Never had a problem with them until Christmas, cycling 60/70 miles a week then suddenly overnight my knees ache every day.
They don't hurt just ache?
Anyone had similar?
Cheers.
cold getting in perhaps, just a wild guess. Are you keeping them warm?
Has anything changed position wise on your bike, saddle height, cleat/foot position or something?
Or it could just be a bit of over use. And they need a little rest and recovery.

That was exactly my first thought. Knees are very exposed when cycling and the only time I have had significant problems with them was in cold weather and was resolved by wearing knee warmers.
+1 for getting cold & older?
Still remember cycling in shorts one November & then cinema that evening, oh my lord, made sure that never happened again.
They've been covered up! They ache all the time, day and night.
At my wit's end with them.
Well if they have been aching day and night since Christmas a doctor's appointment would sound appropriate. If you can get one.
I had some knee troubles a few years back so went to the work physio. Turned out to be my left ankle that was the problem. I was rolling in (over pronating) my ankle which was over loading inside of my knee. She gave me some insoles to put in my shoes and some some ankle exercises to strengthen them, worked a treat.
Pain at rest (ie overnight, when they are resting for the longest), resolves with movement, no comfortable position, often wakes you up after being asleep for the same length of time (and also often accompanied by early morning stiffness) = inflammatory pain. You are doing something to irritate a structure in your knees, most likely overloading ie they are not currently strong enough to cope with the task you are asking them to do (I'm guessing this is the cycling. Some resistance training and proprioception work for you!
If it's inflamation it could also be arthritis, which might be stress or diet related.
There are lots of different reasons for knee pain.. and lots of types of knee pain so a bit more detail.
The lifestyle effect that gave knee issues was landing on the ground ice climbing haha... and reducing carbs won't fix that
Definitely worth seeing a physio. I’ve had various knee issues in the past and physio/podiatrist visits always worked for me.
Yoga and or Pilates is your way out if this (iME)
If I keep up either my aches and pains seem to disappear.
My knee pain is (apparently) linked to a separated shoulder 6 years ago which has pulled my body out of alignment.
Internet experts are unlikely to be able to diagnose. Go see someone if it's problematic.
Could be all sorts but some things that helped me when riding more as well as foot position saddle height, position, core strength etc. were:
Shorter cranks - my legs are relatively short and 175 mm cranks too long. 170 mm made a big difference to knee pain.
Not having saddle nose down. Flat or some saddles have a slight dish is a start point. With saddle nose down you are constantly pushing yourself back on, small and almost unnoticed amounts, but enough.
Insoles - ones that support your instep. My knees used to rock in towards the top tube when pedaling. A slight outward can't helped mine go straighter up and down. Ergon pedals, superfeet or Specialized BG insoles could be worth a go.
Also I find that flat pedals are also kinder on knees so could be worth usitfor a while to let them recover if you aren't already.

Suggests it's likely not connected to cycling.
Last night the pain spread to my shins for some reason? Really painful.

I’ve been having a total mare with my leg the last few months, a weeks total rest,(bed bound) and lashings of deep heat,a foam roller and wearing compression leggings at night seems to have sorted it for me.(as not being able to walk is grim, couldn’t even sit in a car)
My fatal mistake was not resting and carrying on.

Might suggest you're body is compensating in some way to try and minimise knee Pain by perhaps adjusting your walking stride? Definitely go see GP, don't leave without a physio referral...
Had some kneehabilitation physio after an ACL reconstruction. Key thing for the strange pain in the shins (upper end, inner not outer) was doing lots of calf raises (stratight and bent knee, bent knee isolates the soleus calf muscle). Might be worth a try to see if that helps.
Does it resolve with ibuprofen? If so, this can be an indicator of inflammatory pain. See a doctor. You didn't state your age. But osteoarthritis is a possibility and knees are a common joint. It won't be cycling. Not on 60 miles a week of non-load-bearing exercise.
For me it was combined worn shoes & pedals, once I'd replaced both, my knees were much happier.
You didn’t state your age.
Indeed....possibly a major factor! I've had an awful problem with my knee, having a minor twinge when turning in the kitchen and then going for an 20 mile mtb ride with no issues. Went to bed feeling fine and woke up to find I was in so much agony, I couldn't walk. Turned out it was something called Chondocalcinosis....or Pseudogout! F...king hell its agony! (I'm 60)
7months on, it been drained, injected with steroids, but it hurts, it aches at night, it makes other parts of my leg ache and its really pissing me off! No cure or treatment appaz! 🙁
Strengthening tibialis and gaining tendon strength is an absolute gamechanger for knee health
There’s a guy called Ben Patrick who runs a program called ATG. I’d recommend spending just 1 minute looking into that on Google, it has changed peoples lives and while his program is expensive (but worth it IMO) he gives all the basic pain prevention and knee strengthening program away for free and in his book. Might not be for you but the amount of success he’s had and the fact the workouts are so laughably easy make it worth a go
The guy has multiple knee surgeries and was told at 19 he couldn’t play basketball again. He’s now 32 and doing sissy squats with his back to the ground, its crazy stuff and all he’s doing is training with his knees over his toes, using full range of motion and working on muscles we don’t normally train
