alluring. Great, smile and teeth, lovely". Black Doves was not bad, but she was pretty terrible in it.
Tom Cruise I want to dislike, but honestly, in Top Gun Maverick, the last but one Mission Impossible etc, it's just impossible to do so. You know what you're getting and he just does it.
I don't get Ricky Gervais. He doesn't seem to act, as much as play the same exact part in everything I've seen him in
Theres two kinds of screen actor really- There are 'Transformative' actors who project a character, look, mannerism on screen other than then own - someone like Gary Oldman maybe, who'll transform his voice, shape, movements into someone or something else and make that created character seem real. And then there are 'personality' actors. Personality actors look and sound like themselves in everything they do - what they portray is the situation they are in. So Tommy Lee Jones pretty much always looks and sounds like Tommy Lee Jones - his skill is in making the circumstances around him seem real.
I suppose the thing to keep in mind with comedians - is thats an act. So Gervais's acting looks and sounds a lot like his standup becuase they're both performances. (Thats not a defence of his acting - I really quite like the Office and Extras but I think they'd both be better still if he wasn't in them. He writes good shows and put good casts together but the cast are all a lot better than he is and it seems odd that he's at the centre of their performances)
Anyway - the actor for me is David Tennant. And for me it's not his acting so much as his look - he often just seems over-crafted visually. I imagine him receiving a new script and flipping through the first few pages just to find out what his hair is going to look like
I think i will call time on this thread. Nicko74 absolutely nailed it with Sean Penn.
Adam Sandler.
As soon as you see a film described as "Comedy starring Adam Sandler..." you know it's going to be total shit.
Agree about the actors who look and sound the same no matter what they're doing.
Nicholas Lyndhurst. Can't bring myself to watch the new Frasier, simply because he's in it. I don't hate him but he's the absolute last actor I'd ever want to see in that show.
Lesley Manville. Just insufferable. She must remind me of someone.
Shia LaBeouf. Annoying.
Pretty much any actor who's been in EastEnders and then popped up elsewhere. Except Don Gilet. Thought he was quite good in Death in Paradise.
Theres two kinds of screen actor really
You're describing character actors versus stars. The elite can pull off both. George Clooney is a character actor trapped in a star's body.
Kate Dickie.
Ruined (for me) the otherwise excellent Dept Q on t’Netflix and pretty much everything else she’s ever been in.
Was just thinking that I don’t think there is any actor that I really can’t stand when
Kate Dickie.
The visual representation of nails down a chalkboard as soon as she’s on screen. Not because of how she looks, rather that I can’t understand how she’s had a single TV/movie acting role
Kate Dickie.
Ruined (for me) the otherwise excellent Dept Q on t’Netflix and pretty much everything else she’s ever been in.
Oh, interesting. I certainly didn't love her character, but I found it intriguing - like I couldn't get a handle on her motivations, whether she's a good guy, bad guy, etc. Which I conceded was probably good acting
Kate Dickie.
Ruined (for me) the otherwise excellent Dept Q on t’Netflix and pretty much everything else she’s ever been in.
This.
So much this
As a Scotsman, most on screen Scottish actors make me feel a bit weird, but she is truly abysmal. How she ever gets past an audition is beyond me. Every line delivered as though she's reading it for the first time ever from a teleprompter that's so far away she's struggling to read and process the words in her head.
Kate Dickie.
Ruined (for me) the otherwise excellent Dept Q on t’Netflix and pretty much everything else she’s ever been in.
Fun ily enough it was dept Q that triggered this thread.
I hadn't really twigged she was in it because Shirley was also in it.
Tom Hanks. He seems like a really nice person, he's not a terrible actor, but he's just mediocre. Whenever I see his name on a billboard, I know it's going to be some lame shit.
I was just going to say the same. He's the ultimate in beigeness. The film equivelent of listening to a Coldplay song on Radio 2
Struggling to think of many I dislike just for their acting, though there are plenty I'd classify as hugely overrated.
Except the blonde woman quiz master in those piss awful Gala bingo ads that sponsor The Chase. She's popped up in another couple of ads also playing an annoying cow. Of all the things to get typecast as....
+1 for David Tennant, not sure what it is about him just find him hugely annoying.
Harrison Ford, once you realise how many times he casts himself with much younger female partners it all begins to feel a bit yucky 🤮
Nicholas Cage
He's the opposite of Tom Hanks - never mediocre. When he gets it right, he's brilliant, When he gets it wrong, he's unwatchable. If I have to choose between a random Tom Hanks movie and a random Nic Cage movie, it'll be Nic Cage every time. Good chance it'll be awful, but it won't be forgettable.
https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2014/04/nicolas-cage-over-the-top
Jared Leto.
