Any use? If so, is there a decent one that isn't a wristband, as I can't wear these at work?
I believe they are all wristbands now? Unless they are still making the Fitbit one.....or use ones phone depending on the bells and whistles it has.
Is using a phone app not going to knacker the battery really quickly?
Other question would be whether the band type still work e.g. on a belt?
iPhones track steps and stuff.
My sister has a Fitbit. It got knocked on to her bedroom floor as she was getting ready for work and in a rush she forgot to put it on for her day at work. It recorded 1000 steps that day! Maybe her house is haunted? Or maybe it's just not very accurate!

Can't speak for Android, but iPhones, from 5S onwards with varying levels of features, have a motion coprocessor which handle all the activity monitoring stuff with very little overhead. It's when you start tracking movement with the GPS chip that your battery commits hari-kari.
Basically, an iPhone monitors your activity anyway via integrated accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses and barometers (6S only). So the data is there whether you use it or not.
I had a Fitbit HR for xmas - frankly it's bobbings, a gimmick, an answer to a question that's doesn't need answering. I thought it was great for a few weeks, but it soon passes and judging by how many of my FB friends have become 'inactive' between Jan and now it seems I'm not alone.

Maybe it recorded her exercises during the night. 😉

No.
It would have been WAY more than 1000........
Twice.
😈
...and who said chivalry was dead.
Hammerite, I think you're allowed to hoof Mr Flashheart in the slats.
Twice.
Withings Pulse comes with a little clippy case that you can attach to your belt (or bra) as an alternative to the wrist strap. Or the FItbit Zip is a bit old now (but can be found cheap) and is designed to be clipped on.
Or Misfit. Wife has one as it is the most accurate for swimming. Can be a watch, pendant or zipper type thing. Doesn't rely on GPS either so all movement focused. Just sync it with phone/tablet every so often to get the data.
Could buy the Fenix 3 watch. The new one has the HRM on the back of the watch. Or the Forerunner® 235
I rather like my Charge HR. It is reasonably accurate and helps me focus on keeping my daily aims up. Going to upgrade to the new watch thing they now do for my birthday.
Drac/Flashy - she's been married 16 years, I doubt there's been much action for a while!
I love gadgets, I really do. But I don't need a watch to tell me I'm not doing enough, I eat crap, and really ought to do more. Isn't that what SWMBO does anyway?
How good is the built-in step tracker on an iPhone?
Pretty good and if you already have one it's already tracking you. Open the health app and see.
If you want something to be able to wear without looking like a dick try the new Garmin Vivo Active which will give you multi sport activities with built in heart rate and looks ok on a daily basis.
On Android I use Google fit. Integrates automatically with Strava, Garmin, etc

I've just got the new Garmin Vivoactve HR watch. Had it a week now. The activity tracking stuff is just very annoying. It has a little cheer when I've walked up so many flight's of stairs, tells me I need to get up and move when sat at work or driving, gives me lap times when cycling a linear route....? Not of interest to me.
What is good is the at wrist heart rate monitor and the GPS tracking bit so I don't need to kill my phone battery when on a ride. I can see basic stats and my HR while riding which is what I wanted.
I feel silly wearing it when I'm not on the bike, it looks like a £10 digital 'sports' watch I bought from decathlon 5 years ago.
They apparently do a belt clip for the Vivofit 3. Whether this is available in the UK...
My wife's phone is hopeless at monitoring her activity, but then it's not always in her jeans pocket which seems to be the issue.
I use my iPhone, doesn't seem to kill the battery but I am only using the step count/distance not hrm. I use endomondo for any "sports"

Obviously it depends on the phone. Newer iPhones/Android phones are pretty rock solid.
I really fancy a Fitbit blaze. Any major reason that I should avoid? Also, using Google shopping, there's a couple of shops that are flogging then for c£130 rather than the usual £155ish; are these things that may be counterfeited, or am I just being paranoid?
Link to the shop and we'll tell you. More a chance of there being an issue with the shop over the device. Such as being in HK or something.

I could follow you around and poke you with a stick if I think your being lazy
I also have a sleep function......ok mallet, but it does the same job
I have a Pebble Time, its pretty good and validates well against my iPhone. It does lots of other things as well though. I only paid 75 pounds for mine second hand. I like the option to see texts whilst riding without having to get my phone out. Its much more configurable than most activity trackers so you can decide what it does for you. Plus you can change the watch face any time you like.
Garmin vívofit 2 here. Not much good to the OP because it is a wristband.
It's a pretty basic model, just step count and sleep monitoring, no HR, GPS, text alerts or any of that. I got it free through work and I've been using it for about eight months now. I like it.
I have a very sedentary job sat in front of screen all day and its plaintive little chirrups remind me to get up and move a bit.
It automatically adjusts its daily target based on your performance which is good. I've started going for long walks at lunch time just to try and increase my step count. So that aspect works for me.
It syncs with Garmin Connect (via phone or supplied USB dongle) and from there it connects with MyFitnessPal, Apple Health etc
Most importantly it is light and comfy. I've never liked wearing watches but I barely noticed this band and it stays on my wrist 24/7 (probably helps that it is waterproof and doesn't need charging).

They do sell a belt clip...
As an aside, going out on the bike does very odd things to the iPhone step tracking.

Ooh cheers, didn't know that - missus might be interested because she wants one but like the OP she can't wear it at work.
+1 Garmin vívofit 2
I have had one for over a year and it is still on the original battery. Just enough features and it has replaced my watch.
It has made me more active and is pretty cheap nowadays -£59.99 from Currys - as an updated version is imminent.
A bit of a hijack here.
Considering getting an activity tracker. essentially I want heart rate and activity and sleep. happy with a wristband looking at fitbit charge hr and vivosmart hr - any views?
more importantly - i also like wearing an analogue watch on my left wrist, so will i look like a dick wearing one of the above on my right arm?
I have a Polar M400 which tracks activity, tells the time, has android notifications (which are rubbish) and will GPS track rides (I don't put the computer on the commute bike).
Got it relatively cheap (80€ IIRC). I wear it to work, but that might depend heavily on what you do for a living 😕
Google Fit on my Android phone doesn't seem to use much battery at all. It's not that accurate, but as a guide it's fine. It's free, so unless you want the heart monitor there's no need to spend on anything else
cheers, I do want the HR monitor.
I've been contemplating the Tom Toms on Sports Pursuit as a ride/run tracker, although apparently it takes a while to pick up signal.
