Right, been a while since I been on a bike, life taken over and I'm officially coming out of a really dark space.

The last 12 months the mental health of two of my girls has been in my face and affected my mental health. Currently have a 12 year old step daughter who is going through CAHMS hell, off the rails and disinterested in life and a 23 year old daughter who's been showing all the signs of ADHD and is all but homeless, bankrupt and doesn't see any point in carrying on. Has NO support from her side of the family and I'm trying to keep her going from 180 miles away. I'm now representing her in an employment tribunal for disability discrimination and seeing her through a modern day slavery criminal case for good measure, it's been a tough 12 months.

Meanwhile, I've piled weight on, 1 point away from being Type 2 diabetic and weighing in at just short of 22 stone.

So, I've decided to get my shit together and get back on it. Typical me, can't do anything with a modicum of balance, it's balls out or nothing.

I fancy giving myself a real challenge of riding the Route 66 on Conqueror Challenges and completing it before my 50th Birthday in May 2024.

This means a min of 14.5km a day on either a wattbike, walking the dog (which i do 4k most days anyways) or skating, as I roller skate quite a bit too.

So, someone convince me I'm having a brain fart and need to scale this back, or, tell me I have every reason for my own health to do this as well as raising money for Young Minds, to help other kids in mental health hell.

Discuss. I really value the STW community, notwithstanding the usual references to brother in law and Lings cars....

sounds perfectly viable mate... 14.5km on a wattbike is pretty easy even at that weight/fitness, it'll just get faster 🙂

Just do it. Sitting around thinking about it won't help anyone. Anything is achievable if you put your mind to it. You don't have to even do 14.5km a day from the start. Start with less that half that, in a few months time you'll easily be able to do way more than that.

Best of luck 🙂

(I need to do something similar having barely exercised for a couple of years)

9 miles a day then - sounds easier when it's single digits. 63 miles gets you 6 days off and time to recover. Even bagging a couple of 27/36 mile rides gives you a bit of breathing space so it becomes less onerous having to do it every single day. Obviously you'll have to work up to that but a flat-ish 18 miler would be a good start.

Not just achievable but realistic.   It willbe tough at first but will get easier.  I might split it up and the first couple of weeks aim a wee bit lower

Presumably you have 259 days until your birthday, when you want to have completed the 2300 miles?

9 miles a day is perfectly achievable, maybe an hour on the static bike every day, but what happens on those days when you're ill, hungover, Xmas day, on holiday, have simply not got the time to fit an hour in because you're charging around as Dadtaxi? Suddenly you're looking at a few missed days and you're 20 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles behind schedule. And when you realise that an hour plus on a static bike every day is a sure-fire way to destroy your sanity? 😀

As said above, just do it, what's the worst etc, but what happens mentally if you find yourself falling behind? Are you strong enough to allow yourself to fail? (Of course, you could do more than 9 miles day to get ahead...) This is meant to sound realistic, not negative. I absolutely love riding my bike, and do several times a week, but find that when I'm forced to do things I have a very different view, even if it's me that's doing the forcing! 😀

Very doable.
I'll run 3000 miles this year, so if a former fat lad like me can do that then I reckon you'll be fine.

My 4 year old rode 11 miles yesterday without any fuss, so you can physically hack the distance.

Would think that carving out the time to do it would be more of the problem. If you can do some commuting by bike then that should pretty much take care of things.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll manage fine if you keep that attitude up.

Meanwhile, I’ve piled weight on, 1 point away from being Type 2 diabetic and weighing in at just short of 22 stone.

Have you been offered any support with lifestyle changes? You'd be a great candidate for a community public health programme.

Good luck to you mate.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes following COVID, not helped by sleepless nights with a daughter who is T1 diabetic (lack of sleep raises cortisol levels, as does stress, which drives blood glucose levels up!)