Ryan Reynolds.
Jim Carey.
Elliot Page.
Angelina Jolie.
Vince Vaughn.
There's way more, but that's all I can think of for now.
Most I will still watch whatever they're in, apart from Leto.
Hate is a strong word, there's plenty I don't really like...
Laurence Fox - on so many levels
But then sometimes hate seems appropriate. I spent an evening in The Groucho Club with him about 20 years ago. Was a **** then too.
keira knightley. don't know what it is about her but I find her presence in a film annoying. I think it might be the way she always seems to like biting her sleeves for some reason.
+1 for David Tennant, not sure what it is about him just find him hugely annoying.
I wasn't keen on David Tennant. Then I watched Inside Man. It's quite different from most of the other parts I've seen him in and changed my mind a bit.
Daniel Day-Lewis massively overrated actor.
Jim Carey. But that's far more to do with not liking the sort of film's that are likely to cast him.
My opinion is only valid for the first 20 minutes of films though, as I'm rarely awake for the rest.
Nicholas Lyndhurst. Can't bring myself to watch the new Frasier, simply because he's in it. I don't hate him but he's the absolute last actor I'd ever want to see in that show.
Kelsey Grammer would be pretty high up the list actually. Not funny and a weird false gravitas.

I'll see you Sean Penn and raise you Joaquin Phoenix. Just relentless over the top "look at me acting". It might be that he mainly play villains as he annoyed my far less in "Her". But i honestly felt like I needed a shower after "The Joker" he made my skin crawl. But maybe that was the point? In that case he is brilliant.
Coming late to this most have been said but luckily Steven Seagal is still unsaid. I have no idea what he's for. Should have changed his name to seagull to be more interesting.
Daniel Day-Lewis massively overrated actor.
One more...
Gal Gadot.
Yes she's easy on the eye, but there are plenty of other similarly attractive actresses that don't have the acting chops of a Chesterfield sideboard.
Daniel Day-Lewis massively overrated actor.
I watched Gangs of New York again the other day......how can you say that!?!
because he is the same in There Will be Blood as he is in Gangs.
because he is the same in There Will be Blood as he is in Gangs.
Good point, well made. He's exactly the same in both in one way it's impossible to ignore.....he's brilliant!
Adam Sandler.
As soon as you see a film described as "Comedy starring Adam Sandler..." you know it's going to be total shit.
The 'Half in the Bag' episode about Jack and Jill by Adam Sandler is quite entertaining - basically detailing at length how Sandler diverts millions of dollars of cinema ticket buyers money (and product placement kick backs) away from any production costs and directly into his and his friends pockets. It probably the only thing he manages to put any imagination into - figuring out how to taking as much money as possible for putting the least value on screen
You're describing character actors versus stars.
Not really. Just some acting is about a different kind of performance. There is also the 'Star' thing, where someone's brand or personality is something they bring to role, but thats not the same thing.
Nicholas Cage
He's the opposite of Tom Hanks - never mediocre. When he gets it right, he's brilliant, When he gets it wrong, he's unwatchable.
Having recently re-watched The Adaptation recently I'm actually beginning to wonder if theres actually two Nicholas Cages. But then would mean one of the Nicholas Cages would have still had to play both Kaufmans
Cillian Murphy. He needs to cheer up a bit. A lot, in fact.
Vince Vaughn ...creepy
Lee Evans ....stick to your bad, sweaty stage work.
Ed (effin) Sheeran ...stick at the other job.
Rachael Stirling ..dull and overrated.
Bill Nighy. Always the same. In a suit.
Coming late to this most have been said but luckily Steven Seagal is still unsaid. I have no idea what he's for. Should have changed his name to seagull to be more interesting.
Yeah but viewed as a comedy his films do raise quite a few giggles, so that's a positive.
Cillian Murphy. He needs to cheer up a bit. A lot, in fact.
And never attempt a Brummie accent again!
Off topic but James bond and mission impossible films.. And others...
Not so much the acting etc..
It's just the most generic, vanilla 'painting by numbers' formulaic bulls hit..
It's like the film equivalent of buying a coffee from McDonalds... Objectively there's nothing really wrong with it.
But it's just so boring and predictable.
because he is the same in There Will be Blood as he is in Gangs.
Given both characters are absolute sociopaths, then surely it's to be expected?
