So I have an ongoing problem with an aching testicle, I have been to the doctor twice now and he seems to think it is a cyst on one of my balls, I've had a course of antibiotics and now a course of anti-inflammatories, but neither seems to have made a lot of difference, I have also been referred for an ultrasound scan which is at the beginning of next month.
What the doctor has been less clear about is what happens after the ultrasound scan, presumably because it 's dependant on what they find, so I'm just wondering if anyone on here has ever suffered a similar problem? It's really starting to get me down as I've been told to avoid any activity that aggravates it, which at the moment is almost everything, cycling, running, weight training even some stretching. Also could this be related to cycling? I really don't want to be facing a future without being able to ride my bikes😭
Sorry to hear that. The important thing is that you are getting a scan quite quickly, which should provide the answer and therefore the appropriate treatment.
Not much you can do before then but try and not to worry unnecessarily in the meantime which is easier said than done.
The one time I had this - genuinely, almost 30 years ago - I realised it was becuase I'd put weight on and my underpants were too small. Bigger pants cured it.
I've since had scans for something that turned out to be an epidydimal cyst, but they decided not to treat that as it wasn't actually painful, I was just concerned about the lump and as they're not dangerous, no treatment was needed
Cysts can be removed / drained but the usual thinking seems to be to leave them unless particularly troublesome (and they may well come back). If this was your GP then once you have ultrasound either they will refer you to Urology or you should push in that direction. I think it’s worth reminding GPs that “this is affecting my cycling, which is my main form of exercise and I’m worried if will have a long term impact on both physical and mental heath if I just “wait and see””. My feeling is some GPs think “well it’s not cancer, and that’s what you were worried about” and others are focussed on treating todays problem rather than thinking about the whole impact of what to them is a trivial cyst.
I had an aching testicle when I put my lower back out, very uncomfortable. Not saying it's that, but it's a possibility. I didn't associate the two for some time
I’ve been through similar recently, aching down the left hand side, tender ball, permanently needing the loo.
So far, I’ve had physical exam from a urologist, who then ordered ultrasound of the testicles, full abdominal CT, and finally a cystoscopy. And all he can find is a slight narrowing of the urethra at the exit of the bladder. Working theory is I had an infection and a small stone that passed by the time all the tests were done. He also suggested that I might have done something to my back, as a lot of the nerves are connected and you get referred pain in the testicles from a back injury.
Still, at least I know there’s nothing serious anywhere.
Thanks for all of your replies, it does seem that these are more common than I had realised, I'm not shy in talking about any health problem and a short survey at work found that a couple of my colleagues had also had similar cysts diagnosed in the past but they all fell into the no pain just a lump that concerned them category, mine feels like I have a small child swinging off of my bollock!

Was going to mention this, I have all sorts of muscular issues down my right hand side just due to imbalances and poor muscle function (too much sitting!).
It can sometimes manifest as pain in the right bollock as the nerve to that area passes through a lot of the hip musculature, so if things are tight or spasming they can compress the nerve.
Depending on which one it is it sounds like it could be a... right ball ache...
#sorry
I've been through the same process. Same pre-assessment "could be" list , awkward time with the ultrasound and a nurse - asking her if she just scanned testicles or other body parts as well. My small talk was never that good. The specialist I think gave me antibiotics and also told me not to cycle (I may have ignored this part - but certain saddles did impact it more). Also told me to wee less often by changing when I drink (guzzle a pint every few hours rather than sipping constantly - water that is).
For the most part things settled but occasionally comes back.