Best thing i ever did was buy a decent turbo trainer, it means instead of just riding outside twice a week, I am on turbo or proper riding 6 days a week, and have lost 2 stone, and T2 is in remission and controlled solely with diet and exercise.

I have just clocked over 4000 miles this year to date, 2/3rds of that on the turbo, so it is do-able, but make sure your set up is good and you are in a comfortable position, as long hours on turbo is harder on the body (and the ar*e) than proper riding as you're stuck in one position.

I would add that long hours in Zone 1/2 on turbo aren't the best thing for controlling blood glucose, chuck in some more strenuous harder pedalling to burn excess glucose from bloodstream, or even better, the best thing is resistance training as an increase in muscle mass reduces blood glucose levels (slight over simplification)

Lots of evidence to show that losing 10% of bodyweight and reducing fat around the middle greatly helps BG levels to.

Anything i can do to help PM me mate

3 days weights.
3 days zone 2
1 day incorporate some zone 5 (ie Zwift Race).
Can also swim, walk, jog.

Good on you for a really positive step. Start with a step forward and build up.

The couch to 5k app reminded me that you do need to start really small and build up. Perhaps start with a 15 min ride daily for a fortnight, then up to 30 mins, then start looking at distances? I could help with the start and habit forming.

And you have my concern for your family's challenges - sounds like you're a great parent doing the best you can. See you in the trail one day.

Also make sure you give yourself a rest day each week, allow the body to recover and something to look forward to, even if it adds an extra mile to the other 6 days.

Well done on a positive step. The numbers you are talking about are easily achievable, especially on an indoor bike or out in the road

Sounds achievable to me.
i used to be 23 stone, and I’m now under 19, still going.
it wasn’t easy, but I’m really pleased i made the efforts
Do it.
some days may be harder than others, but just keep going the next day and you’ll smash it.

Great thread.  The only thing to watch is overdoing it so pace yourself and post often

I have nothing to add to the above advice other than:

1) Don't go mad too quickly or you'll be adding a coronary to your list of woes and,

2) I hope you feel better soon, that's a bag of arse you've been dealing with.

I hate to think how many of Netflix's cheesy action films I have got through. I tend to use Wahoo SYSTM for training, so if is easy Zone 2 day I have workout on phone and watch some cheese film or TV series (really liking For All on Mankind on Apple TV) on tablet, or other way and have workout on tablet and a music playlist on phone for bigger efforts.

oh, and make sure you get a BFF - big ****in fan... the bigger the man, the bigger the fan.. needed

You can do this, you will need rest days and some days will feel like you've gone backwards. Every day that you do something is a victory though, and the nine miles per day will become easier as you go on.

As above, roughly that distance per day is something that you'll hopefully be able to build into your routine so that anything you do doesn't seem like a massive undertaking each time. I think with these things it's about removing as many perceived barriers as possible. For example, for 9 miles or so you can take it fairly gently to just keep things ticking over, therefore you don't really need to get changed into cycle kit, so that's one less thing you need to think about and one less hurdle that may make you think oh I can't be arsed to do that or none of my kit's clean. Then just sit and spin whilst watching some crap on TV rather than just sitting on the sofa. Do you have a commute that you could build something into?

I think it’s a reasonable target

If you’re still asking 4k a day you’ll have some fitness. But I’d still write a plan so you don’t over do it.

Do you might do 5 miles at day low effort for a week with a rest day. 6 miles a day the week after all low effort. Add longer days, higher pace, ace emergency weeks off into a plan. Just make are ur ads up to the correct distance

I always liked zwift and a smart trainer for indoors riding as there’s stuff to look at and you can join the events and ride with other virtual peeps and it’s recording all your progress.

It’s got great benefits as you can get off anywhere on a ride and you don’t have to ride home if you’ve had enough and you can wear as little as you want and you can always squeeze a ride in regardless of the weather/available light and you can split the ride during the day and it’s simple you don’t have to overthink it just sit on and spin the pedals.