For me it's Vicky McClure. Something about her screen presence always makes it very clear I'm watching Vicky McClure acting rather than e.g. DC Kate Fleming tracking down bent coppers.
For balance I feel much the same about Gerard Butler.
Ed (effin) Sheeran ...stick at the other job, but if you could pack that in too, that would be awesome!
FTFY
might i be the first to say James Corden?
Statistics say there is no might about it. Speaking of which, those two almost merge together into one mega awful celebrity in my mind. Imagine it <shudders>.
Owen Wilson, went to the same stage school as Keira?
Ron Perlman.
No objections to his part in Alien 4, but I've struggled to watch him in anything else.
Had to stop watching Hand Of God series one, couldn't stand him. Maybe it was the character, maybe series in general.
I would join with the Nic Cage dislike, cos I hate overractors (Ah yes, thats who I forgot!*) - but there are films like Red Rock West, Kick Ass, Pig, where he is actually really good and watchable. But he does do a lot of shit.
*THE classic over-actor who I just cannot stand: Bryan Cranston. (I did make it through Breaking Bad, but only because it was Covid lockdown and I forced myself)
Tom Hardy

I think Cage is one of those actors that will do anything for a gig, but also has moments of true, true genius.
the actor for me is David Tennant. And for me it's not his acting so much as his look - he often just seems over-crafted visually. I imagine him receiving a new script and flipping through the first few pages just to find out what his hair is going to look like
Youll enjoy Litvinenko on ITVX then....
and yet in a world full of online hate, you’ve chosen to start a thread specifically to list people we don’t like, for no obvious reason than one particular award winning actor is so good at her job that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Not intended to just be a negative list of mediocrity but.
Ooops the opinion police are in.
no obvious reason than one particular award winning actor is so good at her job that it makes you feel uncomfortable.
Yes, thats exactly what i said. I actually specifically said that.
Which bit do you need a help with?
Nearly all the actors listed on here I can see why they are on the list, but also they have all been really good in a film I have really enjoyed. Even Adam Sandler (Grown Ups)
Except Ricky Gervais. Unless his specific skill is making my skin crawl and making everyone around him seem like Olivier at his peak.
Benedict Cumberbatch.
I sort of admire Nicholas Cage for just the decades of commitment to be as relentlessly as Nick Cage as he can be in every movie he's in - I guess at least directors and studios can't say they weren't aware, and for not trading off the Coppola name. Agree about Keira, very limited. I have a conspiracy theory that Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz are in fact the same person...Ever seen them in the same movie? No, no you haven't. FACT!
Also let's not forget Shia LeBeouf. How he still gets work will continue to be one of the unsolved mysteries of the universe.
Ron Perlman.
No objections to his part in Alien 4, but I've struggled to watch him in anything else.
Had to stop watching Hand Of God series one, couldn't stand him. Maybe it was the character, maybe series in general.
I thought he was really good in the original Hellboy. Also pretty good in Drive.
Eric Roberts is appalling, but I think he embraces the fact and makes a good living from being so bad.
Recent credits include "The Human Centipede 3".
Check out his filmography. Eric Roberts filmography - Wikipedia
Arnold Swarzenegger. Hubby enjoys 'shooty, shooty, bang bang' films a lot, so I've witnessed Arnie just playing himself in every role. He needs to stick to politics.
Meryl * * * * ing Streep
James Stewart. I love old films but I cannot abide films with him in them. Irrational I know. 😂
I wonder, do we need to separate the actor from the acting?
Tom Cruise, for example, is easy to dislike but he's done some excellent work in some excellent films. He does his own stunts whenever the studio will let him, and he's one of the vanishingly few actors who knows how to run properly.
As a person though, he's probably at least a 4/10 on the Paltrow Lunacy scale. Scientology, the dismissal of psychiatry, arranged marriages, (alleged) wiretapping...
Anyway.
Ricky Gervais. He was the worst thing about The Office, his stand-up involves him hiding behind "I don't believe any of it, it's just a joke" before going on rants about hilarious subjects like children with cancer, and I remember one time they shoved him on stage at some concert or other when there was a technical hitch between acts and he basically stood there going "erm..." for ten minutes, totally at sea.
Tom Cruise has stunt double that looks so much like him you'd have trouble telling them apart. My last atempt to watch a Cruise film ended xhen the laws of physics were so far beyond breaking point it was beyond video game - maybe that's why you can watch them Cougar - you spend lots of time in virtual realities. 😉
And the interviews have me hunting for the remote control in seconds.