Isn’t this the set-up for a joke? Which side do you dress?
had a cyst removed 16 yrs or so, it grew back gradually, and was removed again a few months back, this time with some stitches to stop it reforming. They only tend to remove them when they are at a size that is troublesome, think almost 3rd ball size...
PM me if you want any details...
I had an epidiymal cyst age about 7 or 8. Only noticed when I saw one of my.balls was twice the size of the other. The doc gave me some pills and I thought it went away but I think it just shrank. Gradually grew I er the next 40 years, first noticed it about pea sized, it's now about the size of a crunchy coated peanut and started to ache a bit. I might ask them to whip it out and do a snip at the same time.
started to ache a bit. I might ask them to whip it out and do a snip at the same time
that's what I did first time round and it was good for probs 12 yrs or so then started to reform and ache again, though this more recent surgery has been done differently so less able to grow back
I had intermittent heinous left testicle pain amongst the sciatica etc. all due to a disc herniation.
As the disc healed the various pains ceased but I’m still recovering from nerve damage 3 years in..
Any movement could fire it up. sound familiar?
Maybe you need a good osteopath in addition to the tests you’ve had. Are you near Brighton?
familar, I have some cysts and aching left ball. It hurts to poke it and if I jump on the saddle wrong it can make me feel sick
GP doesn't seem remotely fussed. Told to get on with life.
If it gets any worse I'll ask a third time and then look to go private and have it removed.
I also have hip and back pain, so maybe its also linked, but I definitely have cysts, you can feel them and it was confirmed via ultrasound
I've had cyst removed under GA, they did the snip at the same time so at least I didn't get to smell my burning flesh.
If there is a lump and it's a cyst then you can shine a torch through it, a glowing ball is not something I ever thought I'd witness
Quite remarkable how common this is, I knew I'd be able to rely on this place 😃, perhaps we don't talk about these sort of things enough.
Anyway, no new back aches or recent pains in this area, nothing that hasn't been a niggle for the last thirty years. It came on quite suddenly the day after a turbo session, and I have had something similar twice before, once about 25 years a go and again about 7 years a go, both times treated and resolved very quickly with antibiotics.
@mudfish yes, I am very close to Brighton, but I'm going to wait on the results of the ultrasound scan before exploring other options, but always happy to have recommendations for various practioners.

We don't. And thank you for posting this thread as it has prompted me to post about my issue too. And once again STW helps you to realise you are not the only one to have experienced something we are often too embarrassed to even talk to our nearest and dearest about.
I have a spermatocele near my left gentlemans vegetable that causes an ache and discomfort at times. Took me ages to find it. Slippery bugger was rolling around in there with all the other junk.
I've had the same for years and have put it down to loads of things. Had a prostate exam, check for hernia, ultrasound, testicle examination, etc. Mine is sometimes matched to muscular pain (as mentioned above) down my left side and my best guess is my body is out of alignment, probably after too many years playing Rugby with the possibility of some kind of hip damage that I'll need to get looked at at some point.
I've found plenty of hamstring, groin and glute stretches can help as well as adductor exercises as they're all areas I get pain. Not found an effective knacker stretch/exercise yet though!
Mine hurt to a degree 24/7. PVPS (post vasectomy pain). Had it since the snip 12 years ago. Getting cold down there isn't fun.
Enjoyed their Peel session, often wondered what happened to them.
Gary and the Gonads or possibly The Bollock Brothers?
Cysts are almost universal they appear so commonly on scan. Unless pretty big, ie satsuma plus nobody gets too excited.
Varicocele is a potential cause of testicular ache, more commonly on the left.
Assume they are not concerned about epidiymo-orchitis if no response to antibiotics.
Unless pretty big, ie satsuma plus
Fffuuu....
This doesn't sound relevant, as the pain I am about to describe was intermittent, but years ago I suffered from pain 'down there' that would become so severe I ended up carrying paracetemol with me everywhere, and would need to sit and take some rest at the least opportune times.
It took over a year to diagnose, but it turned out that I had epididymitis and ended up on a two-week course of ciprofloxacin, with a week's follow-up course a month later, to get rid of it.
Walking would trigger the pain, as would riding my bike, standing for too long... basically, any movement.
It's worth being aware of for anyone checking out this thread due to pain in that area, as it seemed to be an elusive diagnosis.
i had epididimitus too in the past had my pee checked again last month. GP says all clear, but it still hurts 🙁
